Yeah, but it's now 8 REALLY good games out of 10. NY was a shit sandwich, but I don't even fault our D for Boston's 61%. They were just unconscious. Ray Allen shot 81%. If he missed ONE MORE SHOT, we win.

thank you.

this team can be a very good defensive team if they focus for the full 48, but just too many inconsistent stretches and mental lapses to consider them elite.

I'm going to withhold any excitement about this team's defense until they can get it done consistently against quality offensive teams who aren't playing on the 2nd night of a back-to-back. Not saying that they can't do it -- would just like to see it actually happen.

And somehow we were STILL able to get them ALL to shoot worse than their average.

Nothing to get overly excited about, but a step in the right direction.

Can't sleep on it. We were a couple of Gary Neal 3's away from dropping our last one against them in Dallas. You just can't relax.
I'm hoping Hill wakes up now that we're playing back at home.

We play good defense against poor to mediocre teams, but shitty against better teams. That tells me our defense isn't that spotty, it's just weak. Stronger opponents do well against us, but weaker ones do not. Nothing magic about that.

27-0 when our FG% is higher than opponents. Which means that most of our games we outshoot the enemy and hold them to a sub-par shooting effort. Nice recipe.

DMC

They are 33 - 0 when they outscore the opponents. That's the only thing they need to know as far as stats. They cannot go out and intentionally hold a team to certain shooting percentages. If they had that switch, it would be on all the time. This team is motivated by the in-game situation, not by the stat lines.

True but the Spurs have put up great defensive games against teams like the Lakers and the Thunder as well. Holding LA to 82 points and OKC to 74....

I think the last 4 opponents might be literally the lowest ranked offenses in the entire NBA.. so i wouldnt put too much of it on the Spurs defense although you have to give some credit to the team for keeping the opposition below their averages.

Anyway.. with the personnel the Spurs choose to put out on the floor... it is very difficult/almost impossible to be anything more than a decent defensive team. They will obviously have a couple of fluke nights where they defend a little better than normal and the opposition just flat out sucks.. such as against the Lakers.

Milwaukee is last, Indiana at #21 and Minnesota at #8 in team PPG. They all shoot a fairly low percentage though.

We played good defense against Lakers, Oklahoma City(Twice) and New Orleans(Twice), Portland and Utah. These are the teams which we're going to meet in play-offs. Which strong teams are you talking about?

Over the last 10 games the Spurs Opp FG % has been 41.7%--best in the NBA. This includes the Knicks and Celtics. During that strectch they have given up the 4th lowest total of points per game over that stretch. Some of the posters on this board crack me up. Earlier in the season they were complaining that the Spurs defense needed to improve. Not that it is showing definite signs of improving they dismiss it because the other teams were poor competition. :bang

They're going to struggle against certain teams defensively, mainly ones that can stretch the floor (Spurs don't have great length and athleticism). They've struggled against some of the better teams in part because of that problem.

NY game was a debacle, but Boston hit A LOT of long 2s - the shot that the Spurs defense is perfectly happy allowing (at least to anybody not named Dirk).

You're going to have some games where the opposition just gets hot from 18 feet and there's only so much you can do (although the team still almost won that game on the road). The belief - right or wrong - is that the odds of anyone staying hot from that range for 4 times in 7 games is slimmer than it would be from other locales on the floor.

Thanks for mentioning this, as this league is all about matchups. Tough matchups are the Knicks and the Magic. The Celtics not so much, they just execute perfectly on the offensive end, but the Spurs still could have won the game on the second night of a back to back.

Do you mean the Lakers? Well, I am looking forward to their next 10 games which includes opponents like OKC, Utah, Boston, Denver, Dallas, Houston, LAC and of course the Spurs. Most of the games are home games, but still this stretch of games will show if their current run is for real ...
