I hope this guy is raped in prison until his asshole resembles a train tunnel.

Hopefully the Auburn faithful won't retaliate, it's the last thing this great rivalry needs.

Glad I was able to celebrate some big wins underneath those Oaks, and it breaks my heart that I'll have to watch them slowly die away.

They arrested the guy and a full-scale attempt to save the trees is underway. They are planning on removing and treating the soil in an attempt to stunt and reverse and damage.

Dude should go to jail for a while if convicted. I think I heard upwards of 10 years.

Can't believe the suspect is a 62 year old man. What a idiot. Throw his old ass in jail.

Yeah Jmark, I'm hearing the same thing. Apparently it's going to be a fed thing because the guy used so much of the poison.

Hate that this will add to the perception around the country that Alabama is just a state filled with rednecks and deranged fans. While partly true, it's way overblown.

Heard on the news that this happened in Austin back in 89', and that they were able to save the tree. Any of you know any more?

By the way, this guy who was arrested is a retired trooper from Texas, with a daughter named "Crimson Tide", and a son named "Bear Bryant". Wow, a former State Trooper. Despicable

While I'm not a fan of Auburn I think the act of attempting to destroy those particular trees is a travesty. See the mascots out fit, TP a statute, etc..., but don't ruin a tradition even if the school is a bitter rival.

Like symple said, this is a black eye for all of Alabama. What was arguably the best rivalry in college football (at present) suddenly looks pathetic and deranged.

For Auburn/Alabama fans, this incident is going to be talked about for decades. Best case scenario is that things improve as residents step back and realize that this is just a game. Worst case scenario is that an idiot Auburn fan retaliates and things become worse.

Some effing Ducks fan set part of the turf on fire at Oregon State after the Civil War this year. They put his ass in jail for 2 weeks. Dumbass!

So what do they look like now after being poisoned?

I don't think it was an instantaneous death. Rather a slow, but certain death. I don't think they look dead yet.

Just heard on ESPN that they expect the trees to die within two years.

So, wait, what's the big deal with these trees? Other than the fact that Auburn students seem to enjoy vandalizing them?

They are old, they are iconic (yes, in part through the temporary, harmless vandalism), and they were not his property to destroy.

They are 100 years old and tping the trees is alot different than poisioning them.

I'm sure there are majestic oaks all across Alabama they can replace them with.

It's a gathering point, a coming together after a big win that's been going on since the 60's. I don't really expect others to understand, but it is a beloved tradition at Auburn and unique across the college landscape. Those trees are an icon, irreplaceable from a sentimental standpoint

My guess would be that if they do indeed die, then new ones will be planted instead of other, fully grown trees being brought in.

Thanks. :tu

I grew up in CS, and finally moved away at age 23. I completely get the importance placed on tradition (however unusual).

Huh.

Watched the Toomer's Corner vid. Pretty sad, actually.

I'm sure I'd be irate if someone did something like that to the Century Tree.

Sorry, symp. That sucks.

a fascinating article from ESPN about Updyke, the retard that poisoned the trees.

He convinced his first wife to let him name their first child Bear Bryant Updyke. When it was a girl, they named her Crimson Tyde. Their next child was a boy and, sure enough, his name was Bear. Al's two dogs are named Bama and Nicky. He has 46 Alabama hats. Last year, he found Alabama national championship T-shirts on sale for $3.41. He bought all 18 in stock. When he was 19, he ran onto the field at the Bluebonnet Bowl, carrying a roll of toilet paper and a box of Tide. More recently, he tried to convince his current wife to name a daughter Ally Bama. He begged. Her response was "Are you crazy?" She also refused to promise that she'd honor his request to bury him in crimson. Even before the Toomer's allegations, she thought he took this Alabama thing too far. She told him he better get a tattoo if he wanted to be buried with anything related to a football team.

it's obvious this guy has mental issues, and that's what I found fascinating about the article. How he would go back and forth between personalities. I'm sure the way it was written had something to do with that, but this writer isn't the only one to portray him in this manner
