Price range? Type of food? Fancy or Casual?

Price range? I'd say around... 15 bucks a meal?

Not really looking into fancy, going with some family... type of food doesn't really matter.

If there's one thing San Antonio has no shortage of, it's places to eat.

If you want mexican, check out La Hacienda de los Barrios on Redland Road. Good food, good environment.

If you want chinese, Full House Chinese on Thousand Oaks was always a favorite of mine; awesome sesame chicken.

Or if you want to overpay for mediocre food and bad service that is lamely disguised as humor, you can always go to Dick's.

If you like Pizza my wife and I allways enjoy a Pizza from VJ's Pizza. It's a mom and pop place if you want to avoide chains.

Save your money and go over to your neighbor's crib. I'm sure there's more than enough leftover grub on your neighbors beard, chest, and gut to satisfy you. Probably a better selection than Golden Corral too...i'm sure you'll find some cheese doodles, drumsticks, popcorn, etc.

La Fogata is always a great choice. Good atmosphere/margaritas. La Hacienda is also a place with great atmosphere like stated above. Other places that I would recommend would be Aldacos in Stone Oak or El Mirasol on Blanco rd. These are all mexican food places obviously. If you're looking for something else then Sorrentos in Alamo Hts or Fralo's (pizza & italian) and Rudys (bbq) are also good places off of Boerne Stage rd.

Downtown is a different story if that's where you're looking to go.

Normally I'd agree with jack in the crack but the last time I ate there, I got the swine flue later that evening and that was over 2 years ago. I've been scarred since.

Born and raised in SA, but it's been years since I've lived there - only a visitor now.
On a recent visit I was happy to see that Shilo's Deli hasn't changed in years. Awesome home-made root beer and split-pea soup in an old SA ambiance. Awesome.

How about Tower of America? I got a salad and it was 10 dollars I remember. There are also a lot of "hole-in-the-wall" places. A place called Vietnam on Broadway is pretty good and inexpensive. There are pictures of David Robinson having eaten there right when you walk in. I would also recommend some place in the Quarry, like J Alexanders or something.

might have been a crappy choice but I ended up going to Dave and Busters... since it's so close to where I'm staying

I will however use this thread as reference for the next couple of days

Meh, the food isn't really bad from Dave and Busters, just overpriced. But that's to be expected. At least it's entertaining there, especially if you have kids with you.

But yeah, you could have gotten better tasting food for cheaper in that area.

Tried it once. The food tasted like old grease, the place reeked of old grease, the fans looked like they were covered in gray fur, the furniture is falling apart, and the employees don't care to be bothered. But it was definitely cheap :lol

Lulu's is absolutely disgusting. The original Jailhouse Cafe was reasonably good, but after the expansion, divorce, fight over names, locations, splitup, etc. Lulu's is fucking TERRIBLE. The ONLY redeeming feature is that 25,000 calorie 5# cinnamon roll (when they remember to bake it till it is done)

You guys are saying this like it's a bad thing.

While your description are quite accurate the place also has soul, it's unique and has local flare (not to mention dirty cutlery). In short it's a special place - just as special as the Chief of Police special Chicken fried steak, a staple of local gourmet cuisine (that can also be used to test the load carrying capacity of semi trailers). I don't see you two mentioning this!

So there.

In San Antonio I used to stay at this lovely B&B off New Guilbeau road up by the 1604. The atmosphere was homey, the furnishing spotless and the food spectacular. Best of all were the Buffalo Wings soirées when we had buckets of different flavored chicken wings while watching Spurs away games on the large screen TV.

Speaking of Spurs away games they would sometimes have guest chefs come by if the game was over the weekend and cook food for us (mmmm Fried stuffed Jalapenos). Beer was always free and I believe they were the only place in SA with authentic Slovenian pear brandy.

One of the tenant actually cried for days after I left - now that's hospitality!

And you wouldn't believe how cheap this place was.

Ah good times...

If you're ever back in SA and have an irresistable hankering for that pear brandy, I still have the ones you gave me. After what I saw it do to mouse, I opted to leave it in the really pretty bottles as decor on my shelf. I was scurred. :lol :lol

I'll gladly leave those to you but would gladly pay for some more stuffed jalapenos :D

And frankly I'll always like Lulu's although it has more to do with the company I went there with than the restaurant itself.

Ugh, I LOVED the old Jailhouse Cafe. When they moved the awesome hole in the wall to that craptastic hole in the wall they're at now, it was never the same. Though, I never did hear how that all came to be...
