View Full Version : Why are the Spurs Everyone's Least favorite Team?

Someone mentioned that writer from Florida who wanted anyone but the Spurs to represent the West. I see and hear that same perspective from other sportscasters, on talk shows, and some even say the NBA hierarchy feels the same way. The Sports Reporters Sunday talk show started off with that same slant.
So, my question: Is it because of the Spurs small market? Is it because we have many players who are foreign born? Is it jealousy? Dan Patrick mentioned this on Friday when he asked the question "Are the Spurs not being given any credit for how good they are?
We are not a "new team on the block," so to speak. We've won this thing before. Are we a "dull team," as others see us? Our Spurs are as exciting as any other team, in my biased, "homer" humble opinion.

I still think it's the "dull" factor, being that others don't see us as a flamboyant, sexy team like the Lakers and Bulls. We also aren't known to run and gun and make the game exciting like other teams, which is wrong because we can run too. People see us as a boring defensive team with a "dull" superstar in Tim Duncan. Too, the small market thing, I believe also plays a factor in the non respect aspect. Just because we aren't a "Big City" like New York, LA, and others I think draws these writers and analyst against us. This really pisses me off!!! But hey, I read stuff earlier in the season about how Detroit wasn't getting any respect either as the defending champs, so we're not alone. I just look at as hey, lets piss these bitches off and give em what they don't want: a Spurs vs. Pistons finals (two real defensive minded teams, which can make for some ugly games). Ha Ha bitches!! Man I hope Detroit beats Miami so that I don't have to hear all the hoopla about Shaq this and Shaq that. That'll serve them right!!

Think about all the old great teams. People always hate whose at the top, because it's usually their team that's getting beat by said team.

You're inadvertently falling in the same trap that those idiot writers/broadcasters. Because you are making the point that running=attractive. Defense can be just as attractive - in many ways even more so - but does require a minimum of basketball knowledge on the part of the viewer. The fact that so many fans make that mistake is normal, but for professional sport journalist it's a sign of incompetence and lazyness.

I'm not saying they're right. I'm saying that's what most of them and other people probably think. Defense is attractive and it's part of the basic fundamentals of basketball and I wish more of these idots would realize that and get off the damn offensive hot doggin super dunking shit!

Until this year, they were dull. The way they played does not make the casual fan want to watch.
They want Showtime.

Who cares?
Seriously. The Spurs have always been outsiders in this league. Man, I hope I hear about how the "boring" Spurs are closing in on yet another NBA Finals appearance for years to come.
If you seek adulation, then jerk off to all of the comparisons of the Spurs to the Pats.

The people who don't understand basketball, and wanna watch a Jordan or a Shaq are bandwagoneers anyway. They don't give a crap about basketball, they wanna see Jordan fly or Shaq dunk.
The question should be...are these type of fly-by-night fans good for basketball?
I'm sure Stern loves them. Mebbe he'll make sure the NBA attacts more of these basketball morons...lower the basket a foot for more dunks, anyone who fouls gets to be beat up by fans for 3 minutes, reduce the shot clock to 7.5 seconds, dunks worth 5 points.
Hell, now that I think about it...that might be fun.

It's all jealousy...Spurs are the winningest team of all major sports over the last 7 years.

There ALOT more fun to watch this year than other years.
With disregards to locations, the spurs are a great team to see in the playoffs.

We are hypocrites. When SA was a run and gun team, we all said that the Pistons were boring and did not play real bball with those ugly it up championships in late 80s and early 90's.
The last few yrs since Pop took over, the Spurs have been the ugly it up defense first type of team, and we all had to defend that style of play to everyone who said that the Spurs were bad for the NBA and basketball in general. Nobody watched our championships(lowest ratings in years) because the detractors were like we Spurs fans were in the 80's and early 90's, we liked offensive bball, and hated the defense, walk it up the floor offense that Detroit played.
Now that we are able to run again, we have to defend the Spurs' against all the same critics. After watching TP and Manu run up and down the court in the Finals, while we blowout Detroit or Miami, the Spurs will gain some new fans and we will lose this unfair rap that has been hung on them since the Pop era.

I hear you Jim
Fans everywhere like to think there differnent in that regards. They like to laugh at what other fans say on there message boards.
Turn the tables though and the majority of said fans are just swapping positions EXACTLY with these other teams.
Now the sad question is which one of you here is S.A.'s version of LakerLanny or LakerGod?

Why are the Spurs Everyone's Least favorite Team?
Because they don't know real basketball.
Spurs are the best In the west! If you don't believe me, ask Eva. She seems to like the Spurs quite a bit this Season. :lol

I don't think defense is unattractive, I think slow games where the ball is brought up as slowly as possible and you see little soring is unattractive. The Spurs have been playing some of the best basketball I've ever seen this series, and they are doing it with both. If they could pick up the pace and still make the defensive stops (which is what they've been doing to the Suns), they are probably the most exciting team to watch. But if they play Detroit, they will fall back into that slow paced style where we see about 20 pts per quarter. A beautiful jump shot is just as exciting as a dunk, imo.

If the Spurs play Detroit the Spurs will try to push the ball whenever they can. They are a better tranisiton team and they'll get points easier if they don't have to go against Detroit's set defense. That said the Pistons will do everything they can to limit the Spurs tranisiton game and keep the pace slow.

Cuz we are not thugz
I think the people who still complain about the Spurs being boring haven't watched them lately. Manu and at times Tony have impressed a lot of people lately with their fearlessness. I think more and more people are going to want to watch the Spurs just to see what Manu will do next.
