(CNN) -- After years of anticipation, relatively few people waited in line Thursday morning to buy the new Verizon Wireless iPhone 4, according to anecdotal reports.
Fifteen minutes before the phone went on sale, eight people were in line at Apple's flagship store in New York, according to CNNMoney. Down the street, about a dozen people waited in line at a Verizon Wireless store.
And in Atlanta, Georgia, slightly more than a dozen stood in line outside a Verizon store to get the new phone. One of them, Lena Hill, 22, brought food and blankets at 6:15 a.m., expecting to have to camp out in a line to get the device. There wasn't a line, so Hill just waited in her car.
"It's an iPhone. There's so much hype about it," she said. "You just have to get it."
In San Francisco, there were no shoppers lined up early Thursday at an Apple store downtown, and only a small line at a nearby Verizon store.
By contrast, thousands have lined up for the release of previous Apple products, including the initial launch of the iPhone 4 in June. In the past, many shoppers have even slept outside all night to ensure being among the first to get a new Apple gadget.

verizon or whatever it is, has been behind the 8ball with the iphone4 for about how long since it was release? when you can buy an unlocked version on released overseas last year for around $1000.
the only way i would buy an iphone is if the plans for data are dirt cheap, these carriers are ripping us up of data packages when in asia it cost jackshit to date roam...

All carriers are raping us with dataplans. Some more than others.

To be honest, I think 50 bucks per phone is fairly reasonable. I don't think we really get ripped off here on basic data plans. Where they get you is when you want to do shit like tether I think those fees are bullshit.

Verizon Wireless said Friday that it stopped iPhone pre-orders for existing customers at 8:10pm Eastern on Thursday, ending what it called its "most successful first day sales in the history of the company."
Verizon did not provide exact stats on how many phones it sold, except to say that it had surpassed previous sales records after only two hours.
"In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story," Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless, said in a statement. "It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer - designed to reward them for their loyalty."

There's something that's just extra stupid about people like this.

I think they've sold well looking at the preorder numbers... that said, I don't think anybody with an iPhone on AT&T is switching to VZW with this phone. The no data + call at the same time is pretty weak. I think VZW will do better once they release an LTE iPhone.

Tell me about it. Today I had to check email and stream other data while on the phone with my bank about a fishy loan application. Turns out it was a duplicate application from when I applied for a loan in December. Would have been a pain in the ass to hang up, look for the info, then call back and go through the phone menu to get to the right person again.
I think VZW will do better once they release an LTE iPhone.
By that point, AT&T's 4g network will be up, so for most people there still won't be a huge incentive to switch.
Plus, with AT&T, it's nice to know that even if you drop off the 4G network, you can still call and stream data at the same time. Verizon won't have that option.
