New Radiohead Album, ‘The King of Limbs,’ Will Hit Web on Saturday
By DAVE ITZKOFF

It’s the morning after the Grammy Awards, when the recording industry is still recovering from after-parties, after-after-parties and any pathogenic bacteria it might have picked up from Lady Gaga’s egg, so who would expect there to be any music news before Justin Bieber wakes up?

Radiohead, that’s who. That nonconformist British band opted to wait until immediately after the Grammys (and, in Britain, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards) to announce that its next album, “The King of Limbs,”will be available as a digital download on Saturday before its physical release in May.

But unlike its last album, “In Rainbows,” for which Radiohead allowed online customers to pay what they wished (if they wished to pay anything at all), “The King of Limbs” will not be sold at such flexible prices. On its Web site for the new album, thekingoflimbs.com, the band said that a digital version can be purchased in advance for $9 (for MP3 format) or $14 (for WAV format).

Radiohead is also offering what it calls a “newspaper album” release of “The King of Limbs” (a metaphor that was lost on at least one newspaper employee) which includes two 10-inch vinyl records and a compact disc, as well as “many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-color piece of oxo-degradable plastic to hold it all together.” This release is sold for $48 (for MP3 digital files) or $53 (for WAV), and will be shipped on May 9, the band said.

- I'm very excited.
- I hope there are also plans for a simple CD release.
- Why would you pre-order a digital download?

May 9th is for the extravagant "newspaper album" release, CD comes out on March 29th for the US and March 28th everywhere else, digital download on February 19th.

Just listened to it for the first time. More than any Radiohead album, you can compare it to Thom Yorke's The Eraser. A lot of drums/beats, pretty much an electronic album as opposed to the more guitar-oriented In Rainbows. The last couple of songs are less electronic, though, there's a piano, an acoustic guitar and even a wind section.
On first listen, The King of Limbs didn't blow me away the way its predecessor did, but then again, few albums did.

The upside to them is that they don't use dynamic drivers, so I would imagine there would be far less wear and tear on them. And even aside from that, if you take care of them a pair of headphones will last 10-20 years, perhaps more. Expensive, but a good investment.

What songs you want? I think Daily Mail is an a4p song. I wanted Present Tense, though.

Daily Mail (even if it's an a4p song haha), Big Boots (since the 90s I've wanted it on record), Open the Floodgates, The Present Tense, and Super Collider. I've never seen them live, but after hearing half the new record I'm pretty sure they'll never play Big Boots again. :(

IronMexican
02-18-2011, 03:50 PM
I think Daily Mail will be on the a4p album(if there is one), and the rest(minust big boots, since it's old) might be b-sides. Those are some ridiculous B-sides.

It's sort of like instead of releasing a more accesible album(I'll use the Kid A analogy), they just went out there and released(in some ways) an Amnesiac. Sure, it's not nearly as difficult to get into as Amnesiac, but I look at it like that. Who knows, though. Maybe Radiohead worked with enough material to release another album.

Only half the songs on TKoL(Mouse Dog Bird, Give up Ghost, Lotus Flower, Mr Magpie were heard before the releasing of this album. And the fact that they used a song as old as Magpie gives us hope for Big Boots, Lift. And Nude(Formerly Big Ideas), should give us even more hope for some of the great stuff they did in the late 90's, early 00's. I'd love an album with Fog as well.

A few notes...
1) Fuck those keyboard jockeys on teh internets saying "omg its not groundbreaking enough, Radiohead's just not breaking new ground."
2) I think this album fits best in between Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief. Only Radiohead can pull this stuff off without sounding completely pretentious. The way Johnny Greenwood's guitar touches pop up are awesome, really glad they still sound like a band too. Thom's voice hasn't lost anything.
3) "Bloom" is the shit.
4) I copied this for some speculation: So many rumors…”Yeah there are a lot of clues about a part 2. The concept of the “newspaper album” itself. The fact that they did not release the “album” saturday. The last song is called SEPARATOR and we can hear “If you think it’s over, then you’re wrong”. And the orders from the site are being marked TKOL1.”

Overall, much easier to get into than In Rainbows IMHO.

Edit: There's gotta be a Part 2 released tomorrow or at least in the way Amnesiac got released after Kid A. Too many little details point to it. I hope they follow through, it'd be beyond epic and a game changer.

After 4 listens I love this album. During 1st listen I thought it was rather bland and the songs sounded the same to me. The more I listen to it though, this album is so layered its unbelievable and the percussion here is amazing.

One of my favorite moments is when Magpie kinda drops off and then comes rushing back with vocals and the funky bassline.

Dunno. I really dug In Rainbows, but I just don't love it. It doesn't flow as well as any album not named HTTT or PH.

In Rainbows I can listen to back to back to back to back and never get tired of it.. not one song is bad in that cd, they're all memorable in their own right..

I started with In Rainbows and I still think it's one of the best, not because I started with it.. but because even after listening to Kid A and OK Computer it was up there with them.

It's good, but are you kidding?

Yes. The Brit-Rock songs threw me off and seemed lazy, and I was initially bummed at the finished version of Arpeggi even though Nude, House of Cards, and Videotape were better than I could have imagined.

TKOL is like a really good essay where every paragraph is really well thought out. I dunno, I think it's up there with OK Computer and Kid A. When I was a freshman in high school, someone burned me every Radiohead B-side up until that point and it had so many good songs that I was wondering why they weren't on the record. This album feels like those B-sides, like a discovery and considering how much material Radiohead has, that's amazing IMO. It's also really optimistic I think, it doesn't feel too heavy or like its on auto-pilot - its just the right balance of thoughtfulness and jamming out.

HTTT had too many songs, didn't feel focused and sometimes felt redundant. If it was 9-10 songs, it's an instant classic. Nothing wrong with PH being at the top of someone's list, it's great rock music (Blow Out is a Top 10 track too).

lol my typing.

Anyways, you can only get the Newspaper with a purchase of the album. That's a crock of shit. I'm not buying the same album twice. Radiohead can piss off the next time they release an album. I'm pirating it.

While it is a straight moneygrab, it seems to me a very odd move by Radiohead. Are they capitalizing on the zealous fans' penchant for all things RH? I mean, it would seem to be...but that's just redundant.

I think it's up to the place. And it doesn't have to be an album. I also hear that a lot of the places giving these things away aren't even record stores. Some are newspaper stands. I guess you can buy a stick of gum and be on your way.

I guess if I had o buy something, I'd try to pre-order Burst Apart. If they even let you do that.

The new album sucks pretty badly. I didn't care for "In Rainbows" either.

Kid A, major props on that one, one of the best albums 2000 onward no doubt.

I think it's in a mall.

Stanley was there, too. They should branch out. If Jonny was there, I'd go for sure.

Werd. I got a few friends who will probably make the trek out there to join in the festivities--but I've got work. I wonder who'll show up...

Listening to greatest hits albums.

The Eagle's greatest hits album was the highest selling album ever until Michael Jackson died, spiking up Thriller's sales.

Going to pick up my CD tomorrow after class. I hear there's no booklet, which is something that Radiohead always does well.
