View Full Version : bleacher: The Top 10 Gregg Popovich Quotes of All TIME

some are really funny and didn't see posted

“You have to make shots to win basketball games and we didn't do that. You also have to get back on defense, so it was a double-whammy.”

“Eliminating back-to-backs when you go in the wrong direction and lose time and go to bed at 4 in the morning for the second game is very difficult for teams, as we have learned. You just can't bring the juice for 48 minutes. It shows in the discipline on the court and the execution on the court. If it was possible to change the entire schedule for everybody to have fewer of those, the quality would improve, without a doubt.”

“We didn't send mariachi bands or birthday cards or breakfast in bed.” :lol

“And I look forward to seeing all of you in four or five years when we have the next Nellie retirement party in another town.”

“We suck on 'D. Both individually and team-wise, we suck. We're pretty consistent that way. I don't know if I have an answer to that. If I did, we wouldn't suck quite so bad.” :lol

“I asked them if it wasn't too much trouble, if I wasn't being too pushy, if they could execute what we were trying to do. And if it didn't make them too angry, if they also wanted to play some defense on the other end, that would be great.”

“When I came down to St. Croix to see Timmy eight or nine years ago, nobody said a word to me (about driving on the left side), ... I got my rental car and I went out on the road, and I was gesticulating at like 10 people before I realized I was the jerk.”

“In Phil's case, I was personally thrilled he came back, because I think it's huge for the league. When you think about what he's done and how many championships he's won, there's always drama when he comes back in.”

“He found a realtor, looked at homes, bought one and furnished it, got a mortgage and the whole deal, ... Did it all when he was 19. I don't know if I could find my way out of town."

“We would have two less championships here if it was not for Manu Ginobili. In my eyes, he’s the stud of the world”

The famous: "He's Manu Ginobili" is missing, the greatest ?

That last one is a great one, but it has to be heard in context and you have to see his facial expression. On paper it's not that great.

This is more of a Timmy quote but I liked it:

Back in 08-09, the Heat were in town. Manu and Parker were hurt. Pop used a lineup that had Anthony Tolliver, Desmon Farmer, a rookie George Hill, and Tim Duncan. During a timeout, Pop says:

Pop: Who are all you guys?
Timmy: I'm Tim Duncan. I've been playing here for the last 12 years.

Great coach. Just not that quotable (probably by design).

Pop's classic deadpan. I would think the Spurs should have lots of British fans with Pop's dry sense of humor, but they like their stupid footy too much over there.

Nice list and posts, thanks Brazil and other posters. :tu

I agree with y'all about the "He's Manu Ginobili" deadpan, but I think only Spurs fans would get it. Thanks for posting it, carina - it always makes me laugh out loud. Pop often fucks with Bucher who is King of the Obvious Question. :lmao

Pop is so dry and sarcastic in answer to stupid, repetitive, annoying questions, and makes no bones about it that he holds the entire "interview" process in complete disdain. Good on him. Screw those wannabe journalists and their bullshit questions. He and Phil both treat it with the utter lack of respect it deserves. I'm not saying media interviews don't have a place in the NBA, just that there are far too many of them at inappropriate times when really, there's not much to say (or it's the commentators who should be doing the analysis), and it's clear Pop and Phil feel that way too.

Here some new ones:

“The guy hasn't played in five months or something like that. We're not just going to throw that guy in there just because he's a scorer. ... It's not like I'm going home and beating my head against the wall about how I'm going to get him in the rotation.”

“I'm not one to blow smoke at my players. They kicked our butts on the offensive boards. And it's not just because the ball came their way.”

this one is great:
“It took him almost the whole game to feel comfortable with his shot. He had to hit the bathroom about seven or eight times during the game. We tried not to play him too many minutes in a row, tried to pace him in between bathroom runs.” (http://www.quotesdaddy.com/quote/1298659/gregg-popovich/it-took-him-almost-the-whole-game-to-feel-comfortable)

Spurs themes from the 2007 season: (I love the first one, perfect Popovich quote)

1.) Expect nothing. Ask for nothing

2.) Do not give in

3.) Do not be in a hurry to win. Win in 48 minutes. Trust our system

4.) Support and play for your teammates

Pop is one of the few that has the balls to really answer questions in a way that makes the reporter feel pretty fuckin stupid for asking in the first place. It's great watching him dominate their stupid ass questions.

I love his responses in the in-game interview after the first and third quarters. The interviewer will ask something like, "You guys didn't score a lot in that first quarter, what does your team need to do?" Pop, "Make more shots." Or "(Insert player name here) has basically scored at will, what are your plans on stopping him?" Pop, "Play better defense." :lol I love those.

"Now, if a player does not have an altercation on or off the court once each month, we fine him. I've tried to get this into the press, but people won't pay attention. And, the guys who are our top four scorers, each of them will be required once every two months to appear on MTV. And the guys who shoot the worst free throws over a one-month period, the next time we have a TV game, they are required to look into the camera and beat their chests after they make a good play. I think then we will have a little bit different reputation."

- Gregg Popovich.

I've had that in my sig for about a year now

There's also some head-scratchers...

After Parker threw away a pass in practice, Popovich yelled, "Jason wouldn't have done that."

Said Popovich: "If Jason Kidd were available tomorrow, I'd go after him because he is the best player at his position. I love Tony Parker. But our job is to improve and I definitely think he and Jason Kidd could have played together. But because it's a business, you deal in reality. I want him to understand there is no crying in basketball. There is no moaning and groaning in basketball. The sooner he realizes that and plays with that type of ferocity, the sooner he'll be an even greater player."
