In the wild, whales swim up to 100 miles a day.
In captivity, they swim around in circles.
In the wild, whales will dive hundreds of feet into the water.
In captivity, since the tank is not much deeper than 20 feet, they don't have the space to dive.
In the wild, whales use a highly developed sonar, also known as echo location, to hunt for food, to find each other, and to explore the depths of the vast ocean-their true home.
In captivity, in a sterile, chlorinated, desolate tank, they have no use for their sonar and it becomes a form of sensory deprivation.
In the wild, whales stay with their families throughout their entire lives. They are extremely social animals that hunt together, play together, sleep together, explore together, and communicate constantly using a dialect unique to each family pod.
In captivity, they no longer have their families. Lolita in particular (Miami Seaquarium) has been without any other orca for 23 years. (Hugo, the only other orca the Seaquarium ever had, was kept in a separate and much smaller tank than Lolita before she arrived. As former trainers can tell you, Hugo went insane and killed himself by repeatedly slamming his head on the wall).
In the wild, orcas are free to make their own decisions--to play and swim and hunt and mate and truly LIVE their lives.
In captivity, they are slaves held against their will for human entertainment and profit.
These are the facts and Tim Duncan supports the idea of dolphins and whales in captivity.

and sons I don't care if this was a charity event with season ticket holders ... the hypocrisy of it all is shameful for Tim to even take part in this. yea so he swims around with the Beluga whale, makes it do a few tricks for their entertainment, then leaves it alone to swim around in that tiny bath tub / joke of a swimming pool it is forced to live in. Tim shouldn't support this type of crap.

You wanna talk heart-rending cruelty? Forget our beloved flippered mammalian friends, man: inhumane is being George Shinn's captives for 20+ years, then becoming orphaned wards of the NBA with an unsure future in NOLA. And it's even worse for LA Hornets fans considering the Jazz already Dear-Johned their unfortunate asses.
Shit -- if Hornets fans were to have their collective stomach pumped, the contents would include crow feathers, unfulfilled promise, and Shinn-mank floating around in a dismal mirepoix of flood water, petroleum waste and unspooled Clifton Chenier 8-tracks.
We need an NPO to save you Hornets fans the agony of another season surrendered and another city abandoned. If Sally Struthers isn't available, maybe Tim can do y'all a solid and do a fundraiser for the cause. :lol

Seriously, this is the reason why I don't go to Sea World. I do think it is cruel to do this (no I don't go to the zoo either. However, I am not a militant PETA activist and won't get all over someone because they do go. This is a personal choice for me and I will generally only bring it up if someone asks me why I don't go to Sea World.
I don't go to the rodeo for the same reason. Tying a rope around the balls? That just ain't cool, gotta show some male solidarity since we all know how bad that would feel.

and son other than the natural causes in the wild, we know of 3 things that are killing dolphins and other marine animals ...
1. Pollution caused by humans
2. Fishing nets caused by humans
3. Captivity industry caused by humans
see a trend there? ... and it sucks that Duncan (who seems like a nice guy) supports this crap.

Yea son its perfectly ok and humane to put a free ranging, sonic creature that is used to swimming 80+ miles a day in a concrete swimming pool where they can swim in circles and dive 20ft deep!

Son this is about the cruel captivity industry which is nothing more than a money making business. All the conservation and research talk they preach is complete bs ... its all about the money.
Pollution on the otheer hand is unfortunately (for now) a necissary evil, but just like everything else most humans pollute more than their fair share and abuse it.
