Wildly successful Spurs are bland everywhere but win column (http://www.mercurynews.com/warriors/ci_17178357)

The San Antonio Spurs come to Oakland Monday night. If you've been anticipating this moment, you're not of this generation.

That's OK, for neither are the Spurs.

In this age of TMZ and tabloid journalism, they are the network nightly news.

In the era of YouTube and reality TV, where talent is not a requirement for glory, they are a nightly documentary.

In a world addicted to fortified drinks and Facebook, the Spurs are three squares a day, a good book at night and eight hours of sleep.

In a neon nation, they're a bland shade of beige -- which explains why the enduring excellence of these four-time champions is so, well, under cover.

NBA headlines and highlights this season have gone to Kobe and the Hollywood Lakers, to the South Beach "Heatles" or the Last Chance Celtics. The constant chatter is about Blake Griffin's last dunk or Carmelo Anthony's next team, about Amare Stoudemire resurrecting the Knicks or Derrick Rose reviving the Bulls.

Meanwhile, San Antonio has the league's best record. The Spurs are 36-7, on pace to win 70 games.

The Spurs won't get to 70, though, because that would be too gaudy. That would create a stir, invite too much attention. Winning 70 might make the Spurs kind of like "... stars.

Their coach, whose name remains one of the most misspelled in sports despite trailing only Phil Jackson for championships among active coaches, wants no such thing. Gregg "Three g's" Popovich is stubborn enough and practical enough to sacrifice a few late-season wins if it will keep his team fresh for the postseason.

And Pop's most significant player, who remains one of the least publicized in sports despite 13-plus peerless seasons, wants whatever his coach wants.

Because that, friends, has put Tim Duncan at the doorstep of the Hall of Fame.

Popovich and Duncan to the NBA are like vegetable platters at a full buffet, well intended but barely noticed. They are the primary reasons why San Antonio, the model American franchise, top to bottom, in sports or out, is relegated to the tiniest corner of the league's marquee.

That's how it is and that's how the Spurs like it.

They've made 30 playoff appearances in 34 seasons, including 13 in a row, and own the NBA's best record over the last decade. No team in sports is more accustomed to and comfortable with winning in obscurity, maintaining elite status in a vacuum.

Yet when it comes to glorification, they are content to exist on "mute." It's as if their championship trophies are hidden in the back of the closet.

You can go to any city in the world and find Yankees fans and Lakers fans. You can walk into any mall in America and find Steelers fans and Red Sox fans and Raiders fans. Good luck finding a Spurs fan outside greater San Antonio.

They're neither loved nor hated. Reaction to the Spurs tends to be respectful indifference or tepid appreciation. This was true when they were winning championships in 1999 and 2003 and 2005 and 2007, and it's no different in 2011.

Just when it seemed the Spurs would be too old to keep up with today's NBA, much less have a chance to conquer it, they're reminding us they're still current and dangerous. They're kicking butt from coast-to-coast on a regular basis.

Though some believe Popovich is a lucky beneficiary of Duncan's metronomic effectiveness, the coach -- with tremendous assistance from his front office -- is doing a marvelous job of rebutting that claim. These Spurs are winning because they have continuity at the top and because they have a knack for discovering the right role players.

They don't have a 20-point scorer or anyone grabbing 10 rebounds a game or anyone who wound rank among the top three at his position. Not point guard Tony Parker, not wings Manu Ginobili and Richard Jefferson -- not even Duncan, who at this stage of his career averages 29 minutes per game.

But DeJuan Blair, a second-round draft choice in 2008, produces like a lottery pick, itinerant vets Antonio McDyess and Matt Bonner are stable and productive, and unheralded youngsters George Hill, Gary Neal and James Anderson keep feeding the machine.

The faces on the floor change -- we remember Bruce Bowen and Brent Barry and, yes, Stephen Jackson -- but the results stay the same.

With Duncan turning 35 in April and Ginobili 33, this team's window should be closing. But the Spurs concede nothing. They simply keep going.

They will stroll into Oracle Arena Monday night seeking their 11th straight win -- and 46th in 53 games -- over the Warriors. Step right up to see a team that has perfected the art of workaday winning.

At least it is about a 100% certainty that the Spurs can find a way to put the ball in the basket in the Warriors game.

Red Rocket remains grounded (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2011/01/23/red-rocket-remains-grounded/)
Jeff McDonald

..."It’s frustrating, because I can walk on it fine,” Bonner said. “But if I try to do anything else, like run or jump, it hurts.”

...Bonner’s availability is subject to his own pain tolerance. He did not sound confident he could play tonight against Golden State.

“I could probably go out there and hobble around on it,” Bonner said, “But that doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.”

...Rookie guard James Anderson, out since Nov. 11 with a stress fracture in his right foot, is not going on the Spurs’ three-game road trip. He is slated to begin a rehab assignment with the Development League’s Austin Toros soon.

...(Hill) expects to be available again tonight.

“I’ll just get it looked at, taped up and padded pretty good, and go out there and see how it feels,” Hill said

Warriors vs. San Antonio (http://www.mercurynews.com/warriors/ci_17178366)
By Marcus Thompson II

...San Antonio update: The Spurs have won eight of their last 10 games and own the best record in the NBA. San Antonio's 13-5 road record is also league best. ... Guard Manu Ginobili's offense has tapered off a bit in January. He's averaging 17.3 points on 38.6 percent shooting in his last 12 games. Entering this month, he was averaging 19 points on 44.8 percent shooting. ... Sharp-shooting forward Matt Bonner has missed the Spurs last four games with a sore right knee. San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich seems a little irritated. "It is what it is," he told NBA.com. "I don't know what the hell is wrong with (Bonner). His knee hurts. They just tell me when he can play and when he can't."

There could be a chance of back-to-back losses here, but i just can't see it happening, the Spurs will get back to winning ways and i hope they have a big win over the Warriors, don't want to see another v Hornets like display.

San Antonio (37-7) at Golden State (19-24) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2011012409)

The NBA-leading San Antonio Spurs are coming off their worst offensive performance of the season.

A matchup with the Golden State Warriors could help them get back on track.

The Spurs look for an 11th consecutive win over the host Warriors when the teams meet Monday night.

San Antonio’s eight-game winning streak came to an unceremonious end Saturday night with a 96-72 defeat at New Orleans - its most lopsided loss of 2010-11, and lowest scoring output since 2007-08.

“You have to give them credit for their defense,” said Tim Duncan, who had six points while shooting 2 of 11. “They were very good (Saturday) and they did not give us a lot of stuff. On top of that, we missed a lot of shots.”

San Antonio (37-7) shot 36.2 percent from the field for the night, and let the game slip away after getting outscored 31-10 in the third quarter.

The 10 points were San Antonio’s fewest in a quarter since recording nine in the fourth of a 90-64 loss at Utah on April 4, 2008, while the 72 points were the fewest for the Spurs since a 72-65 win at Portland two days later.

Tony Parker was the only Spurs starter to score in double figures Saturday. He finished with 10 points but failed to record an assist for the first time this season.

Manu Ginobili, averaging a team-best 18.5 points, was held to a season-low four. He has scored at least 27 points in two of his last three road games against the Warriors.

The Spurs have enjoyed plenty of success offensively against Golden State, averaging 115.4 points on 51.5-percent shooting during their winning streak in the series, which reached 10 after a 118-98 road victory Nov. 30 and a 111-94 home win Dec. 8. The Warriors are allowing 106.5 points per game on the season - third-most in the league.

The Warriors (19-24) had their season-best four-game winning streak snapped Saturday night with a 113-109 loss at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Monta Ellis, whose 25.8 points per game rank fourth in the league, shot 6 of 21 while playing through an ankle injury and finished with 17 points.

Stephen Curry, who had 34 points in Friday night’s 119-112 overtime win over Sacramento, scored 32 in the loss to the Clippers.

“I think he played well; he’s looking for and taking his shots more,” Warriors coach Keith Smart said. “I think he needs to do that more than trying to pass to everyone. That opens up his passing game, by trying to make plays for himself first then others.”

Curry also had 32 points against the Spurs in November, but sprained his ankle during the Dec. 8 loss and failed to score a point.

Golden State is opening a season-high eight-game stretch at home, where it has won four straight and seven of eight. The Warriors are averaging 107.9 points at home - second-most in the NBA.

The Spurs have lost three straight when allowing 100 points or more.

The Warriors’ home-heavy portion of the season continues on Monday when they host the San Antonio Spurs . The first of eight-straight home games for the Warriors will mark one of Jack’s Box Office Specials at Oracle Arena, allowing fans to get tickets for as little as $15, plus a free menu item at Jack in the Box with each ticket purchased. The Western Conference showdown will tip off at 7:30 p.m., and fans unable to attend the game will be able to follow the action live on CSN Bay Area (HD) and KNBR 680.

Golden State has won seven of its last eight home games, including each of the last four. The last two home wins have come in dramatic fashion thanks in large part to Monta Ellis. The sixth-year Warriors guard knocked down a last-second jumper to beat the Pacers (http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/recap_011911.html) on Wednesday, and a nearly identical shot forced overtime in Friday’s win over the Kings (http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/recap_012111.html). Ellis, fourth in the NBA with 25.8 points per game, continues to be a strong candidate to make next month’s All-Star Game, and both his teammates and opponents throughout the NBA think he deserves to be there (http://www.nba.com/warriors/fanzone/dotcom_blog_012011.html).

While Ellis has been one of the league’s best guards throughout the season, Stephen Curry has recently taken his game to another level. He had 34 points on Friday and 32 more in Saturday’s loss to the Clippers (http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/recap_012211.html). In addition, he continues to lead the team with 5.9 assists per game. Ellis and Curry had already formed one of the NBA’s top backcourts, and how Curry has been playing lately eliminates any argument of that statement.

Both Curry and Ellis, who had 17 points and four assists in 42 minutes on Saturday after spraining his ankle the night before, will need to be at their best should the Warriors beat the Spurs, who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday night in New Orleans. San Antonio has been one of the biggest surprises in the NBA this season and currently has the league’s best record. Led by the outstanding trio of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan, the Spurs appear to have returned to championship form. Monday’s contest will certainly be a challenge, but the Warriors have proved that they can compete with anyone, especially at home.
