View Full Version : How much are you supposed to tip barbers?

I usually just shave my head, but I has gone about 3 weeks without shaving, so it was too long.

I tipped two dollars for them to cut all of my hair(it was 10 bucks). Is that average?

That's about right...tbh...20% of $10 is about right...

10 dollars seemed steep, though. It's not like he did anything fancy to my hair. He just cut it all off. I was in and out in like 10 minutes. The only reason I think I even tipped was cause I just walked in, and was already getting my hair cut. Thinking about buying my own clippers and just buzzing my own hair. Might save more money than razors.

$8-$10 dollars is the norm for most non metrosexual salon gayish places. When I used to go to the Puerto Rican barber shop near my place, they'd charge $15 for a line-up and short blend. But I cut my own hair because it gets expensive to spend $30 a month on the coiffure.

Line-up's are gay, though. I mean, people thought that shit was cool when Reggaeton had it's 15 minutes, but it was always gay.

And I went to a beauty salon, like any normal Mexican.

I didn't do it for some tie-in to a reggaton fettish, it was the only hair cut they knew how to do. I told them fade because that's what I normally would get. But, now its just a one and done...

how do u guys know all these haircut terms?

For about 10 years every haircut I got I just said "#3 on the sides, trim it on top", then I grew my hair out some and had no clue how to get a real haircut tbh.

Just random conversing through the years...I would do the same, then the barber would say the term and thus, that's how I learned all the hair speak. Other times, modern pop culture such as Jersey Shore and the like would educate me further. (e.g. the Poof and such...).

What's a double zero?

You should buy some beard clippers from the store and do your own, good for trimming facial hair and sideburns when ever you want also. Then take a razor to it to shave your head.

Zero or a half faded into a 3 on the top with my bangs just a tad longer, my go to hair cut.

Funny question...last time I got my hair cut the lady and I were trying to figure out how long she had been cutting my hair...we decided on 20 years...I don't think she has raised her price for me in 10 years..she spends a full 30 minutes usually and charges $14 and I always give her $20. She rocks.

That's what I do now, much cheaper. Bought a professional clipper set for like $40. I still get the occasional line up now and then.

Tipping? lol I used to get a fade in Eagle Pass for 7 bucks, no tips...

12 bucks for a haircut is way too much, and if you still have it cholo bald, then they ripped you off.

How lazy do you have to be to not cut your hair with one number... seriously.

What if the barber "owns" the shop. It's just him and his wife. He charges $12.

If you're cool with him and he shoots the shit with you without being wierd about it and does a good job, put down 15 and he keeps the change.

yeah, it sickens me to see pretty much every business with a fucking tip jar... it's like your supposed to tip once they put it there, and if you don't you're an asshole.

:lol

Not the stache...she is GREAT on the hair but she's a little bubble headed on getting the left/right to match on the facial hair...I always have to go home and "level" my sideburns...I'm afraid to let her do the stache...

If they own the place, then technically you are not expected to tip. I still do, however, I do not tip 20% on mine because she is self-employed. She keeps the full amount of what I pay and pays her booth rent to the salon, as opposed to the guy I know who actually works for a shop and gets 50% of what the salon collects. As good of a job as she does, a $10 tip on top of the $120 was more than enough for her time. Even if her overhead is 50%, she still pocketed $65.

Friend told me about this website last week. It's pretty solid. They knew their stuff about traditional wet shaving and suits, so the rest is probably spot on.

I'm pretty sure the reason they have those tip lines on the receipt is because they use one of those generic, mass-produced credit/debit systems, and that's probably just the only option that they have. I've seen the same type used at smaller food establishments, or at places like barbers or bars, where tipping would be more appropriate.

You're not expected to leave a tip just because there is a line for it there (unless it's an appropriate tipping situation). But I'm sure if you fill it in, they aren't going to stop you.
