...are only the 7th team in NBA history to win at least 43 of their first 51 games.

The other 6 teams were:

1964-1965 Celtics 43-8 thru 51 games
1966-1967 76ers 46-5 thru 51 games
1971-1972 Lakers 44-7 thru 51 games
1982-1983 76ers 44-7 thru 51 games
1995-1996 Bulls 46-5 thru 51 games
1996-1997 Bulls 45-6 thru 51 games

ALL SIX of those teams won the NBA Championship.

I'd say that's a pretty good sign for the Spurs this year, folks. :hat

No, ALL SIX teams that started 43-8 or better won it all.

The Spurs are the SEVENTH team to start 43-8 or better, but the season isn't over yet.

History strongly suggests that the Spurs will win the title this year.

Pop not playing into the record at all.

“Just because we have the best record does not mean we’re the best team in the league. There are still other teams who are better than us. We have to get better defensively to compete with those teams.”

The 2005-2006 Pistons were 42-9 thru 51 games.

He's not stating that he is anyway. It might be counterproductive 'blackboard' material; 'Yeah, we've got this in the bag. They're gonna hang banner 5 tomorrow. Suck it NBA.'

I'm sure Holt has to be happy though, after doubling down with Manu, Tony and RJ. At least we have a chance and are competitive.

Classic jinx thread!

Please please please don't make another thread about how they are one of the top teams to win 44 games through 52 games. Wait until we get 50 wins then make another, it'll mean so much more. Just 7 more games

The only thing that matters in the end is getting 16 wins in the playoffs. :lobt2:

We need to go 21-10 to attain the best record in Spurs history.

Think about, 21-10.

Wow.

It is heady stuff but I also do not think all 6 of those squads had 4-6 other strong teams in the hunt each of those years with a collection of stars that LAL, Boston, Heat, Mavs, Orlando, and Chicago do and or two championship proven squads in the hunt like LAL (2X) or Boston.

I expect that if the Spurs win the championship this year several things will immediately happen:

1) it is all about their lucky health and CERTAINLY not about their 4x proven championship core talent (will be 5 by Duncan), skill, dedication or great coaching.
2) it was due to some combo of teams in the hunt having injuries, bad luck in seeding, bad calls, or some other B.S.
3) if they play the Celtics or Heat the media will cry no matter how strong the ratings about how great the ratings could have been with LAL in there.
4) fans of other teams will rant about the favorable treatment by the referees of the Spurs and bring up conspiracy that Stern was involved.
5) discount the Spurs as a dynasty even though they will have won 5/12 titles with all kinds of BS.

So therefore all I want is the title to shout back at the above regardless of the record!

As far as that historical record when we look back at the season - the Spurs will almost assuredly not win over 65 games - once HCA is ensured through the playoffs then we have to expect Pop goes into shut down mode and plant Tony, Duncan and Manu on the bench and if they lose 2-3 games he will simply not care

One favor when you give this record info = please provide the link or source (basketball-reference.com)?

it's very nice to see the stats of where they rank in history but it's meaningless stuff until the 5th Championship is in the hands of Pop/Holt

What is amazing to me is that the top 8 teams are kicking the sh!t out the other teams in both conferences. There are some gaudy records this year.

When I first read these threads, I feel like we are jinxing the team. But then I think to myself, history isn't something you can just ignore. So I embrace everything this team is accomplishing this season and enjoying the ride. They have the pedigree to do something very special this season.

Man this is the ultimate jinx thread. This team has a long way to go. Against the Celtics we'd get clobbered up front. We need one more piece.
