Tiago Splitter isn’t getting much floor time with the Spurs as an NBA rookie.

But the Blumenau, Brazil native has landed himself a second job in the Alamo City.

Northside Ford has hired Splitter to be its first celebrity spokesperson.

Splitter, who was named MVP of the Spanish League last season while playing for Caja Laboral Vitoria, will appear in a series of television commercials for the San Antonio auto dealership.

The spots are part of Northside Ford’s new advertising campaign and are scheduled to run from February through May.

In one of the TV spots, the 6-11, 240-pound forward is dressed in rodeo gear, complete with cowboy hat and boots.

Northside Ford General Manager Jim Thompson says the dealership has always been supportive of the Spurs and is banking on Splitter’s future success in the NBA.

“We felt that Tiago, being a rookie and because of his European success, would be a great spokesperson for our dealership,” Thompson explains. “We think that this year, and in the coming years, he will be an asset to the Spurs.”

Northside Ford has inked Splitter to a one-year deal with an option for two more years.

Other Spurs have served in similar capacities, helping local dealers move their auto inventories.

Tim Duncan, for example, has had a lengthy relationship with the Gunn Automotive Group.

Manu Ginobili has also appeared in spots for Gunn.

Former Spur George Gervin, now a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, has appeared in spots for Jordan Ford previously.

In fact, San Antonio likely never would have had an NBA team if not for the help of auto magnate Red McCombs, who was part of the local group that moved the Dallas Chaparrals to San Antonio in 1973 and renamed them the Spurs.

Splitter becomes the latest connection between San Antonio’s only major league sports franchise and the local auto industry.

“We like Tiago,” Thompson says. “I think people will identify with him. He’s the understudy for Tim Duncan and I think he will be a centerpiece down the road.”
