it would look really cool on paper to see '50' followed by 'single digit losses' imo

I don't think there's much of a chance the Spurs do it in 2010-11, but since you bring it up . . . .

Since 1986-87, it's only happened 3 times that a team won 50 of its first 60 games or fewer: the 72-win Bulls (1995-96) were 50-6; the 69-win Bulls (1996-97) were 50-7; and the 67-win Mavericks (2006-07) were 50-9. (Obviously, 2 of those teams ultimately won the title; one did not).

For what it's worth, since 86-87, the other "fastest" teams to 50 wins were (*=NBA Champion):

61 Games (50-11)
LAL (1999-00)*

62 Games (50-12)
LAL (2008-09)*
BOS (2007-08)*
DET (2005-06)
CHI (1991-92)*
LAL (1987-88)*

63 Games (50-13)
CLE (2008-09)

64 Games (50-14)
PNX (2006-07)
DAL (2005-06)
SAS (2005-06)
SEA (1995-96)
LAL (1986-87)*

65 Games (50-15)
CLE (2009-10)
SAS (2004-05)*
SEA (1997-98)
PNX (1992-93)
CHI (1990-91)*
DET (1989-90)*

the 67-win Mavericks (2006-07) were 50-9

That's kinda crazy, especially since they started that season 0-4. winning 50 out of 55 games is insane.

It's possible no doubt.

Personally no, I think not. 12-2 would have to be the record over the next 14 and that includes doing it over the rodeo road trip.

An extension to the original question, then: how many losses will the Spurs have when they get their 50th win? I'm thinking 12.

Since the merger, the Spurs have 20 seasons (to date) with at least 50 wins. In those seasons, they've gotten to 50 wins in the following number of games:

64 -- 2005-06 (63 wins)
65 -- 2004-05 (59 wins)
68 -- 1995-96 (59 wins); 1994-95 (62 wins)
70 -- 2006-07 (58 wins); 2002-03 (60 wins); 1993-94 (55 wins)
71 -- 2000-01 (58 wins)
73 -- 2007-08 (56 wins); 1997-98 (56 wins)
74 -- 2001-02 (58 wins); 1990-91 (55 wins)
75 -- 2003-04 (57 wins)
76 -- 1989-90 (56 wins)
77 -- 2008-09 (54 wins); 1982-83 (53 wins)
78 -- 1999-00 (53 wins); 1980-81 (52 wins); 1977-78 (52 wins)
81 -- 2009-10 (50 wins)

It still is quite hilarious to think that the Mavs finished with 67 wins and lost in the first round. Can you imagine if we were to finish this season 29-8 and get bounced by Portland in the first round? No wonder Mav fan is such a skitzo-ahole-loser, I could never recover from my favorite team going down in such historical choke job fashion.

69.35 -- 1998-1999 (60.68 wins, prorated)
70 -- 2006-07 (58 wins); 2002-03 (60 wins); 1993-94 (55 wins)
71 -- 2000-01 (58 wins)
73 -- 2007-08 (56 wins); 1997-98 (56 wins)
74 -- 2001-02 (58 wins); 1990-91 (55 wins)

78 -- 1999-00 (53 wins); 1980-81 (52 wins); 1977-78 (52 wins)
81 -- 2009-10 (50 wins)

I bolded the championship teams, and worked out what the numbers would have been in 1999; if you multiply the numbers from that season by 82/50, you get 60.68 wins total, with the 50.84th win coming in the 70.52th game. Then, I multiplied those last two decimals by 50/50.84, giving 50 wins in 69.35 games.

It's rather telling that 4 of the 5 best regular season Spurs teams in the Tim Duncan era have won the title.

Yeah, the only outlier being 06' which was a great team that let one get away. We would have had a good chance at beating the Suns and Heat.

Whatever you do, don't copy that into your browser. It's a losing streak virus.

Probably wont happen. That would mean 12-2 in the next 14. I see the Spurs going 10-4 during that stretch.
