According to an announcement made during Saturday’s Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Silva” broadcast, former title contender Gina Carano will return to Strikeforce in 2011.
The fighter-turned-actor will likely come back this summer, said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker during Saturday’s post-fight press conference.
“I knew in her heart she wanted to fight again,” said Coker. “She will be fighting in the summertime -- in June, most likely.”
An opponent has not been mentioned for Carano’s return.
Carano was last seen in August 2009, competing for Strikeforce’s vacant 145-pound women’s title against Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. Though Carano typically held a distinct striking advantage over her opponents, such was not the case against Santos. The Brazilian muay Thai machine went to work early against Carano, dominating the superstar and earning a TKO stoppage with only one second remaining in the opening round.
Prior to the Cyborg loss, Carano had rattled off seven consecutive victories dating back to her professional MMA debut in 2006. The Xtreme Couture product has finished over half of her career victims by either knockout or submission.
Outside of the cage, the 28-year-old has found a home as an actor, first performing as “Crush” in the reboot of the “American Gladiators” television franchise before transitioning to film. Carano will next be seen on the silver screen in the upcoming Steven Soderbergh picture “Haywire,” scheduled to be released April 22.
