NEW YORK, Jan. 27, 2011 – For the first time, fans have the opportunity to determine the participants in the Skills Challenge at All-Star Weekend as part of the “Choose Your Squad” program. In addition to adding a fan vote, the 2011 Skills Challenge will feature an expanded field from four to five participants.

Beginning today and running through 11:59 p.m. ET on Feb. 14, fans can log on to NBA.com/chooseyoursquad to choose from among eight players to determine four of the five participants in the 2011 event in Los Angeles. The players taking part in the “Choose Your Squad” vote include:

Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs
Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
Baron Davis, Los Angeles Clippers
Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls (2009 Champion)
Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings
John Wall, Washington Wizards
Derek Fisher, Los Angeles Lakers
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

The four finalists will compete against “Choose Your Squad” spokesman Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets. A three-time NBA All-Star and Skills Challenge (2006 to 2008) participant, Paul will chronicle his preparations on the program microsite NBA.com/chooseyoursquad. The site will also feature highlights of each of the eight players eligible in the fan vote.

This year’s event will include a new charitable element from NBA Cares and Taco Bell Foundation for Teens’ “Graduate to Go” program, a national initiative to help teens graduate from high school through real-world experiences. Each of the five participants will be matched with a teen member of a local Boys & Girls Club. The teen paired with the event winner will receive a four-year college scholarship, while the other scholarship winners will each receive an educational scholarship, all courtesy of the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens.

Introduced at NBA All-Star 2003 in Atlanta – the Skills Challenge will feature five players competing in a two-round timed “obstacle course” consisting of dribbling, passing, and shooting stations. All players must observe basic NBA ball-handling rules while completing the course. The two players with the fastest times from the first round advance to the finals with the order of competition determined by inverse order of the first-round times. At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

Last year in Dallas, Steve Nash finished with a winning time of 29.9 seconds, joining the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade (2006 and 2007) as the only other two-time winner in Skills Challenge history.

The Skills Challenge will be televised live nationally as part of the NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm, which will also feature the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, Haier Shooting Stars, and Sprite Slam Dunk. TNT and ESPN Radio’s national coverage will begin at 8 p.m. EST from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The 60th NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 20, will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio, and in more than 200 countries in more than 40 languages.

I won't be watching so I voted in anyone but him. I think Tony's earned the right to take a weekend off, kick back, and enjoy ABC's Sunday night line up.

No way! We need Tony to rest All Star weekend. Since we have very little defense in the paint we need all the quick guys on the perimeter to stay injury free if we are to have any chance @ #5 this year. Plus Pop needs to get us a BIG who can come off the bench and clog the middle. Other teams bigs are getting their personal best against our undersized little bigs.

Hopefully Pop won't pick Manu or Tim as backups. We've got to stay healthy.

I don't want him anywhere near LA or Eva. The last time was a disaster when he met up with her for lunch. His focus on the game was non-existent. :nope

Just voted. Oh my goodness, for those people who says he needs rest, all he's got to do is dress up, dribble, pass and shoot for all of 1 minute. I would say the chances of getting fatigued and injured because of doing the skills challenge would be very low.

Between that lunch and now, they have seen eachother a couple of times, and TP did still very well after that, so I don't think it matters

Voted! TP deserves it because he will most probably not be voted at the All-Star game, a little consolation for him. He deserves to have some fun in LA and enjoy. Besides, it's just a Skills Challenge! It is highly unlikely that he will injure himself, it's like 99.99% safe.

If theres anyone on the Spurs uniform that wants to be a part of the All Star break it's Tony...

While I'd be inclined to agree for the most part, if Parker is selected to participate, that is a lot of extra travel and time spent on the road, at events, doing P.R., etc...that could otherwise be spent chilling and resting. It's almost like he has to take on the hassle of going to the ASG without getting the fully glory.

I have to go to Jury Duty on Monday. Sure, I'll be glad to get out of work, but it's hardly a day off by any means.

That being said, a little camera time and two more flights isn't going to kill the guy or the team. Sure, it would be great for Tony to get a long weekend, but it's not the fan's job to coddle star players, and he'd probably enjoy being along with Pop (and Tim and/or Manu) for the ride.

For Tony, those travel, events and PR stuff are chillin' n resting for him, he enjoys those kind of things, and besides, he get to go with Pop, Tim and Manu, and probably Blair, Neal and Bonner too.

It's not a matter of risquing a injury, it's more about having a real break before the last run...

+ The team would benefit from Tony being "frustrated" by the lack of respect and wanting to shut their mouths...

forget it man.. i hate how i have to explain everyting literally on here but you basically elaborated on what i was trying to say earlier..

it's not like im saying TP is at severe risk of a high ankle sprain because of an allstar game.. i'm just at risk of the same thing walking down the stairs of my house.. what im saying is.. there are 82 games a season.. it starts to get grueling and if you can get a good 3 - 4 days of rest.. it's more beneficial IMO.. it's not as if he laces up his nike's and heads over to the gym, sweats a bit.. then calls it a night..

He deserves to go as an all-star, not the skills challenge. I would rather that he get some rest over the weekend, and build up a lot frustration about not being picked for the ASG. He will be a Terror for the rest of the reason with that chip on his shoulder.
While I am sure he would be glad to sit behind Tim and Manu at the game and bust their balls, I am sure he would rather be playing. Given all the Celtics in the ASG, it seems Tony would have made it too.

Brutalis

I wonder how he feels personally about Timmy and Manu being All Stars and he isn't. Knowing good and well without TP9 we are not 46-9 by a long shot.

Pauleta14

I really hope he doesn't make it...

1- He's not good at it
2- His rest would benefit the team

The NBA announced Thursday night that Derrick Rose, John Wall, Stephen Curry, and Russell Westbrook have been voted in to join Chris Paul in the Taco-Bell Skills Competition on NBA All-Star Weekend Saturday Night. The crew represents a young field of challengers, with Curry the oldest at 22 (by only about a few months over Rose and Westbrook, also 22), and Wall the youngest at 20.
