Former NBA star Allen Iverson will not have surgery on a painful calcium mass that developed on his right calf.

Iverson left his Turkish team earlier this month because of the injury.

He visited Dr. James Andrews on Monday in Birmingham, Ala., and learned surgery he feared was necessary was not needed.

Andrews says the calcification is in a precarious spot that pressures the main nerve and artery that runs down Iverson’s leg. Andrews says Iverson will miss at least six to eight weeks.

He says Iverson should be able to resume his career after a prolonged period of rest.

“We anticipate a full recovery and certainly anticipate him being able to resume a normal basketball career after a conservative period of time,” Andrews said in a statement released through Iverson’s manager.

Iverson, the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2001 with Philadelphia, agreed to a $4 million, two-year deal with Besiktas after no NBA team offered him a contract.

Iverson posted on his Twitter feed Monday that he hoped to rejoin Besiktas in time for the playoffs.

“Unfortunately, he did not do himself any good trying to play through his pain and finally had to shut it down and seek further medical attention,” Andrews said.

Migraines.


And I am not mocking him for that. It is a debilitating medical condition. I get them myself. Always felt for him when I heard he had to sit out a game for one.
