Would like some names of apartments, townhomes, condos, duplexes etc. to check out. Also, name the places to avoid.

Thanks for your help. :)

how much do you want to pay, how many bedrooms and what side of town?

1 bedroom, not too much $$, and northwest. A place that has easy access to the expressway. My viejo will be working out of town, south of San Antonio.

Do NOT go to Rancho Mirage. $520 for an 1100 sq ft 2 bed 2 bath apartment. It looks like a good deal, but there is a reason for the word Mirage in their name. Las Cimas wasnt bad. Stone oak place, not as bad as Ghetto Mirage, but not great. Those are the only apartments I have lived in the NW side of town. My best experience with an apartment was living down by sac in the Monte Vista area. They have the Best deals around, you are within two minutes of 3 major highways and the area is just real nice, good peeps and such.

I live in Lincoln Village off Jackson Keller 1 bedrooms start at $439
with washer and dryer. I live in a 750 sq ft Apt for $555. Its not bad and centrally located. But if you want NW you may try three fountains off Culebra those are nice, My mother in law stays there.

Can't help you with any apartment info but good luck! You will love San Antonio. I live on the northeast side. I hate the traffic on Bandera road and the northwest side.

Well, if you keep your search only to the inner west side and southside, that's what you're going to get.

I guess if I had to pick an apt around here I would look elsewhere too.
:lol

SA has so many little nice neighborhoods though, you should just come up one weekend and drive around. We live in Live Oak and have never had a problem.
Rolling Oaks mall and the Forum, what else do I need?? Oh yeah, I could use a Central Market.

You gotta be shitting me. Crime is everywhere in SA. Lets not be stupid and just think it only happens in the west and southside. Take a look at the stats.

Yes it happens everywhere, but if you're watching the news and they're talkinbg about a rape or murder or gang fight... it's either the inner west or southside.

Violent crime happens less in the northside whether its northwest, far northwest, north central, northest, far north central, etc.)

Jesus, I live in this city, I should know.

Take a look at the stats. The only thing you can do is be aware of your surroundings. There is no way to prevent these things nor predict when or where they will happen. Just protect yourself and your home
thats all you can do. I would say that you stay on NW to NC side of town crime may be a little less.

Scary, only if you're paranoid.

People get murded in rural Iowa, in rural Idaho.

Oooo... scary. I ain't moving to a rural area... ever!

Oh wait... I don't live irrationally.

Will you be working or going to school? That will be a consideration. Also if your Viejo will be driving south of town you might want to look at the roads and highways he will have to take.

First of all get a grip. I am moving from a location where murders don't occur everyday, month or year for that matter. So, if I read information and statistics about a new area, it will be off putting and not just for me, for whomever is not used to hearing or reading such things.

I won't be working, going to school full time. The fact that my viejo is going to be working out of town is another reason we are looking at a small town as another option.

I grew up in the Valley and even though crime does occur it does not compare to SA. She is moving from a small town atmosphere to a big city. Give her a break. She has every right to be concerned.

BadlyDrawnBoy

Seeing as its deep in the Valley, right next to Mexico, I'm sure it's not clean of crime.

But fault me for putting the pieces together.

Health Science Center.

The medical center.

Trust me, leaving in a small surburb outside of SA will be hell for you driving in and trying to get into the medical center.

Just pick an apartment complex somewhere near and enjoy.

But please try and avoid being murder, stabbed, raped, beaten, robbed, hurt, killed, shot, etc.

Just sayin... :lol

It will not be the first time that I would be living in a larger city. I lived in Houston till I was 13. Crime was rampant. I have enjoyed my time in the valley, small town living is not for everyone, but I have grown accustomed to it.

At $695-$885 for a 1/1 they can keep them. :lol

MannyIsGod
05-30-2005, 03:15 PM
Yeah, those are really nice but they are expensive.

The bottom line is that if you want a nice apartment you're going to have to pay for it. There are plenty of decent places to live around the NW side, but you're not going to find something for very cheap that has everything you want.

My advice to you? Live near SAC. There are duplexes that are priced very well, and the neighborhood actually has life. The crime isn't as bad as you're making it out to be , though. Things happen everywhere, but people tend to be more vocal when they have something to bitch about.

The Medical Center area is pretty central to anything you need, and has plenty to choose from. It's not bad, but I still prefer the neighborhoods near SAC.

I would avoid International Residence on Cinnamon Creek. They have really cheap prices but you'll pay for it with shitty mangement

You can find a great neighborhoods in S.A. but I would do what someone else suggested and drive around and find a neighborhood/area you like -- then check up on that area to see if it meets your standards. We live on the far NW side just inside 1604. I don't know if you want to be this far North.

Kori Ellis

What do you guys consider NW side?

Some people consider it around 281 and 1604. Others think of it around 10 and 1604. Other people consider it around Medical Center.

Mr Dio
05-30-2005, 04:53 PM
Gatita, I live on Babcock & Wurzbach about 1 minute from the Med Cntr school/track & apprx 2min from 410 & 4min from I-10. There are some nice places here but how much did you have for a limit? My apts are older, woodsy but decent & not expensive. There are other apts that have less trees but newer & more expensive bldgs/apts. Some people I've spoken too think my apts are cool others think old. I like the $454/mo for the small apt vs. $650/mo for something I will never own. I live 10min from work & can tell you it is SO awesome to not have a longer commute either way.

Shelly
05-30-2005, 04:54 PM
Kori, I consider our area the NW side. As is Helotes. I always thought 281 was North Central.

Anything from the Crossroads area down to near Ingram and out is NW side. I the rest is North Central, especially anything near 281.

The Med Center is also NW, but it's really kind of it's own area.

i live right across the street from there, and it used to be pretty shitty. now however, they got new management, have totally revamped the buildings, renamed it Villages of Cinnamon Creek, and they are finally weeding out most of the hoodrats and cholos. i still dont know if i would trust it though :)

well remember that 90% of the peopel who even know about that site go to it to report a bad experiance..........

Walnut HIll i nthe Med. center isn't that bad... good price, large community, and close to highway.

HIll Country Village on Babcock has very large apt's at a very good price... place doesn't look that updated but it's quieter than you would think.

Vista Del Rey just got bought out and it's rates went up.. also major ant problems that spraying all the time doesn't fix.

www.rent.com
www.forrent.com
and
www.sanantonioapartments.com (i think thats the right addy)
are all excellent, thats how I found my apt.'s when i was moving to SA.

ObiwanGinobili

For me anything from 281 to Ingram between 410 and 1604 is northwest side.I consider north of 1604 to be "out of town".

I live right off of Medical @ Babcock and my DH works on San Pedro, he never takes the highway to work adn still manages to get there in about 15 min.s (taking the highway would probebly double that).
I pay $610 for a 2 bed 2 bath on a dead end and a view of the pool.. i feel like i got an excellent deal, it's quite here and there is never any police problems.

Gatita

Manny is right about the Creek. Car break ins were big when I was there.

I've been all over the city and the DeZavala/IH 10 area is probably the best. Doesn't work out too well for you though if your man is going to be working on the southside.

The worst experience was probably living off of Martin Luther King and Highway 90.

Well I understand you not wanting to move to certain areas even if others dont. This is the main reason I cautioned against rancho mirage, it's deceiving because it's in a decent part of town (med center) but it is like they took an area from the east side and transplanted it over there. I lived there for 9 months and saw multiple cop cars there almost every day (no exagerration) saw 3 shootings (everyone missed) and one incident of four guys beating the shit out of another guy's brand new car with bats and bricks, yelling "who rules the hood now bitch" as one of them jumped back in the getaway car. As I said they look like they have good deals, but there is a reason for the word mirage in the title.
SAC area is really nothing like that and it would be just north of downtown so your husband wouldnt have to drive as far and although you would be driving farther than if you lived in the med center it kind of compromises between where you have to go and where he has to go.

I have also heard great things about the south alamo area directly south of downtown but havent lived there so couldnt tell you much about it.

If you don't want to worry about crime:

A. Move into a cave like Bin Laden.

When I lived at Stone Oak Place we all got notes taped to our doors reminding us to lock them because some girl got raped in the parking lot. And remember last year when that guy hit up 3 different apartment complexes raping some girls over a span of a couple of weeks. I dont see what you got offended by she didnt say that San Antonio is as hateful and crime riddled as Gotham city, she just asked our expertise, as residents, as to where she could live to avoid certain things and where to get certain things. As far as the small town argument, my experience has been that small towns do have lower crime rates (i.e. when I lived in converse the only things we had to contend with were the COC gang).

we move to Sa from Victoria alomost 4 years ago , and wee worried about hte crime rates and crime ridden areas. And why not? We KNEW which areas of Victoria to avoid (basialy every area) but were totally unfamiliar with SA.. so we asked around. think you should to, and I'm glad to see you have.
Some people are ust so uber sensitive like this city is Fing gold or something.

We've lived in Leon Valley for 2 years and now the Med. Center for 2 years.. with no problems at all. So I can highly recomend thses 2 areas.
I have a cousin who lives in Windcrest.. but she says its more picky chosy over there.. things can change real quick form one street to another. She's lived ther for 8 years.

The farther Northwest you go, the more expensive apartments are going to get - especially around I-10 and 1604 because those are all new neighborhoods. I've lived at De Zavala and I-10 (HELL - De Zavala sucks when it comes to traffic ALL THE TIME) - I've also lived in the Medical Center (just moved out of there actually) - and the location was good, but most of those complexes are pretty old - and don't move to Montage at North Point (formally Shallow Creek), the management sucks. They're under "new management" and if you go they'll probably give you a song and dance abotu it, but bottom line, they suck, and the apartments are falling apart, even though they don't look like it.

I just moved near SAC, and the location is great (near all the major freeways) and you can get some great deals in houses/duplexes with more personality that actually have some structural intergrity. If you want my realator's information I can give it to you, she helped me find a really great guesthouse right across the street from San Antonio Academy, and it's been working out really well. Good luck!

Converse isn't a shit hole. It's just like living in a small town. Not at all a high crime area.

Roosevelt High School is on the Northeast side of town. Converse is East/Northeast. Parts of the Northeast have declined in the last 5-10 yeasr, but others have grown and prospered. The area around IH35 and 1604 is very nice and not overcrowded.

converse is a shithole. the walzem road/rittiman road area near Roosevelt hs is a shithole. east sa where sam houston high school is a shithole. a lot of sa is a shithole. exceptions part of the northwest, stone oak and heights.

Only 3 areas in SA??? Maybe you need to get out more.

not sure if anyone has said this already, but take a look at villlage at hampton cove or promontory point. hampton cove is a little cheaper, but they are both very nice. and most apartments will give you deals. like one month free or something like that so the price listed is not always what you will pay.

Awwwww hell no not Promontory Pointe. I checked that place out, you can get a house for what they're asking for there for an apt. But, it is nice lol

Converse isn't a shit hole.
i guess it is a subjective thing, but i wouldn't suspect they would build new trailors from the 40s and new kb homes from the 60s and 70s in a prosperous place.

Hampton Cove
1 Bedroom 1 $755 - $845
2 Bedroom 2 $915 - $1140

I think Gatita is looking for an apartment around $500.

Honestly, it all comes down to how much you want to pay. The best is going to cost the most, and the worst is going to cost the least. I'd be leary of a deal that was too good. Jessica saw an apartment off of Mullberry that was 900 Sq Ft. A ONE BEDROOM!!! And it was dirt cheap too.

Well, with all that room came an apartment that smelled kinda of old, had no central air, and was in a suspect neighborhood.

Xolotl

They still have places with no central air???? Damn if that's not one of man's greatest inventions it sure is way the hell up there

MannyIsGod

The problem you run into is that it's really expensive to live on your own. You pay at least 500 (usually) for a decent 1 bdrm but you only pay a small amount more for a 2 bdmn which makes it way more cost effective to have a roomate.

I always liked having a roomate when I was younger; there was always something going on. Good times.

But anyhow, you could always come up and talk to an apartment locator. Tell them what your budget is and they should be able to work within that.

I will say this, most decent 1bdms in the Med Center or NW area will run more than 500 a month.

Yeah!!! I couldn't fucking believe it! And the leasing agent wasn't even going to say shit untill I brought it up. I noticed that there was no thermostat at all.

The only thing you had was a system with fans that blew in air cooled by water. In the winter, they switched it to a heater system, so you got warm air. You could control the strength of the fan but that was it.

FUCK THAT. Especially in the Fall/Winter where you can go from 30 degrees one day and have 90 the next. It's a bullshit system, but the apartment was HUGE and really cheap.

I can't imagine that in San Antonio! Out in the desert southwest they call those "swamp coolers", and they're used extensively because of the low humidity levels. They work well here where total annual rainfall is only 7" or so.

In SA a swamp cooler would suck.

Yeah, it's my understanding they also have them in places up North were the buildings are way older but the demand for central air isn't great because it's not that hot.

They have them in older houses in Los Angeles too. It's hard to find an older house in LA with central air (of course all the new ones have it -- but new houses usually suck).

MannyIsGod
05-31-2005, 05:36 PM
Yeah, I'm not really down with new houses. When I have the money too, I plan on buying a house near downtown either in King William or Monte Vista because they are AMAZING.

It would be expensive to fix one up but I think it would be entirely worth it, espeically since I could do a lot of the work myself.

I really do love old houses though.

Xolotl
05-31-2005, 05:44 PM
Yeah especially when you look at the old houses when they're fixed up can go for alot alot more than the newer houses that are 3x as big.

You do realize that, especially in older homes with no or insufficient duct space that having a new system installed (including the duct work, etc) can run upwards of about $16,000?

I've got a few estimates if you don't believe me. :)

For someone that doesn't have a lot of money and needs the space, that'd be perfect. I don't know why they wouldn't at least have a window unit...there are some really good ones out there that have heat, too..and they aren't that expensive.

My GRANDMOTHER had a watercooler in her house when we were little....that thing used to scare me.

I don't know much about the NW side as far as living...but I had an apartment right off 410 & Starcrest.....and Thousand Oaks & Nacogdoches......that were pretty nice and weren't too expensive....probably still a little too far NE from the Med Center, though.

I think Gatita is looking for an apartment around $500.

Plenty of those but you'd want one that doesn't have a ton of Riff Raff either.
We pay less than $455 for a small 1bdrm & we're right on the corner of Wurzbach/Babcock.

Palermo

Ventana
San Miguel

I'm sure it's super expensive to convert the system over to actual central air. But it would probably be worth it in the long run. Those apartments were absolutely giagantic for the price, but not having central air is a huge hinderance.

Also, it stank. :lol

That's a good deal. Much lower than their advertised prices.

They usually have move in specials you can get, so the advertised prices are usualy higher than what you'll pay.

The thing is SW, we're not talking about a house. We're talking about a rather large set of adjoined apartment complexes. It's not as though these are owned by a single landlord without the money or colateral to get the $$$ to do the job.

But hey, if the company is making money the way it is, more power to them I guess.
