Manu has been beyond horrible in clutch time..horrible shot selection, that horrible pass attempt to Duncan that led to a turnover..trying to draw the "Kobe, Durant" foul in clutch time, something they will never call in that situation, especially not on Artest..
He gambles on D, which led to Gasol's previous FT attempts..then he gambles on D on the last possession, allowing Kobe to get open and get in position to pass it to Odom for a wide open 3..
Horrible clutch time from him, which is unusual..he needs to make up for it here, make the game winning play..

What a win for the Spurs. I'm not sure if it is blasphemy to the current record is fool's gold. On paper the team does not look as dominant, but the 41-8 record is definitely due to team effort.

Huge win. Dice was having a rough go of things all game; you could see him getting frustrated. Glad to see him get his justice. :tu
Also, big win for the standings. Not only do the Spurs pick up another game on the Lakers, but this at least guarantees no worse than a tie with them, as well. Considering how they've fared against the West's top teams, that should effectively count as two games on the standing board unless the Lakers can pull a stunning turnaround.

What a fucking WIN. Wow. And the thing is, I don't think the Spurs played their best either. The Spurs can play a hell of alot better. Alot of missed open jumpers, too much settling on those jumpers as well. Tim and Manu were MIA most of the night (just like the first game against L.A.) and yet we still come out with a win. Now does that say more about L.A. or more about the Spurs? Or both?

Lakers tripped up by Spurs' tip (http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers-spurs-20110204,0,5772951.story)
San Antonio's Antonio McDyess beats the clock, 89-88, as Lakers fail in another bid to gain a signature victory
The importance of the day became obvious when Jerry Buss showed up for the Lakers' shoot-around, a rare morning appearance for a team owner who always seems to know when to show his cards.
He might have sensed the need to remind everybody that he's watching, and waiting, for his $90-million payroll to pay dividends in a mostly uneven season.
Several hours later, he could be seen in his luxury suite, his chin often perched on his right hand as the scene unfolded below him.
Get the monthly that has L.A. talking. Subscribe to Los Angeles Times Magazine at a special introductory rate.
And what a scene it was, though not the one Buss would have wanted.
The Lakers came back from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit against the San Antonio Spurs, only to lose on a buzzer-beating tip-in by Antonio McDyess, 89-88, Thursday at Staples Center.
Tim Duncan's off-balance jump shot was off the rim, but McDyess slipped in front of Lamar Odom under the basket. The Spurs mobbed him at halfcourt, celebrating perhaps their biggest victory of the season.
Lakers Coach Phil Jackson walked off the court before the referees confirmed via replay that McDyess tipped in the shot with barely one-tenth of a second left.
Odom's three-pointer with a minute left and Pau Gasol's free throws with 22.7 seconds left gave the Lakers an 88-87 lead, but the Spurs had three offensive rebounds in their final possession.
Manu Ginobili was short on a three-point attempt and McDyess was there for a rebound. Tony Parker missed a seven-foot floater and Ron Artest couldn't quite squeeze the rebound, the ball floating out of bounds.
Spurs ball with 4.6 seconds left.
Duncan's miss then led to McDyess' tip.
"Too many opportunities at the end of the game," Jackson said. "Four attempts cost us. It was a good game. Defensively we played well."
Odom took the blame, saying he got caught moving toward Duncan and not boxing out McDyess.
"You lose a game in the final seconds, it hurts a little bit more," he said.
The Spurs (41-8) came into the night with the NBA's best overall and road records, despite Gregg Popovich's posturing beforehand that the Lakers (34-16) were still the best team in the Western Conference.
Kobe Bryant shot poorly, scoring 16 points on five-for-18 shooting. However, he just missed a triple-double, with 10 assists and nine rebounds.
"Not a good shooting night for him," Jackson said. "He'll be better."
Beforehand, Jackson claimed this game to be more important than Sunday's loss to Boston, saying "It's all about your conference and it's about winning your conference."
The Lakers are now 71/2 games behind the Spurs in the West.
Andrew Bynum had 10 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six assists after sitting out Tuesday's game because of a bone bruise in his left knee.
The Lakers trailed going into the fourth quarter, 66-63, unable to get Bryant on track (four-for-13 shooting) or make a three-pointer (one for 10 at the time).
They were quickly down eight in the quarter but steadily moved back into the game.
It wasn't enough, despite an energetic and somewhat erratic game from Ron Artest, who had 13 points and played 41 minutes.
Parker had 21 points. Ginobili had 14 points and eight assists.
The Lakers made only two of 14 three-point attempts (14.3%).
Not the night the Lakers envisioned. Not the night Buss would have visualized either.

Spurs beat Lakers on McDyess’ buzzer-beating tip (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2011020313)
By Greg Beacham
Manu Ginobili had an open 3-pointer. Tony Parker made his teardrop drive through the lane. Tim Duncan finally shot a fadeaway jumper.
The Spurs’ three stars all got their signature shots on San Antonio’s final possession, and all three missed.
Thanks to Antonio McDyess, the Spurs still left this meeting of the conference’s top two teams with another reason to believe they’re the best in the West.
McDyess tipped in Duncan’s missed jumper right before the buzzer, and the Spurs survived the Los Angeles Lakers’ late rally for an 89-88 victory Thursday night.
“We all missed, and Dice saved us,” said Parker, who scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half.
The game featured a full third of the West All-Star team that will take the Staples Center court on Feb. 20, but a veteran journeyman forward’s heads-up play decided the Spurs’ second win over the Lakers this season.
“I was in the right place at the right time, and it bounced right to me,” McDyess said. “I haven’t had too many (buzzer-beaters). I can probably count them on one hand, but this is a big one.”
Richard Jefferson added 18 points for San Antonio in a defense-dominated meeting of two veteran teams hoping for another championship run.
San Antonio nursed a small lead through most of the second half until Lamar Odom’s 3-pointer with 1 minute to play and Pau Gasol’s free throws with 22.7 seconds left put the Lakers ahead.
After Ginobili and Parker missed shots they normally make, San Antonio twice got the ball back. Duncan’s shot after an inbounds play then bounced high off the back rim, but McDyess eluded Odom and Kobe Bryant to tip it home an instant before the buzzer sounded on San Antonio’s 12th win in 14 games.
“It bounced off, kind of like slow motion, and I was able to get my hand up,” said McDyess, who finished with eight points and eight rebounds— including six offensive boards.
Los Angeles held the Spurs scoreless in the final 1:53—until McDyess’ improbable tip set off a joyous on-court celebration. Duncan and McDyess both were stunned when Duncan’s fadeaway jumper missed.
“It felt really good on the release, and it was on line,” said Duncan, who scored eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. “That’s a bunch of emotions in like a second and a half.”
Gasol scored 19 points after being selected to the All-Star team earlier in the day, and Bryant added 16 points on 5-for-18 shooting along with 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who again came up small in a big game. The two-time defending NBA champions dropped to 1-5 against the four teams above them in the overall standings, including two losses to San Antonio.
“It was an ugly game,” Bryant said. “When you’ve got two good defensive teams, for the most part it’s going to be that way. I think both teams didn’t shoot the ball particularly well. They shot it better in stretches than we did. We gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game, but they just got a great bounce. It bounced right to him.”
Odom scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for the Lakers, who lost three of four on their final homestand before the All-Star break, including last Sunday’s blowout loss to East-leading Boston. Los Angeles has lost eight home games already—one more than the Lakers lost during the entire 2009-10 regular season.
“Mental toll? Not much,” Bryant said. “I think it builds mental toughness.”
All-Stars abounded at Staples Center: Bryant, the fans’ leading vote-getter, was joined by Gasol, Duncan and Ginobili when the West reserves were selected earlier Thursday. Parker was left off the team, even though Duncan, the 13-time All-Star, thinks the French point guard deserves a spot more than Duncan.
“Tony was great,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He kept us together like he has all year long, and just did a fantastic job.”
Despite the Spurs’ steady success and the Lakers’ recent struggles, Popovich claimed before the game that Los Angeles is the best team in the West. Popovich credits the Spurs’ superior record to the fewest injuries for any contending team.
Andrew Bynum had 10 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six assists in his return to the Lakers’ starting lineup after missing one game with a bone bruise in his knee.
But the Lakers had a downbeat ending to their final home date before a seven-game road trip leading up to All-Star weekend at Staples Center, which will be occupied by the Grammy Awards next week.
“It feels a lot better to have a chance to win the game than to lose by 10-plus points,” Gasol said. “It’s tough when you’re struggling. We’re hitting the road, and we’ll have an opportunity to get it together and get back on the right track.”
Notes: The Spurs made the second of nine stops on their annual rodeo road trip. … San Antonio’s Gary Neal beat the first-quarter buzzer with an acrobatic, quick-release 15-footer from the baseline after grabbing a loose ball. … Fans near courtside included Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Lawrence, Jonah Hill, director Guillermo del Toro and Andy Garcia.

Notes on a scorecard: Having a vet helps sometimes in dire straits (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2011/02/04/notes-on-a-scorecard-having-a-veteran-around-helps-out-sometimes-in-dire-situations/)
Tim Griffin
...Despite fears that Popovich might be using him too much during Matt Bonner’s injury, McDyess came up with a big performance with eight points, eight rebounds and five assists. The steady veteran produced six points, three rebounds and an assist as he logged nearly nine minutes in the fourth quarter. McDyess finished playing 29:36, his second-longest playing stint of the season.
McDyess has notched two of his four longest playing outings of the season in the Spurs’ last two games. And his six offensive rebounds matched his single-game high with the Spurs — with his final one being the biggest offensive rebound of the Spurs’ season to this point.

Antonio McDyess’ game winning tip-in marks only the third time ever in an NBA regular season that Gregg Popovich has cracked a smile. The first was in 2003 when Pop got a “buy six bottles of wine, get 10 percent off” deal at the Pearl Specialty Spirits store in Portland, and the second was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2LRDO4jiBo).
