Report: NBA Union head says lockout could wipe out next season (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/26/report-nba-union-head-says-lockout-could-wipe-out-next-season/)
Kurt Helin
There will be a lockout come July 1. Wish I had any reason at all to tell you otherwise, there just is no cause. Talks for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement are at a standstill right now.
The question remains: How bad a lockout? As in, lockout in July and August but solved in time for training camps to open on schedule and no games to be missed? Or, maybe something far worse?
NBA Players Union Executive Director Billy Hunter is telling players to prepare for the worst-case scenario, according to a report at Beyond the Beat (http://www.beyondthebeat.net/articles-2011/january/source-hunter-to-kings-qlockout-would-last-all-of-next-seasonq.html).
According to one source within the Sacramento Kings organization, Hunter met with the team two weeks ago and warned the players, “that the lockout would last all of next season”, if an agreement isn’t reached by June 30.
A number of Kings’ players confirmed Hunter did speak directly to the team, but would not expand on his year-long lockout stance.
“It could take a year. It could take a day. We really don’t know, but I know it’s a serious issue and I can see them (players’ association) pushing a lockout,” Carl Landry told Beyond the Beat.
NBA players are not exactly great at money management. And by that we mean they make a 17-year-old with a new credit card look level headed. Hunter knows if his players start going broke he will lose leverage for any harder line in the negotiations. So it is wise of him to scare his charges, to frighten them into putting some money away in the event of a really serious lockout. To that end, tell them they won’t get paid for a year.
Honestly, every time I write a lockout related story, I feel more pessimistic.

You seem like the kind of fake ass bitch who needs an analogy:
A guy posts incessantly about how much he's worth. He goes on and on and takes every opportunity to portray himself as a wealthy man. The man may indeed be wealthy, but he's still a low rent motherfucker with no class.
On the other hand, he's quite likely just a fucking turd burglar who's fronting online as someone he's not. It's not unheard of to do that, even if it's just an elaborate mental masturbation thing... it's still fake.
End of lesson.

Hunter is making sure the kids don't blow their wads in a month, then come running asking the union to agree to anything in order to get another paycheck. It's the sensible thing to do.

This would actually be great, the Spurs could repeat then. They will win this year and will automatically be given the trophy next year if there is a lockout, it's only logical to give it to the best team last to play.

I would 100% support a lockout because I think the NBA needs one to clean up its overall product and image. The NBA is very watered down and the league is losing money every second because people want a clean sport with some parity. You can't change the past. The Celtics and Lakers own half of the championships in the history of the NBA. Most of those championships were earned fairly and clean. I want to see more teams have a chance of at least getting to the Finals.

Meh, I don't have a problem with the parity in the NBA..not every sport can be like the NFL and NHL..
Obviously, I don't want to see Gasol-like collusion anymore, but that will never change, new CBA or not..
The small market argument really is overplayed IMO..a lot of small market teams have had a good chance to build quality teams, but were fucked, due to horrible moves in the front office and/or poor ownership..a lot of poor draft picks, lost opportunities and poor contracts that were given..
The NBA will always be different, because it's a superstar's league..one player can change everything, he can win games on his own..no other sport can say the same..you can change the CBA to avoid teams like the Heat and Lakers, but there will still be the same people complaining about parity, because the teams with the elite superstars always win..

This would be bad for the vet teams like the celts, Spurs Lakers and Mavs.
Would be great for the young upcoing teams like: The Bulls, Heat and OKC.
Vet or young the concern would be for the guys that do NOT work hard. Shaq may eat himself out of his last few seasons and Baron Davis will be right behind him.
Business wise you hurt your product. You have at least 4 legit contenders and Durant, Blake, Love, Rose as young studs with great stars like Kobe, lebron Wade, Manu duncan Dirk etc.
Plus if the NFL has labor woes it would be a chance for the NBA to dominate the Sports scene and baseball to gain back some ground. No season is disatrous IMHO but not fatal.

I'm guessing Stern taking a paycut is out of the question. :lol
I just would like to see a 4 or 5 year stretch in the NBA where the Lakers, Celtics, or Spurs are not in the Finals. It would be interesting to see.

OK, probably won't be answered in this thread, because people only discuss gayness and rape here, but still a couple of questions about the lockout.
What happens if there's a year long lockout with the contracts of the players? Do they lose a year off them, meaning all players with contracts ending on june 30th 2012 will be free agents next summer and all other players will have a year less of their contract's worth, or do the contracts simply continue from the 2012/2013 season with the salary and length they were originally supposed to be, meaning the salary of a player who's owned X amount of money for the 2011/2012 season will be the salary he gets in 2012/2013?
One more q - what happens with the eventual draft in 2012 if there's a year long lockout? Would it be cancelled? If so what happens with all the players out of college and eligible to be drafted then?

dude really...you really need someone to explain this to you? :bang
listen son a work stoppage means exactly what it implies...the players nor the owners earn money. The contracts (no matter how far they extend) currently on the books are null and voided if no new CBA is reached. If a new CBA is reached during the season then players and owners would have to restructure contracts based on the new CBA...and they'd get paid for whatever games are left for the season...so in this case Lebron, Wade, and Bosh's deals would be terminated...they'd have to renegotiate for even lesser pay...I'm sure though there would be a clause in the new CBA that would prevent Lebron, Wade, and Bosh from seeking employment with another team and basically force them to renegotiate with Miami...or maybe not...I think if the CBA expires and all those contracts are left on the table when a new one is reached then players should be able to go where ever they want...and no if no deal is reached by that time then no draft...College games will go on and those players would have to seek employment overseas as there would be no NBA to go to...
in laymen terms...the real legalese may be over your head...:toast

01-27-2011, 09:01 AM
^ lol son, you think the players will agree that all existing contracts are voided and re-negotiated? Seriously? Some will be restructured, for example, if one of the existing extensions is above the ( new ) max salary, but there's no way whatsoever that the players union accept having all contracts being voided.
As for the 2012 draft, if there's no 2011/2012 season, either the whole draft is called off, which I don't believe would happen, or the teams would keep the same picks that they have in the 2011 draft , unless there's another lottery poll.

Unless there is language in the contract itself stating that its enforceability is contingent on the CBA being in effect, this statement is wrong. And I doubt that's the case.
You're also wrong because a party to a contract can't just say "this contract is null and void" and get out its obligations. And that's basically what you think is going to happen with a lock-out. If ownership unilaterally stopped paying the players the players could sue for breach.
You might wanna get a refund on that J.D. of yours ...

I'm not sure if there has been a possible strike in two American professional sports leagues, but this would be pretty devastating for me and a great deal of fans. I don't really watch baseball or hockey, so the possibility of losing basketball and football would pretty much leave me with more free time to pursue the finer things SoCal has to offer I guess. It will be interesting (provided the two leagues cannot come to an agreement...) how long it would take for the fans to come back a la baseball in the 90's.
It would be a big mistake for the NBA. They took a huge hit with that shit that happened 11 years or so ago.
