Probably gonna go with Dell but what you sons say?? What's the top processor out now...I'm out the loop.

My current screen on my Dell is not working....I see the damn screen but very faint...have it connected to my TV now. Wonder how much it would cost to fix my old screen and wtf happened b/w using it last night and today.

Also save all your get a Mac lines....Macs can suck my balls...Iphone is enough apple for me...thanks and God bless

I'd be interested to know too. I'd love a Macbook Pro, but the damn things are so expensive. After paying off my car, I don't have the funds to throw around over a $1000.

But I plan on returning to school in the fall and would like a new laptop. About a 13" screen (I want something portable over large screen size), and as quick as possible.

Also, before you bag on Apple, the reason I'd like a Mac is because my old iBook is still kicking over 6 years later, and doing a pretty good job. But the OS is old and not supported by anything, especially because it doesn't have Intel chips.

And I'm actually interested in seeing Windows 7 for myself as it was the next logical step from Vista aka, making a PC more Mac like.....again (Windows made PCs like Macs when compared to DOS commands).

I'm a lenovo man myself. You can get sick deals if you do some work on google and find the family/friends code. It's not as ridiculous as it used to be, but still good.

Once or twice a year on the Outlet Website they will have refurbed batteries for cheeeeeeaaaaaap. I bought one and it looked/performed like brand new.

That's what's good about Lenovo. They don't add all that 30 day trial BS to the system. Strait system, with a simple maintenance utility added.

I don't know what you mean by no-frills because they have a pretty good range of performance. They are probably more spendy than other brands for the same performance, but worth it in my opinion. Very well built.

I got an HP last fall. It cost me a grand for basically the newest stuff on it as far as processor.

Its light. It does everything. It has a 14 inch screen. It cost me 1005 after all the taxes and I got the two year warranty (cause for me, after two years, I'm done with it)

The only thing that annoyed me was all the fucking crap I had to uninstall on it.

Just bought the woman a Toshiba for 500 bucks over the weekend. Too early to tell on it, but it has good reviews at least.

Oh and fuck dell.

The last two I have gotten have been fucking pieces of shit in the long term. I think I had about 6 motherboards replaced on the fuckers, one CD rom drive, one mouse touch pad, two screens.

I mean I didnt pay anything extra for all that shit if you factor in the warranty thing, but it was a royal pain in the ass first going through tech support for what I knew was the issue, then waiting for the nerd to come out and fix it, while talking about whatever fucking video game he was playing at night.

I'm just turned off of dell for the time being, and they still seem quite heavy, which is somewhat annoying.

I suppose it depends on what you are going to use the laptop for. My laptop is nothing but a toy for me; I don't go to school or run a business, I just pay my bills, email, do some shopping, visit some forums, read periodicals, download music, store pictures and the extent of my gaming is sudoku and mahjong. It would be absurd for me to pay for Mac because, just how much more wonderful can those few applications possibly be? :lol

I've owned a Toshiba and it was great. But when I had to replace it, I was a bit more knowledgeable and did lots of comparing. Using Toshiba as a point of reference, I found that Acer came in $150-200 cheaper comparing models with the exact same features. A big plus was also that the Acer had only 2 worthless pieces of crap to uninstall compared to the Toshiba's 5 or 6. I was happy with Toshiba, but I got the Acer (Aspire 5740-5780 for $499) this time around and so far have been very happy with it.

+1. Bought the wife a Dell laptop 3 years ago and had to replace the keyboard already. Still doesn't work right. Bought a Acer 5532(using now) about a year and a half ago for $297.00 and love it. Never had a problem with it and would recommend it for anyone.

live a little. get the mac.

Technically, I can get the money to buy the Mac. But the money I have left over I'm trying to save until next year. With the income tax I should get next year, plus what I save this year, I'm going to buy a house as I am a single dad.

It's not about living a little, but rather, thinking long term.

The Toshiba Satellite I bought my daughter some months back was right at $1,000 bux. 18.4". Only the i5 processor, but at the time, the second to the fastest graphics processor you could put in a laptop w/1GB separate GDDR3 memory. Her complex 3d images for school render in under 2 minutes.

The graphics processor:

GT 330M; 48 unified pipelines at 575 mhz, 128 bit 1 gig GDDR3, 182 GFLOPS

Asus imo

I'm using an Asus G1 right now. Not the greatest battery life, and a bit on the heavy side but it's a fantastic machine with a fast dual core processor, decent RAM and a 512MB video card. I got it at a pretty good price too. I'd recommend one.

I've tried out almost every brand of laptop out there at some point or another, except for macs. I would recommend Acer, Asus, Sony, and IBM/Lenovo. If you choose to get a Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway, Toshiba or Fujitsu, be sure not to rush into any decisions.

I've got an HP laptop. The only problem is the battery doesn't last for shit and it overheats like crazy. Plus its like 5 years old so I might need to be thinking about changing it some time soon.

You really only need to spend the big bucks if you need the speed and capability of running some serious software. For the everyday e-mail, posting, blogging etc. you don't need to spend that much. The wife got one a compaq for 200 and it does all she needs it for.

if only used as a workshop, i'd suggest a notebook instead of a standard laptop. a notebook just good as any computer/laptop running deez office programs such as word powerpoint etc... if u want a game machine, why not take a look at PS3 or xbox instead?

Suprised no one has asked yet....

What are you planning to use the laptop for?

School?
Gaming?
CAD?
Surfing toy?

Also, post your service tag for your dell. I can check warranty status and, if out of warranty, can check prices for replacement parts.

just an FYI, service tag doesnt provide any personal information, it just lets me know your laptops model and configuration options at the time of purchase as well as warranty status.

There's a chance I might have a similar model laptop at work that has a good screen but something else may be messed up. If thats the case, I have no problem parting it out as it was most likely going to be thrown out anyway. seriously, if you have a similar model from one of the laptops we continually trash out, I will just take off the monitor for you for free. If I have to ship it (assuming I have the same model) you just need to pay shipping fee's. If you are in S.A. I can even install it for you, no charge (only takes like 15 minutes). :toast

I have the A-215 S7416. Got it on sale for $520 after taxes in December of 2008. I think I said three years ago is when I got this but really I guess it's going on 3 years.

The ONLY issue I have had with it was the display driver. I went to toshiba.com, support, downloads, put in my model and got the update and had no issues since.

I found a big sale at office depot online in September - MSI 15.6" i5 550m I believe with win7 and the dedicated GPU mounted to the i5 (only drawback) for $499. Works great, and loads very fast on startup which is awesome. Old HP laptop took forever

Well, that one isn't the 550m GPU, and only 1366 x 768. Shouldn't be that much... That Intel GPU isn't that great, and uses shared memory.
