I didn't even notice it until I took a look at the standings just right now. I don't even think the Mav Krew knew this because they're too busy for their full-scale atack. Props to the Mavs for regaining their bearings after a shitload of injuries. They're on full-scale attack :hat

Could Butler make it,should we get to WCF??
Not saying he would dominate or whatever if he does(we all remember Jameer's return),just asking..

if the team gets to the WCF, that means they likely would have beaten the Lakers, which means they are rolling well. no need to mess with the chemistry at all. but i wouldnt mind him being active, in case someone got hurt, so he can bring some depth, and maybe even a little bit of an emotional boost by getting in the game and hitting a shot or two.

I am very impressed with the Mavs. Looks like they have gotten their shit together. That being said, they still need to make a trade.
Standing pat would be a fatal mistake. They need another wing to replace Butler (Which means they need to deal Caron). Roddy coming back will be huge but they still need to replace CB.

They still need a shooting guard. It's nothing new and has never been addressed. Stevenson is alright but not good enough for a championship.

Dirk is awesome. Seriously, the only thing worth a damn in the Mavs.
If the Mavs end up with a better (or similar) record than the Heat, Dirk would be a much better choice for MVP than Lebron.

02-10-2011, 12:22 PM
They may have won 10 in a row but it is not by much. They constantly start slow, come back, get big leads, let the teams back in and squeek by in the end. They very easily could be 6-4. Dirk's offense is not much but his D is atrocious. He is constantly letting guys sneak behind him for layups. Not blocking out and etc. I know he wasn't much of a defender before but he is either still hurting or disinterested to play defense. Having Dirk and Peja on the court together is not going to work.

Having Dirk and Peja on the court together is not going to work.
of course its only been the Cavs and Kings, but Peja has not been all that bad on defense. he seems to have gotten a hang of the zone very quickly, provides solid help defense, rarely seems to get out of position (he got ate up pretty bad once last night on a pick though) and does a solid job of boxing out on rebounds both in man and zone.
its early, but his defense hasnt been just atrocious or anything like that though. and once he starts getting his stroke back (which he will), the offense and defense both will become FAR more efficient. the spacing he provides is great, and he really knows how to move without the ball and use combos of picks and cuts to get lots of freedom. i think he will actually have a bigger impact on the team than any of us initially expected. his style of offense fits MUCH better than Caron's did with the starting unit. Caron's style fit better off the bench, IMO. He was somewhat of a streaky shooter, while Peja is about as good of a shooter as you can ask for, and suprisingly, a consistent jumpshooter to provide spacing is something that has been missing from the starting lineup for YEARS.

tbh i think he was the perfect fit at SF for the offense. might not be as strong of a defender as Butler, but truth is, with all the length the team now has, plus Chandler (who has gotten better and better as the year has gone on) backing everyone up, i think the defense will be fine, possibly better not due to stronger defense by the players, but due to a more efficient offense putting more pressure on the opponent. peja seems like a better passer than Caron as well. Sometimes Caron would have really boneheaded turnovers.

The two best defenses I've seen so far this season have been Boston and Miami. So Dallas, LA, and SA really don't have to worry about a seeing a really good defensive team unitil one of the above mentioned teams reach the finals.

im trying to figure out who out of denver, utah, portland, or new orleans is supposed to bounce the mavs in the first round. all 4 of them would be lucky to go 6. i think people still think that these teams are strong as they were 2-3 years ago, which they are not remotely close to being strong like that.

I'm not high on Peja at all, never have been, so I don't think he's going to make a difference..
I'm still concerned about the Mavs' lack of a secondary scorer..it reminds me of the Spurs' big man situation..they have a bunch of solid "complimentary scorers" that can have big nights, occasionally(similar to how the Spurs have solid #3/4 big men, but no reliable #2), but still lack the consistent scorer from the perimeter..I'm high on Beaubois, so I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes that guy, but I don't know if I would risk it..
The positive thing for the Mavs is that they only need a #2 scorer, not an all-around player as a #2..

Personally, I think this team is capable of being similar to the Pistons teams from the early-mid 2000s. They didn't really have any truly elite scorers, period, but had a lot of guys who had specific skill-sets that worked in good harmony with each other, leading to them having an offense efficient enough to win, combined with damn good defense. The Mavs arent as good defensively, but are definitely better offensively, but are still built in a similar way, in that they have a number of different pieces and skillsets that fit together on both ends of the court, resulting in mainly a team effort through all phases of the game, as opposed to relying on one or two guys when things get tough. It definitely is capable of working, but I agree that a second reliable scorer would make things a lot easier.
HarlemHeat37
02-10-2011, 05:03 PM
I agree, that's why I don't think they need an all-around #2 guy like Iguodala or whoever, because they have all-around role players that can give them what they need..
I just think they're still too reliant on Dirk..last night, for example, Dirk played one of the worst games I've ever seen him play..they escaped with a W against a bad team, which is obviously a positive, but they needed Barea to go into Kobe mode, which will happen like once a year..if they had another consistent scorer, they could at least survive nights where Dirk doesn't play at a superstar level..every other team has guys that can go off for 20 on any given night, other than Orlando..
Other than that, Dallas has every tool to go far..I still think they can beat the Lakers or Spurs in a 7-game series, but I don't think they have the personnel to win 3 consecutive series' against the Lakers, Spurs and Heat/Celtics, which would be difficult for any team, but even more difficult for a team that will need consistent scoring from either Terry, Barea, Kidd, Marion, etc..

Maybe if they still had Butler i could buy this. The Mavs rely on scrubs like Jason Terry and JJ Barea to score or their offense can't score enough to win. We have seen what how Terry, JJ, Marion and Kidd score in the playoffs. They don't.

It seems like Kevin Martin is a guy that fits your description. I know the Mavs FO really likes him and almost traded for him last year. I don't know his availability now, but I don't the rockets would give him up cheap (especially to a division rival)

Mavs are flat out balling. The fact they are doing this with Dirk and a bunch of number 3 & 4 guys is incredible. Spurs keep winning and can't put them away.
HH is correct. Mavs need a legit #2 offensive option if they are going to go really far. Having said that, there is no way this team gets bounced in the first round.
If things end as they currently are, they will have to play the Lakers in the 2nd (which is really like a conference final) and that is where they will fall short unless they make a trade.
