Here's a good write-up from the boys over at Recruitocosm. It's a solid breakdown of which prospects they expect to get offered scholarships during Junior Days.

OT Kyle Marrs of San Antonio Brandeis committed to Oklahoma last night (as we expected). He is the first commitment of OU's 2012 class.

Malcolm Brown and Tim Cole are two of the targets by UT who have stated they'll be at Junior day, but some think Aggie has set up a pipeline to their school Brenham by taking their teammate Alexander in the '11 class and getting commitments from Brenham players Troy Green and Adrian Bellard. A poster on 247 from Brenham was saying Brown and Cole are more friends with each other than they are with the others, so it's possible they'd both attend UT if Mack and Co. persuade them.

According to Gigem247 Brown and Cole want to commit early:

"Unlike Alexander, both Brown and Cole want to end the recruiting process fairly quickly.
“We have been talking about it and it’s looking like right around March when we will announce,” Brown said."

I agree, Whisky. I'm of the opinion that DT Malcom Brown and LB Tim Cole won't commit to Texas A&M because their friends did. I do think that will heavily influence their decision, but the difference is Brown and Cole are much more highly sought after prospects than their buddies OL Adrian Bellard and ATH Troy Green. If they ultimately give their pledge to the Aggies, it will be because that's where they want to go and because Texas A&M has done an excellent job of recruiting them all throughout high school. Texas is definitely playing catch-up with those two right now and I'm not expecting them to be Longhorns. I'll leave myself the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised when/if it happens. It's very possible that those guys don't even make it to Junior Days this weekend because they'll have already made up their minds in favor of the Aggies. I think Texas' greatest chance right now is the fact that Cole does have strong feelings for the Longhorns. We can only hope that the Brenham duo makes it to Austin this weekend and Texas gets a major momentum swing in their favor once these guys have the opportunity to sit in Mack Brown's office and get their official scholarship offers. That one moment has changed the opinions of a lot of recruits in the past, so maybe it'll work out. I'd be feeling pretty good right now if I were an Aggie, though.

Here's a name to familiarize yourself with. The UT staff has been evaluating him as a TE/DE for a while now. He may get a serious look if guys like DE Mario Edwards and DT Malcom Brown don't work out.

As you can imagine, the UT staff has been working feverishly on evaluations for the 2012 class since National Signing Day ended. Manny Diaz, Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite have been working with their position coaches in order to decide which prospects will receive offers at Junior Days and which ones will need more of an evaluation period before an official offer is extended. Below is the latest list (as of this morning) of which prospects will be in Austin for the upcoming Junior Days. Some guys have been added and others have dropped off. It will continue to change and it's possible that we see three or four more guys added to the list for this weekend. Stay close...it's going to be a fun week!

Quick update on S LaDarrell McNeil...he says it's possible he may not make it to Austin on Sunday simply because of a lack of transportation. As of right now, he has plans on going to Forth Worth for the TCU Junior Day on Saturday and then he'll head to Austin after that. I'll keep him on the list until I read something more concrete.

My opinions are below based on what I know:

QB, Matt Davis, Klein Forest-
Silky dual-threat QB out of the Houston area. He's a much better runner than he is a passer. Texas had a lot of contact with him over the summer but that fizzled after he tore his ACL in the first game of his junior season. Texas didn't have the opportunity to evaluate his progress as a passer because of it. He'd probably have even more offers it weren't for his injury. UT may offer him eventually as an ATH. I've read lately that Davis has Auburn high on his list (if not at the top). He was supposedly very happy about Auburn winning the MNC. Four-star.

RB, Russell Hansbrough, Arlington Bowie-
I don't know much about him at all and have only recently seen his name pop up in articles. I know ESPN has him listed as a potential DB. He must be legit if SEC schools are already after him. I'll post any info I find on him in the future.

RB, Trey Williams, Spring DeKaney-
Arguably the best RB in Texas. He's a Darren Sproles type at 5'8"/175. Some think he's better than Johnathan Gray who's won two state titles in a row (rushed for 8 TDs in the final this year) and could possibly be Rivals' #1 RB for 2012. He had one of the best seasons a Houston RB has ever had with 2,200+ yards on the ground. He's always favored Texas (and some think he could commit to the Horns this weekend), but I've read that he's not too keen on sharing a backfield with Gray who Texas is also after. Texas wants them both after missing on Aaron Green in 2010. I believe Auburn is high on his list if things don't work out with UT. He's also friends with Matt Davis. High four-star, potential five-star.

WR, Thomas Johnson, Dallas Skyline-
Playmaking WR from a high school that consistently cranks out D1 prospects. He's good for making lots of yards after the catch. Already has offers from all over the country. He and Cayleb Jones will both be highly regarded in the national picture. I honestly don't see Auburn in this race as I think it comes down to Texas and Oklahoma. He's another guy that could potentially commit to UT this weekend (even though I think he takes a little more time). Four-star.

WR, Cayleb Jones, Austin High-
Super stud in UT's backyard and he's as smooth as it gets. The list of juniors that I posted has him ranked as the #3 WR in Texas, but I think he's the best overall. He's not overly tall, but he's long and will catch anything thrown in his area. He's not as fast as Johnson but can make up for it with his long strides. He's the cousin of current Auburn WR Emory Blake. There were rumors there for a while that he was heavily considering Auburn because of the high turnover on the UT staff and lack of contact, but those rumors (to my knowledge) have been put to bed. I've always thought he'd be the first commitment of UT's 2012 class and I do expect him to be a Longhorn after this weekend or shortly thereafter. UT has seemingly been recruiting him since birth and I don't see it ending up any differently than him suiting up in burnt orange. High four-star.

DE, Mario Edwards, Denton Ryan-
He's the son of former Florida State and Dallas Cowboys CB Mario Edwards, Sr. He may end up being the #1 DE in the 2012 class. This one will come down to Texas and Florida State. The Seminoles have a HUGE lead right now with the departure of Will Muschamp from Texas and the fact that his father went to FSU. UT has a lot of catching up to do on this one. With that said, I think they're a distant second and he seems FSU bound at this time. The only SEC school I could see getting involved is Florida because of Muschamp. High four-star, potential five-star.

Any truth to the rumor that Jerry Gray could leave for Tennessee?

wtf? That better not be true.

The only truth to this rumor is that Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman tweeted about it this morning. Tennessee Titans LB coach Dave McGinnis is said to be the lead candidate for the DC job. Jerry Gray has been trying to get back to UT for many years and even took a significant paycut when he was hired because Austin is simply where he wants to be. A job opened up and he took it. Rumor has it he even turned down an $100K raise from Pete Carroll to stay with the Seattle Seahawks. I imagine he has aspirations of being UT's defensive coordinator in the future and maybe even the HC. His son just transferred from SMU to UT in order to be closer to his father. I don't see Gray going anywhere as he's currently in his dream situation (according to him).

WR Dominique Wheeler of Crockett has confirmed that he's received an invite for UT's first Junior Day and he will be in Austin this Sunday. The fact that he was pegged as an invite for this first Junior Day means the chances of him receiving an offer are very high. I can see him, Thomas Johnson and Cayleb Jones being offered this weekend as the WRs for the 2012 class. I've added him to the list above.

Whoa! HUGE news tonight...QB Connor Brewer of Scottsdale, Arizona has committed to UT. Nobody knew for sure if he was offered two weeks ago when he was in Austin, but we obviously know now. Commitment #1 is in the books and the class starts with a bang! You can't beat that.

Regarding Matt Davis, these were his quotes about the AU visit:

“It was amazing. It was by far my best college visit,” Davis said. “I love everything about Auburn. The place, the people, the hosts, everything -- it’s just a big family. That’s one thing you can’t fake, is family. It was a great day.

“I got to see some fans, a reverse Tiger Walk. I could definitely see myself walking down there. Seeing the thing with Cam, just the way the fans embrace you over here. It’s amazing.”

Davis, who is from Klein Forest in Houston, Texas, projects as one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks in the class of 2012. He already has approximately 20 offers to his credit but one school stands out above the others.

“I know Auburn is my leader right now, for sure,” he said.

On the RB debate - I hope Texas can sway both Williams and Gray, but it'll be tough. I think they might pull Williams and Gray goes OOS or TCU.

On the WR - Cayleb is a good possession receiver with nice hands and technique, but won't be that guy with break away speed like a Wheeler or possibly Johnson. Wheeler's tape is ridiculously sick with athleticism and instincts with the ball in his hands, but its difficult to tell just how good his hands are. Johnson looks like a sure fire take to me, a kid with that kind of talent who was coached by the same program who just produced a superbly polished receiver in Mike Davis has a chance to make an immediate impact. You definitely offer all three as this is a top heavy WR group in-state and they all have different strengths, but I think Wheeler and Johnson are the two you must have followed by Jones a very close 3rd.

Here's a ton of info on Texas' junior days and some worrisome news on the Jerry Gray front from Hookem247, they made today's update free for everyone to see so I'll post the whole thing:

BobbyBurton5666 posts
-- by Gerry Hamilton, Jeff Howe and Bobby Burton
(We are making this version of "The Latest" free for all to enjoy. Please tell a friend about Hookem.com.)
**
Yesterday, I reported that Tennessee Titans linebacker coach Dave McGinnis was likely the primary target of new Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak for the open defensive coordinator's position. As of late yesterday, that is no longer the case.
Kirk Bohls first reported yesterday that the Titans were interested in Texas defensive backs coach Jerry Gray on Statesman.com.
We're taking that a step further.
Hookem.com has learned that Munchak has approached Gray about the position and Gray is considered the leading candidate.
We do not know if Gray will pursue the position. We are told that the ball is in his court (at least it was as of late yesterday).
Most accounts have Gray as excited and happy to be back at his alma mater, with everything from being back in Austin, to his overall family situation. However, becoming a defensive coordinator in the NFL, not to mention what would likely be a doubling of his salary, has to be somewhat appealing. There is also a level of both comfort and respect with Munchak - Gray worked previously with Munchak in Tennessee.
Will Jerry Gray leave Texas after such a short stay? I can't answer that question, only Jerry Gray can. (Burton)
**
Hookem.com was the first to report the commitment of 2012 pro-style QB Connor Brewer (Scottsdale, Az./Chaparral) to the Longhorns yesterday.
The commitment of Brewer is huge for several reasons.
First, he’s one of the top junior quarterbacks in the country with offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn (offered Monday), UCLA, Texas A&M, Tennessee and many others.
Brewer is also the first quarterback offer and commitment for new co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin.
But it’s arguable that the biggest part of the commitment is its timing.
With one of the nation's top junior quarterbacks in the fold, it gives Texas much-needed momentum heading into the key February 13 junior day.
With Brewer committed, Texas will have the ability to sell receivers Thomas Johnson, Dominique Wheeler and Cayleb Jones, along with running backs Johnathan Gray and Trey Williams, on having a big-time signal caller in the class, a trigger man for the Harsin-Applwehite offense and the fact that Texas is still the place to be for big time football players despite last seasons struggles.
Brewer is a big get for the Longhorns and the timing couldn't have been better. (Hamilton)
**
We spoke to San Antonio Sam Houston defensive end Javonte Magee yesterday. Magee said he'd like to make it to Texas for Sunday's junior day, but he doesn't know if he'll be able to make it. The visit hinges on possible transportation for Magee to and from the event.
Magee is extremely likely to pick up a Texas offer if he makes it to campus on Sunday. Texas, Baylor and Texas A&M are among Magee's top schools.
Magee said there haven't been many new developments in his recruitment other than the fact that he continues to receive "too much mail". LSU, his childhood favorite, and Miami have started sending more correspondence of late. (Howe)
**
Hookem.com was the first to report yesterday that Crockett wide receiver Dominique Wheeler will be attending junior day at Texas Sunday.
Wheeler has already attended junior days at Texas A&M and TCU. Between the Horned Frogs and Aggies, TCU is the leader.
However, Texas is in a very good position with Wheeler entering the weekend. (Hamilton)
**
Another skill position prospect who has popped up on the Texas radar is Copperas Cove's Orlando Thomas. Texas checked on Thomas last spring initially and Copperas Cove coaches say the Longhorns were back again in January.
There's been no word yet on a junior day invite for Thomas to Texas. But Cove coaches say the Longhorns have expressed interest.
Thomas camped at Texas last summer. He is being looked at as a possible take as a slot receiver/defensive back. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder played quarterback for the Bulldawgs as a junior after playing receiver as a sophomore.
Thomas runs a legit 4.4-second 40-yard dash. His combination of speed, size and athleticism are what have the Horns interested.
Thomas picked up a verbal offer from Texas A&M in the fall. (Howe)
**
We're aware of the reports that Dallas A. Maceo Smith safety LaDarrell McNeil will be in Austin this weekend.
However, per a source at Smith that we spoke with yesterday, we are told that McNeil will visit TCU Saturday and that while he has an invite to Texas' junior day for Sunday and the source told Hookem.com that McNeil (6-1, 186) he is unsure if he will be able to attend.
We'll continue to monitor the situation - this could be a "gameday" decision by McNeil.
Whether he is able to visit or not, one thing has remained clear through the process. McNeil hasn't wavered on his feelings towards Texas and he has the Longhorns among his top schools, along with Alabama and TCU. (Howe)
**
Austin High wide receiver Cayleb Jones will be at Texas' junior day this weekend. Will Jones commit to Texas if offered?
“I don't have a timetable,” Jones said. “I used to think I knew when I wanted to decide, but now I just don't know. I'm just taking things day by day.”
Jones (6-3, 192) said he's looking forward to meeting with the new hires on the Texas staff. Texas is one of only four schools Jones has unofficially visited to this point in the process with the others being Texas A&M, Miami and North Carolina. (Howe)
**
As we reported yesterday, Hookem.com spoke with DeSoto head coach Claude Mathis and his star offensive lineman Curtis Riser will be at Texas Sunday. Riser (6-4, 285) is considered a lock for an offer and a possible commitment heading into the weekend. LSU is the primary competitor for Riser.
DeSoto defensive end Michael Richardson (6-3, 220) and cornerback Bryson Echols (5-10, 175) are both candidates for junior day invites for Feb. 26. Richardson has offers from Notre Dame and Oklahoma among others and is already full qualified academically. Echols sports a 3.9 GPA and is starting to see his stock rise.
Texas assistant coaches Bruce Chambers and Stacy Searels and head coach Mack Brown were all by DeSoto in January and there's a feeling that Texas will evaluate Richardson and Echols closely. (Howe)
**

Hookem.com texted or spoke with several 2012 offensive linemen yesterday, including:
OT D.J. Humphries (Charlotte, NC/Mallard)
OT Trey Kennan (Argyle, Tx.)
OT Simon Goines (Keller, Tx./Central)
G/C John Michael McGee (Texarkana, Tx./Texas High)
G Mac Long (Edna, Tx.)
C/DT Joey Hunt (El Campo, Tx.)
As of late Monday night, none of the six had received February 13 junior day invites.
Humphries hasn’t spoken with Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels since he was verbally offered, but is receiving mail. (Hamilton)
**
Spring Dekaney running back Trey Williams confirmed to Hookem.com via text that he still plans to be at Texas junior day February 13. He lists a top six of Texas A&M, Texas, Auburn, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. (Hamilton)
**
Look for more junior day updates throughout the day today and the remainder of the week.

You're welcome. I think Auburn's biggest task this year will be maintaining that shine that's on their star right now. There's no doubting they're the "it" program and were able to cherry-pick whichever recruits they wanted before National Signing Day. Things can change quickly and they'll have to do their best to avoid that championship hangover that lots of teams go through. It will be interesting to see how they perform next season with the loss of several significant players. As of right now, I think they're sitting pretty with guys like Matt Davis.

Here are some cool quotes from QB Connor Brewer after committing to Texas last night. Bryan Harsin officially offered him over the phone on Sunday prior to the Super Bowl and Brewer called the UT staff the next day to commit. He will hopefully be a catalyst in putting together another great class in 2012. It's always a plus for recruits to see the foundation of a class start off with a blue-chip QB.

"Those are all great programs. But then you get that gut feeling that this is the right place for me, this is the place that I want to spend the next four or five years of my life," Brewer said. "It's good quality people, we really like the integrity and character that coach Brown instills in his players. It was just a great opportunity."

"He really hit it off with coach Brown and coach Harsin," Mr. Brewer said. "He'll really fit in with coach Harsin's offense. I think a lot of things that are Connor's strengths will fit in there. The type of offense Harsin runs was a big factor."

"My mind was pretty much made up. I had a meeting with my head coach and my parents today," Brewer said. "We pretty much came to consensus that this is the place for me. I don't want to be anywhere else. Playing for coach Brown and coach Harsin is going to be an honor."

"It was definitely the atmosphere that the coaches brought to me and showed me. That made it an easy decision for me," Brewer said. "I couldn't think of one bad thing, one place I'd rather go than Texas. I love the coaches and academic and sports wise, I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather go."

"It is absolutely an honor (to be the first commitment). Like coach Brown kind of told Connor, 'We want you to be the leader of this recruiting class. We think you're a great way to start the recruiting class out. We'd like you to be the first one and be very active in helping recruit other people.'"

"I'm a Texan now and I'm a Longhorn," Brewer said. "That's the only school I'm looking at. I'm done with recruiting. I'm going on to try to win my third straight title and continue to do the things that helped me get to this point. I'll try to be the best quarterback I can be.

"It's a big honor to come play for Texas, especially being an out of state kid. I'm just going to be focusing now on my season, try to get some people to play with me over at Texas and try to make this the best recruiting class I can."

Agreed, that is indeed the challenge. But people already forget that Auburn had a top 5 class (including the top OL class) prior to last year, before the crystal trophy and after a terrible final season under Tubbs. Chizik and his staff had already proven they can recruit. I think the last question that has to be answered is can Auburn become the kind of program that can recruit anywhere and everywhere? Only sustained success can bring that about, and next year is going to be rough, at least on paper.

Over next 2 weeks, Texas gets:
Paul Boyette
Thomas Johnson
Curtis Riser (could be LSU, but think he will commit to Texas)
Alex De La Torre
Kendall Sanders
LaDarrell Mcneil

Probable but not for sure :
Cayleb Jones (Texas or SEC, feels slighted by Texas, but think he still will commit once he gets that offer)
Javonte Mcgee
Jonathan Gray (may wait, but eventually think he will end up at Texas)
Dominique Wheeler (think he commits if he get a Texas offer, likes TCU though too)

Would be surprised to see much more than that, I think we will still be in good shape after these two weekend of Texas commits.

@ Designated T-

I'd say that's a pretty good breakdown of UT's expectations. I think this year's class will differ simply based on timing. Not only is UT behind in evaluations because of the high turnover on the staff, but I also believe Mack Brown wants to tweek his philosophy a little bit. You keep offering the "no-brainers" early but hold off on other recruits at least until you can evaluate them in the spring. There's basically no need to offer a prospect unless you're entirely sure what he brings to the table (especially if you know he wants to go to Texas and you can slow-play him while evaluating other players).

A good example of Texas not doing that was offering OL Taylor Doyle of Lake Travis on the Friday night before the first Junior Day last year. Don't get me wrong...although not highly ranked, he's a solid prospect. The only problem was he rolled into Coach Brown's office in a wheelchair because he had a broken leg. Why offer a guy in that situation unless he's a complete badass? Doyle's dream school is Texas and the staff could've afforded to hold back a scholarship offer until they at least saw how he recovered from his injury. Turns out Doyle committed on the spot and it ended up costing UT blue-chip OL Matt Hegarty of Aztec, New Mexico because there wasn't a spot for him.

I think multiple sites saying that Jerry Gray will remain at Texas can count as that third piece of good news. I just don't see him going to Nashville (especially with a lockout looming).

I love Jerry Gray, but he should take the job. I know he wants to be the DC at Texas one day, but fuck it. Probably the only thing holding him back is the fact that his son transferred to UT just to be coached by his dad.

This Jerry Gray thing is coming at a bad time with junior day coming up. Right now I'd guess at odds are 60% he leaves based on the fact he hasn't said one word in a few days since this came into the open. He's seriously considering it, and the longer you consider the more enticing those dollar signs and prestige become.

Here's the way I've interpreted what's going on. Mack Brown apparently has been out of town since the beginning of the week and was scheduled to be back in Austin today. The lack of denial from Bellmont could be due to a couple of different scenarios:

a.) Brown hasn't been in town to address the issue...not a lot is said or done without his permission
b.) Brown and Gray are now discussing what it will take to keep Gray in Austin...Gray probably wants assurances of future promotions
c.) Brown has asked Gray to not accept the position until he finds his replacement

The fact that Gray is being offered triple his current salary to be the DC for the Tennessee Titans surely has him heavily considering the opportunity. He'd be stupid not to. However, he's already proven that money isn't a top priority (even though it wasn't as much as his current offer) by turning down a significant raise to stay on with the Seattle Seahawks. He's mentioned over and over that his heart is at UT and he's been trying to get back to Austin for years. Would he risk burning a bridge at UT by leaving less than a month after he was hired? One would think that would make it awfully tough for him to seek out another position with UT in the future. This appears to be a situation where his heart is telling him something completely different than his head. I'll admit that I'm not as comfortable with my prediction of Gray staying because this issue has continued to linger longer than I figured it would, but I still believe he'll remain in Austin. He and his wife just purchased a home in Austin so she may say enough is enough when it comes to moving. I do know for sure that this issue will be resolved before the first Junior day arrives.

I read a report tonight that DT Paul Boyette, Jr. of Humble has been re-scheduled for the second Junior Day on February 25th-27th. There was no mention as to why but I do find it interesting that this news came down the same day we heard reports of DT Alex Norman of Dallas Bishop Dunne being invited to the first Junior Day. There could be no significance to this change of plans at all, but it makes me wonder where Boyette, Jr. is on the list of priorities at DT. I know for sure that he's not considered to be more important than Malcom Brown or Javonte Magee, so maybe this is a good sign that UT feels good about one of those guys and that they can afford to slow-play Boyette, Jr. a little bit. These Junior Day lists seemingly change by the hour so a lot of questions won't be answered until the weekend when we see who receives offers and who doesn't.

Yep, that's pretty much exactly how I see it. With this thing lingering past today I'm inclined to think he's probably leaving and I really couldn't fault him. I don't think I could turn down an offer of a promotion to work with a guy I've known, worked with, and liked before for almost triple the salary no matter how much I liked my current job.

I saw that report as well. I may be hanging on to false hope, but the encouraging thing is no Longhorn news sources have confirmed that Gray will actually be in Nashville tomorrow. With that said, the chances of him staying with UT after interviewing with the Titans can't be good (especially with the type of money that's at stake). I can't fault Gray for taking an opportunity to be an NFL DC if he chooses to do so, but don't piss on my leg and tell me how happy you are to "come home" and then take off less than a month later. That's a shady move and where I have a problem with this situation. It's not fair to your alma mater, current players and recruits to pull something like that. You know you're a proven commodity in the NFL and will be sought out for future job openings, so don't come back to the college ranks unless you're absolutely sure that's where you want to be. In addition to that, Gray knows about the off-season turmoil UT has had and he'll only contribute to that with his departure. Chances are extremely high that I'll never know what a seven figure salary looks like so I really have no room to talk, but I also think loyalty has it's place. That's my rant.

Yeah at this point it could be anything. Normally I'd be pissed as hell if a coach pulled what Gray would do if he leaves, but in this situation I could understand. Gray has been kicking ass as a DB coach for a while and never got another sniff as a DC. Then when he came home all of a sudden the most tenured NFL coach gets fired and Gray's former teammate, coaching friend from his Tenn days gets the HC job and wants Gray as his DC. No way Gray could forsee that when he took the UT job. I'm a UT alum too, and if I was coaching or working for UT and got an offer for 3x the salary and a promotion elsewhere I'd be gone too. It would feel bad to leave, but you have to take that chance if you have any aspiration of being a HC.

Thanks for that WD

The ACL thing makes me nervous, especially for a guy who relies so much on running. Will be interesting to follow his senior season.

Also interesting that Bama has offered him. They trend toward pro-style guys, usually, so Saban & Co must like him enough as a passer

I agree that there's no way he could've known that this specific situation would've arisen the way it did, but he also knows that he's a proven defensive coach in the NFL and offers would be there for him probably on an annual basis. He also knew he was taking a job at UT where he'd be working for a DC in Manny Diaz who can't hold his jock when it comes to significant experience. I think Mack Brown has always feared hiring Gray because of the very situation we're witnessing right now. He's over-qualified. It's all going to depend on what Gray wants for his career path:

a.) Is being an NFL DC my ceiling? Could I ever be a HC in the league?
b.) If so, how hard would it be to get back to UT if I wanted to do so?
c.) If I stay at UT, can I get significant promotions and a legit shot at HC once Brown steps down?

There's still no official word on what's going on. I read a report this morning that Coach Brown was interviewed on 1300 AM The Zone in Austin and he called the Gray rumors "bad reporting." He apparently said Gray was in his office during the early morning hours preparing for Junior Days. Mack's a public relations master...so take it FWIW.

*A couple of Junior Day edits. I wrote last night that DT Paul Boyette, Jr. of Humble has been re-scheduled for second Junior Day on February 25th-27th. DT Zorell Ezell of Humble will also be re-scheduled for that date (which makes sense). Oscar Giles also called DT Anthony Smith of Spring Westfield and told him they'd like him to be at the second Junior Day instead. The recent developments with DT Alex Norman of Dallas Bishop Dunne being invited to the first Junior Day has to be the reason for the change of plans for these three guys.

*DE Devonte Fields of Arlington Martin stated last night that he has received an invite to the first Junior Day and plans to be in Austin this weekend with his mother.

*LB Peter Jinkens of Dallas Skyline picked up his first national offer last night when Will Muschamp and Florida came calling.

Couple of more updates...

*I agree with Whisky that it looks like Jerry Gray is staying. One thing for sure is he hasn't been to Nashville for an interview and that's extremely encouraging. Hopefully we'll continue to get more definitive updates on this situation.

*Brian Perroni of AggieYell.com reported earlier this afternoon that DT Alex Norman of Dallas Bishop Dunne plans on committing to Texas this weekend when/if he's offered. I'm not sure if we're witnessing a change in philosophy when it comes to out-of-state recruiting, but I like what I'm seeing so far for this class. There's no reason a program like Texas shouldn't at least put out feelers to the nation's best. I say swing for the fences with 10 or so out-of-state studs every year and hope to land a couple of them. a.) Why has there still been no definitive statement given to the media from UT and/or Mack Brown shooting this down?

b.) If Gray is leaving, why was he speaking to UT boosters at a Longhorn Foundation luncheon yesterday?

Weird stuff.

This Jerry Gray stuff is just getting odd, by now if he had decided definitely to stay there would have been an announcement to squash any rumors of instability heading into junior day. I'm convinced he still doesn't know what he's going to do.

Good news on the junior day kids, although I'm not sure why they would be offering a borderline guy like De La Torre a day early. I wonder if these little early meetings and offers don't piss off some recruits who are coming on Sunday or on the 23rd a bit.

I know LB Alex De La Torre is one of the members of the 2012 class that the staff has in been touch with the longest. They still feel strongly enough about him to make him a Junior Day offer. I'm a bit indifferent when it comes to him. I think there are at least three guys Texas should be looking at before him, but he's still a solid prospect.

*Looks like RB Johnathan Gray of Aledo will be another recruit that will get to Austin early on Saturday. He'll be coming to town with both his mother and father and they plan on making the UT/Baylor basketball game tomorrow. I'm sure he'll have private meetings with the staff. Some insiders believe there's a good chance he commits this weekend. Talk about starting off the 2012 class with crazy momentum if you get Brewer and Gray right off of the bat.

*The bad news from tonight (other than the Jerry Gray situation) is RB Trey Williams of Spring DeKaney most likely will not be in town this weekend. He came with the excuse of "I mixed up the dates of Junior Days" and now is not sure he'll be able to make it. He could be under the impression that Gray will commit this weekend, he won't receive an offer from UT or possibly both. It reminds me a lot of the situation with RB Herschel Sims of Abilene last year. He saw that Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green were UT's priorities for the 2011 class and he decided to pass on his Junior Day visit. That was pretty much the end of his relationship with UT. Hopefully this won't be Williams' path as well.

Jerry Gray is napalming that ol' bridge. Good luck brah. I'm sure the Mack Brown curse will fuck you too.

The lack of DB prospects at the first Junior Days makes you wonder if that's a reflection of the UT staff knowing for a while that Jerry Gray was leaving. Every position is accounted for except for this one. You obviously don't bring in prospects without them knowing who their position coach is going to be.

Although I have mixed feelings about him deciding to take a much better offer, he was one of the best DB to ever play at Texas, some think the best. Still got love for Jerry, wish no curse on him. Best case scenario he proves himself and gets another chance to come back and makes it right this time.

*RB Trey Williams of Spring DeKaney has re-scheduled for the second Junior Day on the 26th. No word as to why at the moment but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't attend that one either.

*DB Nick Coleman of San Antonio East Central was re-scheduled as of this morning to the second Junior Day on the 26th.

*S Will Hines of Waco High is basically coming along for the ride with OL Michael Starts of Waco La Vega. They've been best friends for many years. I would say OL Ralphael Green's appearance is a similar situation as he'll be coming along with DT Javonte Magee.

*Lots of crazy rumors going around that Texas could have gained two commitments with a possiblity of a third as of this afternoon. Those would be RB Johnathan Gray and LB Alex De La Torre. The third is either DT Alex Norman or WR Cayleb Jones. Nothing has been confirmed obviously, but maybe we'll hear something later tonight after the UT/Baylor basketball game.

I also wanted to say there's a rumor going around about a "suprise visitor" on campus. No word yet if he's a Texas boy or an out-of-state prospect. For those who haven't followed Junior Days before, there always seems to be a handful of guys show up on campus that were never "on the record" about attending. Well, here's the updates I've heard:

First the Bad stuff out of the way - it's being reported by TitanInsider that Gray agreed to terms with the Titans but no official word yet. No word on possible replacements.

The good stuff: Jonathan Gray and his dad were with Major at the basketball game today, where despite Lacedarius Dunn going nuts in the 2nd half UT won. Good sign that the good Grays were hanging with Major for the game.

The surprise visitor: Mario Edwards Jr. Reports are he made an unofficial today and met with Giles. Good sign that we still have a shot with him.

Trey Williams not coming to junior day, probably at all.

I honestly don't know the specific rule on that as you don't see a scenario like this very often. I do know for sure that I feel sorry for the 2011 DBs. Here's a list of candidates to replace Jerry Gray that have ties to Mack, the program, or Diaz:

Tommy Thigpen – Auburn defensive back coach
Willie Mack Garza – Southern Cal defensive back coach
Duane Akina – Arizona defensive back coach
Vance Bedford – Louisville defensive coordinator
Melvin Smith – Mississippi State defensive back coach
Van Malone – Tulsa defensive back coach
Steve Brown - Kentucky defensive coordinator

- Malone would jog to Austin from Tulsa if Coach Brown asked him to. He has experience coaching in the Big 12 (A&M) and an extensive history recruiting the state.
- Bedford calls the plays at Louisville and may be the toughest of this group to pry from his current position.
- Garza is considered a plus-recruiter. Only blemish is that he was charged with DWI in 2003 while an assistant at TCU.
- Malone and Garza played at Texas the same time as Texas assistant coach Oscar Giles.
The other candidates:
- Smith lobbied for the position hard when it was open a month ago, and there is a recent tie with Diaz. He also has experience coaching in the state (at A&M).
- Thigpen played for Mack Brown at North Carolina, has big conference experience and is considered a very good recruiter.
- Brown is a former Houston Oiler who is currently the DC at Kentucky. Brown and Diaz are familiar with one another.
- Could Akina really return to the 40 Acres after a month’s absence? Stranger things have happened. Akina and Mack parted on good terms.

Might as well just cut Brown loose all together and focus on Cole. The fact Cole came means there's a small chance to get him on board without Brown. I wonder if Brown called or just flat no showed. I think he'll be a great player for aggie but that's very disrespectful and immature to just no show. Hopefully that's an indicator that he'll try to rob someone on the street and get arrested for armed robbery after signing his aggie LOI.

Unreal. Never understood why he left in the first place

Apparenty he was offered the Co-DC tag to go with the DB coach by Stoops and he saw that as a way to help himself get to a HC gig with Hawaii. After Akina leaves Stoops, being a Stoops after all, rescended the Co-DC tag and screwed Akina. Akina wanted to come back but Mack had already told Gray the gig was his. Now a month later Gray bolts, Mack talks to Akina, and Akina gets some payback on Stoops. It's like a damn soap opera.

Searels has a good relationship with the Theus family as he recruited John's older brother, Nathan, for Georgia last year (where he eventually signed). It will be a tough task to pull Theus away from that part of the country, but it's a plus that Texas is attempting to develop a relationship early on in the game.

*The out-of-state prospects keep showing up on the radar. Darrell Wyatt has supposedly started to recruit the following player who's most likely to be the #1 overall recruit in the nation. He's known to favor OU, Arkansas and Missouri, but I love the attitude that this new staff is bringing. Don't sell yourself short when there's a long way to go in the recruiting process. It's a bit unclear at this point if a verbal offer is in place.

WR, Dorial Green-Beckham, Hillcrest (Springfield, MO) (6-6, 220)

*A second piece of good news from lunch is the coach of OT Kennedy Estelle was quoted saying today that Texas' lead in his recruitment is "large." Estelle keeps saying he wants to see other schools and isn't in any rush, but this is looking like it could go down before the second Junior Day.

Update on WR Dorial Green-Beckham...I believe this recruitment has been given the green light because Darrell Wyatt and Green-Beckham's father have known each other for a while. It gives Texas a bit of an "in" with this prospect. Factor in Wyatt's reputation of being money as a recruiter and things could potentially get interesting. Here's a quote from Green-Beckham's father (also his high school coach) about a visit to campus in the future:

"We’re going to make a trip down for spring practice and spend a day or two in Austin and see what Texas has to offer" Beckham said.

We'll see if they make it to campus but this staff is certainly more aggressive than what we've seen in a long time here. I think part of it is because most of these new coaches come from programs like KU, Miss St, Georgia, etc. and are used to having to fight tooth and nail down to NSD for every recruit they get. They're going all out, and if we can manage to land another one or two of these OOS guys to go along with wrapping up our top in state guys it'll be a big success as a class.

I'm kind of perplexed that we're targeting kids in SEC country as those tend to have "agreements" in place to certain places such as St. Aquinas in Fla feeding Miami. As corrupt as SEC country recruiting is how donwe expect to lure a kid if we're not throwing around our big $$$? I'm hoping that it's just the coaches going after kids they were already recruiting no matter how slim the chances and not that we're playing the game now.

*Some bad news from this morning...ATH Kendall Sanders of Athens threw a curveball and committed to Oklahoma State. There's no explanation as to why he made a move before attending Texas' Junior Day this weekend, but most think it's because Texas wanted him at DB while other schools were offering him as a WR (the position he truly wants to play). It's a shame because he was a big-time DB prospect for the Horns. I doubt he makes a trip to Austin this weekend seeing as how he's now committed to another school.

*The good news from the weekend was WR Dominique Wheeler of Crockett has all but eliminated Texas A&M from his list of schools. Something happened at the Aggies' Junior Day that apparently rubbed Wheeler the wrong way. I've even seen the situation described as "awkward" and "uncomfortable." He now lists his possible schools in the order of TCU, Texas and Auburn.

*The best news overall is the Brenham duo of DT Malcom Brown and LB Tim Cole did not commit to the Aggies over the weekend. They will both be in Austin this weekend for a camp and then they'll attend the Texas Junior Day afterwards. Now, I still think the Aggies are the favorites for both, but the fact that this will be Cole's third trip to Austin since January 18th can't be ignored. He's been quoted as saying that the first UT Junior Day was his favorite experience thus far in the recruiting process and he's been in Brown's ear about it. I think his heart is all UT right now and all the better for Horns the longer their recruitments play out.

From what I have heard Dominique was upset on how some of the coaches were treating him. A&M had a lot of top studs in attendance and Dominique felt he wasn't the main priority with our coaching staff which turned him off. He also didn't get a 1 on 1 with Sherman which he was looking for and he is the kind of kid who wants the attention and spotlight on him and him only. It came as a surprise because early reports were he was very excited and pleased to be in college station. It's a shame because this kid has enormous potential and can be something special.

Should be interesting to see though... especially if Cole prefers UT and Brown prefers A&M.

I hope our 2012 class is a late bloomer because outside of picking up Brewer right off the bat it's pretty much sucked. Not sure what to make of it but as of 2/21/11 even aggie is kicking our ass on this class. The good news is some reports are stating we are a big leader for Skyline's stud WR Thomas Johnson. That one will help if it plays out, but I'm thinking we'll need some magic with an OOS or two, the Brenham brats showing an about face, or a sudden winfall of recruits like Gray, C. I'll provide a list of attendees for UT's second Junior Day later this week because there are simply too many changes to keep adding and subtracting names. Here are two guys that have been given invitations for this weekend by Stacy Searels:

OL, John Michael McGee, Texarkana Texas (6-4, 255)

OL, Camrhon Hughes, Harker Heights (6-6, 269)
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Camrhon-Hughes-118772

*McGee is being recruited by Texas most likely as a guard or center prospect. He says he's unsure about making the long drive from Texarkana this weekend because of his busy basketball schedule. His high school is right in the middle of playoffs, so his team would have to lose in order to free up time for him to make the trip. Oklahoma is currently leading in his recruitment, but UT could get in the mix if they were to extend an offer.

*Two prospects that will not be making it to Austin this weekend is the duo from Carthage. OL Greg Brantley and S Edward Pope will be attending other Junior Days. Pope was once considered a big-time saftey prospect for the Horns, but the interest from UT has dwindled since he had a knee injury earlier in the fall. In addition to that, he's always favored TCU because he has a brother currently playing for the Horned Frogs. He will be in Fort Worth over the weekend.

*The craziest news of the recruiting year so far has to do with WR Dominique Wheeler of Crockett. As of last night, Texas is no longer recruiting him. Apparently there has been zero contact between the two parties since the first Junior Day two weeks ago. Normally you wouldn't see UT drop a gifted prospect at such an early stage in the recruiting process, so it's probably safe to chalk this one up to factors that have nothing to do with football. Not only are there questions about his grades and the ability to qualify for college, but the rumors are he hasn't come across as being the most favorable personality at the Junior Days he's attended. For example, at the Texas A&M Junior Day, he supposedly showed up late with a handful of relatives and friends who were wearing those ghetto fabulous spray painted t-shirts with Wheeler's picture and name on them. Sounds like something out of a Juvenile or Cash Money music video. In addition to that, Wheeler's mother is rumored to have gotten into an altercation with some members of the A&M staff and the crew ended up leaving early because of it. I guess this is where the words "uncomfortable" and "awkward" came into play. Hopefully our resident Aggies can speak on this as well. He's currently listing TCU, Auburn and LSU as his favorites.

*ATH Kendall Sanders of Athens is changing his tune a bit. As of right now, he's planning on attending the second UT Junior Day this weekend despite being committed to Oklahoma State. The word is he decided to commit early because he knew that UT would be offering him as a DB and not a WR (the position he truly wants to play). That's all good and well, but it makes no sense to commit before at least visiting your "dream school" and listening to their recruiting pitch. Hopefully he follows through with his visit to Austin this weekend and the picture will be a bit more clear. It's obvious that he's having second thoughts or isn't fully committed if he still wants to visit other schools.

*OL John Michael McGee of Texarkana is still undecided about visiting Austin this weekend. Turns out his high school did end up losing their playoff basketball game last night, so he is free from that obligation. He stated that a decision will be made at some point this week after discussing things over with his folks.

*OL Camhron Hughes of Harker Heights has confirmed that he will be in Austin this weekend. With scholarship offers currently out to OL Kennedy Estelle of Pearland Dawson and OL Michael Starts of Waco La Vega, it's difficult to discern whether or not Hughes will be receiving one himself. I do know that his mother was quoted as saying that she'd be very surprised if he didn't commit on the spot if given the opportunity to do so.

*Like Designated T mentioned above, the Brenham duo of DT Malcom Brown and LB Tim Cole will be in College Station on Thursday night for the Texas A&M basketball game. I wouldn't read too much into this as Brenham is only a stone's throw away from College Station and this trip was planned previously based on whether or not they would have a playoff game for basketball. Brenham HS lost in the first round, so they've decided to follow through with the trip. Nothing has changed when it comes to visiting Austin this weekend.

*LB Peter Jinkens of Dallas Skyline still has plans to visit Austin this weekend after not being able to make it to the first UT Junior Day. Texas has had some ground to make up in his recruitment, but Jinkens mentioned that that UT staff (especially Bruce Chambers) has done a great job of keeping in touch as of late and the commitment of his teammate, WR Thomas Johnson, has put Texas in a more positive position. He currently lists his potential schools in the order of Texas A&M, Florida and Texas. However, he said, "if Texas offers me they'll probably be in front." Johnson has apparently been working Jinkens hard and he mentioned that he thought there was a shot that Jinkens could commit to Texas this weekend. Talk about a huge momentum swing in favor of UT if that were to happen.

I'm just happy it's turned into a place where we can all share solid information about our favorite schools, but are able to remain objective at the same time. I appreciate input or suggestions from anyone who has an idea of how to make this an even better thread.

ATH Orlando Thomas of Copperas Cove had a mini press conference this morning at his high school. It didn't last very long and Thomas took the opportunity to further explain his decision to attend UT. A cool story behind his commitment...turns out his father is a native of Baton Rouge, LA and remembers watching Major Applewhite play QB while he was in high school. Mr. Thomas said he's followed Applewhite ever since and his presence at UT was a big reason behind his son's decision. He mentioned he looks forward to watching his son grow under the tutelage of Applewhite. Another thing is Thomas goes by "Duke" and not his given name of "Orlando." His parents have apparently called him that since he was little. I'll refer to him as that from now on.

Matthews clearly has ties to A&M with his brothers Jake and past center Kevin all being apart of the Aggies O-Line.

Also, TFloss have you heard anything on Peter Jinkens? I've heard that many horns think he's leaning the Aggie way but now I'm hearing that he is just waiting for a UT offer to commit. Not sure though.

Other than Cole and Brown, Ladarral Mcneil and Peter Jinkens are way up there for me. Another thing that concerns me is Sherman seems unable to land a top stud RB recruit and a pro-style offense QB, two things that are pivotal to his offensive success.

Damn, my bad. I guess I just miscounted as there isn't anyone on the list that I'm unfamiliar with. Matthews was an A&M lock and nobody disputed that. I wish that family would stop having kids already.

Scroll up and see my first post of the day concerning Jinkens. It's the last tidbit at the bottom of the post. I think UT is coming on strong and might lock him up this weekend. WR Thomas Johnson committing this week has helped the Longhorns' chances big time.

DT Paul Boyette, Jr. of Humble is another prospect that has confirmed he will be in attendance this weekend for UT's second Junior Day. He hasn't been shy about his affection for UT and has even said this week that he'll most likely commit when/if he's offered. I really hope Texas locks him up this weekend as they need defensive linemen in a bad way.

*Rumors swirling that WR Cayleb Jones of Austin High could end his recruitment in favor of the Longhorns in the coming days. He and WR Thomas Johnson of Dallas Skyline supposedly formed a friendship at the first UT Junior Day so I imagine that could factor into his decision. I think it's safe to say Jones was UT bound either way, though.

To me it just looks like Brown favors A&M while Cole favors UT. I know the plan for all these kids is to go to college together but it doesn't always work out that way. I am not totally sold that they are a "package" deal. I could see a scenario where we ultimately get Brown while you guys end up with Cole.

I read this morning that there was a possibility of him skipping UT's second Junior Day in favor of a track meet, but nothing definitive has come out yet. I'd imagine that kind of news will come out tomorrow if he's decided against visiting Austin. As far as I know, everything is still a go.

The good news for UT fans is neither guy committed tonight while in College Station. I'd love it if these guys weren't a package deal, but I still feel they'll go to the same school. FWIW, Gerry Hamilton stated today that he's heard multiple times from folks at Brenham HS that "wherever Cole goes, Brown will follow." However, Hamilton is one guy that doesn't give UT much of a chance with either prospect.

Interesting. I hope that's not the case :lol They both seemed to enjoy themselves at the basketball game tonight though. Students even made signs for the guys and Brown and Cole seemed to think that was neat. From the looks of it, I bet they drag this process out for another month.

*Quick update on LB Peter Jinkens of Dallas Skyline...the word is right now that he no longer has a "committable" offer from Texas A&M. All that means is the Aggies are bascially telling him they're full at the LB position as they anticipate the commitment of LB Tim Cole of Brenham (could end up being a risky move). It's uncertain whether or not he's actually been told this by the A&M staff directly, but I think he sees the writing on the wall and it's another reason why the Longhorns have gained momentum in his recruitment during the past week. He's a domino that I can see falling this weekend in favor of UT.

It's never too early to talk about the next class. Here are some offensive studs to familiarize yourself with for 2013. The first two may play basketball on the next level:

QB, Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright (6-5, 220)

*He's the nephew of former WNBA star, Sheryl Swoopes. He had 2,900+ all-purpose yards as a sophomore.

WR, Derrick Griffin, Rosenberg Terry (6-6, 215)

RB, LaQuintas Wallace, Tyler Lee (5-11, 185)

*Thompson is an Texas A&M legacy and currently favors the Ags. He also just witnessed his teammate, C Mike Matthews, commit to the Aggies yesterday. I'd like to see the Longhorns offer him as a safety prospect this weekend. If they don't, they'll essentially be gift-wrapping him for the Ags. It may not matter either way.

Here's the latest from Recruitocosm with some interesting scenarios to watch over the weekend. Some of the storylines I'm interested in (in no particular order):

http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2011/02/24/texas-junior-day-2-update/

*Does DT Paul Boyette, Jr. of Humble finally get his coveted scholarship offer? Or does UT continue to slow-play him? I think he's probably the most underrated prospect on the board right now as his offer list is nothing to sneeze at. Texas needs big men on the defensive line...and now! Lock him up, Mack.

*ATH Kendall Sanders of Athens is apparently bringing his parents and possibly some other family members along with him to Austin this weekend. He sounds like a kid that's begging for UT (his favorite school) to give him a reason to switch his commitment and prove that he made a premature move. He wants to play WR instead of DB...offer him as an ATH and close the deal.

*DE Caleb Bluiett of Beaumont West Brook has already stated he'll commit to UT when/if he's offered. However, you have a more talented prospect in DE Devonte Fields of Arlington Martin that will be in town as well. Fields was considered to be an OU lean before visiting Norman, but without an offer from the Sooners the Longhorns might be the leader in his recruitment. Do you offer one over the other? Or do you offer both?

*The Brenham boys...that's all I have to say about that.

Some more cool quotes from QB Connor Brewer of Scottsdale, Arizona:

“I can’t wait to meet up with all coaches again, see how spring practice goes, see how coach (Bryan) Harsin is going to coach up the quarterbacks,” Brewer said. “Another big part is the recruits there. It’s going to be a good time for me to tell them why I like Texas so much, why I chose them. Hopefully they can relate to that and maybe we can get a couple of those guys to join us.”

“I talk to Cayleb Jones, Mario Edwards, Orlando Thomas, Kennedy Estelle, Michael Starts, Alex De La Torre … kids I know Texas is very interested in,” Brewer said. “I’m not pressuring them, I’m just talking to them as a kid, just trying to get to know guys I could be playing with in the future.”

“I’m coming in to help Texas any way I can. If they need me to redshirt, that’s what I’ll do,” Brewer said. “If they need me to play, I’m here. I’ll work as hard as I can to progress myself to be the starting quarterback at Texas. I don’t know how long it will take, hopefully sooner rather than later."

“I don’t really care for any other schools and I’m not going to care,” Brewer said. “Texas is where I want to be.”

*Brewer also mentioned that WR Cayleb Jones is the recruit that he speaks with the most. I believe this weekend will be the first time they'll have the opportunity to speak in person. Pretty encouraging development.

Thanks, yavozerb. The Bluiett offer is a bit of a head-scratcher for me. I think he's a kid that UT could've afforded to slow-play a bit. I am encouraged that Oscar Giles is an excellent evaluator of talent and Bluiett plays in one of the toughest districts in the state. He's not a prospect that's hard to evaluate based on a lack of competition. I can't say it enough that Texas is in major need of defensive linemen so I'm cool with the offer despite the fact that UT might've been able to wait a bit longer.

#11 and 12 are in - DT Paul Boyette from Humble and OT Cameron Hughes.

Definitely my two favorite commitments of the day. I was getting worried that Texas was going to mess around with Boyette, Jr. and wait too long to offer him. This guy had SEC teams, Florida State, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and many others hot on his trail. Great to see UT seal the deal. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Boyette, Jr. may be the highest ranked DT in the state when all is said and done mainly because of his measurables. He's big, long and quick. His commitment makes you wonder what the staff's intentions are at DT with two guys already on board at that position.

I like the Camrhon Hughes commitment because Texas needs offensive tackles just like they need defensive tackles. When looking at the recruiting board for offensive lineman, I know UT will recruit OL Kennedy Estelle right down to the very end and they feel very confident about him at the moment. I know they also feel like they've got more than a 50/50 chance with OL Michael Starts of Waco La Vega. If UT locks up those two, I wonder if they'll continue to recruit one or two of the out-of-state studs until National Signing Day as they'll already have four OL prospects for the 2012 class. If a guy like OL Andrus Peat of Tempe, AZ wants to come aboard as well, you simply can't say "no."

Bruce Chambers is the MVP thus far for the UT coaching staff. A good percentage of the class is from the Dallas area. Getting TWO Dallas Skyline kids to commit in February has to be an unprecedented feat. It always seems like recruiting that school is comparable to pulling teeth. You never know what's going to happen and it's always difficult. Keeping pipelines to that school and DeSoto is imperative.

I'm also surprised that this class is already half full. I did expect the staff to be a bit more selective with their offers this year because there's such a significant drop-off in talent after the the top 10 or 15 players. There are a couple of UT commitments so far that will make you say, "huh?" But, with that said, I like the idea of locking up kids at need positions so you can allow more time to go for the big fish or look for the late bloomers. I can see guys like DT Alex Norman or ATH Orlando "Duke" Thomas improving their stock as they year goes on. I do expect the last half of this class to be comprised of more well-known prospects (not to say they haven't locked up some damn good guys so far). It probably won't end up being the #1 or #2 ranked class like we're used to seeing, but I can definitely see a "Top 10" kind of finish in the works. Adding guys like RB Johnathan Gray, WR Cayleb Jones, OL Kennedy Estelle and maybe some out-of-state studs can make this a really solid class.

I haven't seen a damn thing either. I would assume DT Malcom Brown received his offer today. LB Tim Cole was awfully quiet after the first Junior Day as well. Hopefully some info on them will surface in the next couple of days. That March timeline of theirs is quickly approaching.

I saw that, DMX7. I know that dude lives in the weight room and is strong as a bull. I hope Harsin/Applewhite give him a lot of burn this year. He, Malcolm Brown and a little dose of Joe Bergeron sprinkled in could be fun to watch. A three-headed freshman monster.

With Jones and Johnson both on board I'm not sure if the Horns will still continue to pursue Beckham-Green quite as hard as they would otherwise. I've recently heard that Beckham-Green's little brother has been diagnosed with leukemia, so that very unfortunate occurrence will probably keep him close to home, or wherever his family opts for treatment.

On Cole and Malcolm Brown deuce there's still no word, but I'd take the Horns offers to Boyett and Jenkins as an indication of where they think they sit with Brown and Cole. I'm fully expecting those two to commit aggie or at least not commit UT.

Somewhere DMX is poppin' a top. Great way to end the weekend! I'm telling you guys...the rest of this class is going to be filled with blue-chippers (starting with Jones).

Here's a quote from Jones this morning after committing:

"You can tell all the fans I'm going to work on Johnathan (Gray) too," he said with a chuckle.

If anything, I hope this gives the staff the opportunity to pursue WR Dorial Green-Beckham even harder with both of those guys locked up. It's the perfect opportunity for Darrell Wyatt to focus on him now that WR Thomas Johnson and WR Cayleb Jones are on board. I wouldn't choose anyone other than Wyatt to be in charge of that kid's recruitment because he's a rainmaker as a recruiter. Texas has already taken a big step by offering Green-Beckham as they usually don't even take a chance on the out-of-state studs. I have heard the unfortunate news about his brother. I know Green-Beckham's adopted father (also his high school coach) has stated that they won't be taking any spring visits because of the recent diagnosis. We'll have to wait and see how this one develops during the spring and summer.

I did find a little piece of news this morning saying DT Malcom Brown definitely received an offer from Mack Brown and he had a "great time." He and LB Tim Cole were supposed to attend a camp today in Austin but decided to head back to Brenham early. That's all I have for now. We'll know soon enough if those two stick to their March timeline.

Star ratings are frequently meaningless; our coach uses his own rankings and ignores the Rivals rankings.

If star rankings were that important, Texas would have been absolutely dominant last year. How'd that work out for ya?

I think Colt McCoy was only a 3 star. Was he was only an average QB for you guys?

Recruiting under Sherman was definitely worrisome at first but after the start to this 2012 class he definitely is showing he can recruit which is a great sign. Recruiting usually takes into account the season you had a year before, so in that case our 2011 class was based off of our 5-7 season hence why it isn't that good (although it isn't bad) but our 2012 class should be a top 15 class when all said and done.

Very nice pick-up with Cayleb Jones, It was only a matter of time. Darion Monroe out of LA is no joke also and A&M expects another 3 or 4 players to commit from LA, they are really recruiting that area heavily this year.

Isn't UT just one year removed from a national title game? Whatever ranking system they're using seems to be working out fine.

Sherman is proving to be a bad ass recruiter/evaluator of offensive lineman. I'd take their last two oline classes in a second. The question mark for him is skill position and defense where he hasn't been as strong recently.

I'm really liking the shape this offensive class is taking for Texas. They locked up one of the top QBs in the country early and have added possibly the top 2 receivers in Texas, one of the best guard prospects in Riser, and they're still sitting well and in front for Estelle and possibly Starts. Add in one of the best if not the best RBs in the country in Gray and this could be a dynamic offensive class when Texas needed it the most.

I agree. The offensive haul in this class will end up being one of the best in the country (if not the best). You'll be hard-pressed to find another school that has a skill position combo at QB/RB/WR like Brewer, Gray, Jones and Johnson. The defensive side of the ball is where UT is behind in evaluations and recruiting momentum. They may end up having to get creative and seriously pursue out-of-state recruits unless a miracle happens and they manage to snag the Brenham boys.

Interesting development today on the Brenham duo. DT Malcom Brown and LB Tim Cole told an Aggie recruiting site today that they're going to be visiting Oklahoma at the end of the month. Their March timeline looks to be in jeopardy at this point. I don't see Oklahoma being a player in their recruitment and this is just the guys doing their due diligence by seeing other schools before committing. It will be a major coup for UT if they can get these two to Austin for the spring game on April 3rd. The longer this goes on the better for UT, IMO.

UPDATE: Coach Glen West of Brenham HS says he expects Brown and Cole to make a mini spring tour of several campuses that includes Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU and OU. He mentioned that their timeline of a March commitment could be pushed back into April or even May because of it. They have no plans currently to go back to Austin because of their recent visit. We'll see if that holds true with Cole seemingly always finding his way to Austin.

Quick update on RB Johnathan Gray of Aledo...per Mr. Gray, they will have a family meeting on Wednesday night to talk about his recruitment and trim his list of schools. Gray has mentioned that he'd like to make a decision before his senior year, but there is no specific timeline other than that. I imagine he'll wait at least until UT has completed their spring game before committing to a school, but his recruitment is not expected to last as long as Malcolm Brown's did.

Read a rumor that Trey Williams has eliminated Texas and is down to A&M or Auburn, with Tech a distant third.

The general consensus seems to be that Gray is a little better than Williams. I haven't watched either, so how much better is Gray (if you know)?

It's a tough call because they're both ballers. You've got a guy in RB Johnathan Gray who has single-handedly taken his high school team to two straight state championships (they'll probably get a third this upcoming season) and he ran for eight TDs in the final this year to break a state record. We're witnessing a prospect that simply transcends the high school level. RB Trey Williams could statistically go down as as one of the best (if not the best) RBs in the history of the Houston area. He had a 2,200+ yard season this past year in arguably the toughest district in the state.

If we're looking at strictly the high school level, I have to go with Gray simply because it's hard to argue with his production and the accolades he's received. However, I think Williams could very well have the better college career because he has that short stature that allows for RBs to be more durable. Gray has already had two shoulder surgeries before his 18th birthday. I think durability is a big reason why he ends up choosing Texas in the end. He can be a feature back along with RB Malcolm Brown without having to carry a heavy load like he's been asked to do his entire high school career. The favorites for Williams at this time appear to be Auburn, Texas A&M and Texas Tech in no particular order. He's not in Texas' plans and it looks like they parted ways more than a month ago.

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with LB Brian Nance of Euless Trinity. He's one of three LBs that I've wanted Texas to pursue for the 2012 class, but the staff hasn't shown much interest up to this point. I found out today that he has a partial tear of his ACL and he won't be doing anything football related at least until August. Other rumors have said a lack of interest by UT could be due to grade problems or the fact that there is a lack of film on him right now. If things don't work out with LB Tim Cole of Brenham, I'm hoping he gets a serious look when healthy.

In a 247 Sports interview with Kennedy Estelle, possibly the top offensive line prospect in Texas, he named his favorite team as UT with Auburn following 2nd and Aggie 3rd. Apparently coaches from all 3 schools informed his coach that they have him slotted at the top tackle prospect on their recruiting board. He said he'll probably make a decision soon with his family and announce early.

*Kind of a non-update on RB Johnathan Gray...he sat down with this family last night and discussed his list of potential schools. Gray's father said they didn't necessarily eliminate anyone, but the top three schools are Texas, Texas A&M and TCU (in no particular order). Everything is pretty much status quo at this point.

*I read this news a while back, but it was confirmed by a Florida State source earlier this week. DE Mario Edwards of Denton Ryan will be in Tallahassee for Spring Break next week. He's expected to be in town for three or four days. That's obviously not good news for Texas but the UT staff will continue to recruit him until he says "no" or picks Florida State.

*DT Javonte Magee of San Antonio Sam Houston finally voiced where he stands with future schools. In a bit of a surprise, he mentioned that Baylor was his favorite visit so far followed by Texas and Texas A&M. He mentioned he liked Baylor the most specifically because of the small school atmosphere. For those that don't remember, Gary Green is his head coach at San Antonio Sam Houston. Green is a former Baylor defensive back. Rumors have gone around for a while now that Green is not a fan of the Texas program, but DT Quincy Russell committed to Texas last year so it's all a matter of opinion. This recruitment will probably last a while and things could change if LSU ever comes into the picture. Magee is a Louisiana native and came to Texas with his family after Hurricane Katrina.

More RB Johnathan Gray news and probably the most interesting development so far. RB LaDarius Anthony of Kilgore has decommitted from Baylor and switched to TCU. I'd say this bodes well for Texas and makes you wonder if the TCU staff sees the writing on the wall when it comes to Gray. The chances of him landing at Texas have improved a lot thanks to Anthony.

Surprised Gray has eliminated Tech from his list this soon considering he was a Tech legacy and all that. Good news for us. Hopefully we can land 1 out of the 2 (Gray and/or Williams).

It will also be interesting to see if Anthony switching to TCU could effect Grays recruitment there.

A new offer has gone out to TE Griffin Gilbert of Austin Lake Travis (Garrett Gilbert's brother). I can't say I'm jumping for joy over this one, but at least he can catch. He also has an offer from Clemson and he might be seriously considering them as well. Their OC Chad Morris used to be the head coach at Lake Travis and coached Garrett when they first started winning state titles. Griffin may wait to see if Garrett stays at UT through next year before making a decision. The popular opinion out there right now is Garrett would transfer from UT if he's not the starter this upcoming season. He's a junior so he'll need to find a new home quickly.
