View Full Version : What are some good horror movies from the 80's and 90's?

I don't really like horror movies from the 00's, I'm tired of all that CGI crap, I don't really like any horror movies from the 2000's except Dawn of the Dead and maybe like 3 more films... I know the 70s has some good films but usually the picture quality isn't too good when I download the torrent, although I'm 20 I really love 80's horror movies since I grew up watching them as a child (my friend's dad had a HUGE collection).

Here are some films I like, hopefully ya'll can recommend some films that'd match my interest:

-Jacob's Ladder
-House (1986)
-Silver Bullet
-Freddy Kreuger (don't know how to spell it)
-The Jason movies
-Texas Chainsaw massacre
-It
-The Exorcist
-Pretty much any zombie movie
-Poltergeist
-From Dusk til dawn
-Tremors part 1

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

-Thanks.

Would be easier to recommend stuff if you tell me what you're looking for exactly. For example Slashers, Exploitation, horror comedies, Rape revenge, Torture porn.. etc.

Recommend these for starters:

EVIL DEAD
EVIL DEAD 2
Tourist Trap
Return of the Living Dead
Zombi 2 (Zombie)
Dawn of the Dead (romeros)
Re-Animator
Bad Taste
Demons (Argento)
Dead Alive
The Prowler
The Thing
Madman
Opera (argento)
Suspira (argento)
Tenebre (argento)
Phenomena (argento)
The Beyond
Troll 2 (so bad so good)
Class of Nukem High (If you're into troma films or want to, this is a good place to start)

Fuck it just watch Dario Argento films and you should be set :lol

And of course the Mainstream horror (You've probably already watched these):
Nightmare on elm st.
Friday 13th
Halloween
Hellraiser
Texas Chainsaw
Exorcist

but yeah if you tell me exactly what you're looking for i can make better recommendations.

The Thing

Alien,Aliens

The Shining

The Silver Bullet

:lmao

Gary Busey as the drunken uncle and the kid with the badass wheelchair, right? That movie is cheesy as hell, but as a kid it scared the SHIT out of me. The end where they're in the house and the werewolf is peeking through the window as well as when he's morphing back to human kept me awake so many nights as a kid

the 80s The Thing is my all time favorite horror movie. The obvious choices would be The Shining and Alien (Aliens is pretty much only an action movie)

70's and 80's, When movies were actually scary.

Fright Night
American Werewolf In London
Monster Squad ( not scary, but was funny when i was a kid..."Wolfman's got nards?" :lol)
And a lot of what has already been posted. A Nightmare on Elm Street is way up there, frickin scary when we used to watch that. There isn't any horror anymore. They can call it horror, but it's just trash, period. I don't even waste my time these days with "horror" films.

Ah yes. It was so bad it was good. Once the masks finally worked, the ball got rollin'. Something creepy about that commercial.

The Thing was an awesome flick. I like how the used wolf dogs. Whenever their wild instincts took over it made the dog more creepy. Like someThing was taking over them even though that's in their nature.

Since Lost Boys is one of the best movies ever, whomever suggested that is a man you can trust.

Has no one said Critters or Arachnophobia (I guess that one really isn't a "horror" film, but it's the goods.)

What about Cujo?????? No one remembers watching that and loving it?

Also huge prhaps to whomever said Monster Squad :tu One of my favorite movies of all time.

Silence of the lambs as well...

Ha ha...Critters was awesome. It's hella cheezy, but still great.

I watched Cujo again recently. I had forgotten how intense that was. One of the better book to movie interpretations for Stephen King.

lost boys is one of my favorites for sure.

cant forget predator, either.
the 80s were a win when it came to horror movies. they didnt quite have computer special effects yet, so they relied on badass makeup and effects techniques.

for example, the terminator's smoking head at the end of terminator was created by a crew member blowing smoke from a cigarette.
thats why i love the movie ed wood because it really captures the enthusiasm of horror movie directors (shitty and not shitty) before computers really took over.

I remember I tried to show my friend an image of Cujo on google during my computer class and somehow I accidentally replaced the J with an L so it spelled "Culo" and a bunch of asses popped up lol. I got in trouble :(

It's not from the 80's but I would definitely recommend A Bucket of Blood. Made in 1959 and directed by Roger Corman. Great movie.

A newer movie that was damn good was Murder Party. Definitely worth seeing.

Let the Right One In is a Swedish vampire movie that was unbelievable. The Hollywood remake, Let Me In, wasn't near as good. Let the Right One In is available for instant streaming on Netflix.

I can't stand the horror movies that come out these days. It would be great if I could find a few more gems from the vaults!!
