View Full Version : Nuggets better do this deal

The Denver Nuggets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/den/) and New Jersey Nets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/njn/) are once again in advanced talks on the framework of a blockbuster trade for Carmelo Anthony (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3706/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3706/news). And once again, Anthony must be sold on agreeing to a three-year, $65 million contract extension to push these long, winding negotiations to completion.

The Nets and Nuggets are discussing a deal that would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3174/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3174/news), Melvin Ely (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3610/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3610/news), Renaldo Balkman (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4148/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4148/news) and Shelden Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4133/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4133/news) to the Nets for Derrick Favors (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4718/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4718/news), Devin Harris (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3822/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3822/news), Troy Murphy (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3524/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3524/news), Ben Uzoh (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4792/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4792/news) and four first-round draft picks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday night.
The Nuggets are expected to move Murphy and his $12 million expiring contract to a third team and sweeten the deal with one or two of the Nets’ draft picks.

Now, the pressure could be back on the New York Knicks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/nyk/) to sweeten their offer and get Anthony before the Feb. 24 trade deadline. Knicks president Donnie Walsh has seemed willing to let Anthony go into free agency, when New York can try to sign him in the summer. The Knicks and Nuggets have negotiated steadily in recent weeks, but Denver has been frustrated with New York’s reluctance to part with key young players in a deal.

For the Nets, the next step would be for owner Mikhail Prokhorov to meet Anthony in Los Angeles during All-Star weekend and sell the Nuggets star on a future with the Nets. The New York Daily News reported that Prokhorov and Knicks owner Jim Dolan both have meetings scheduled with Anthony during the weekend.

With the Nets having twice previously thought they were close to completing a deal for Anthony, the Nuggets have been the more aggressive pursuer in this round of talks. Nuggets officials have long preferred New Jersey’s assets to those of New York, but it remains to be seen if Denver – and Anthony – is merely trying to use the Nets as leverage.

Sources said Anthony’s agents didn’t even know until Tuesday or Wednesday that the Nuggets and Nets had restarted talks. The teams resumed negotiations over a week ago when Denver called back the Nets in the aftermath of Prokhorov’s abrupt ending of talks on Jan. 19.
This is still a steep price for the Nets to pay for Anthony, and far more than the Knicks seem willing to give up. Among the draft picks the Nets are expected to give the Nuggets are their own 2011 first-round selection, the 2011 first-round pick they acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/lal/), a future conditional first-rounder from the Golden State Warriors (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/gsw/) and another future first-rounder.

Walsh probably hasn’t given the Nuggets his best offer yet, and has been reluctant to include Danilo Gallinari and Landry Fields in a package. The Daily News reported Denver wanted the Knicks to include point guard Raymond Felton in a bigger package that would send Anthony and Billups to New York.

I wouldn't, but it all depends if Carmelo wants to win, or just have the endorsements. The Knicks can wait, but as of now for Denver, they have to get something 4 him, so it will be interesting to see

i just cant see him signing an extension with NJ.... the nets will suck the rest of this year, and wont be very good next year, and they still wont be in brooklyn. seems like kind of a waste.

amare >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> lopez

and i think NY will have a much better chance to land paul or williams than NJ, especially if melo and amare are already there.

Melo update...

It’s pretty simple from my end. Everything I’ve heard thus far is to say that Melo will not be extending. Unfortunately, our video upload system is dragging so I can’t show you my conversation with Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post (http://twitter.com/#%21/dempseypost) who knows Melo as well as anyone. His words:
Melo won’t extend in New Jersey.
I’ve heard that a few times today. More as the situation develops.

I don't get why they would'n't just talk to Melo first and save everyone a shit ton of trouble.

I mean these assholes are going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, no I want this, no we'll give you that, but I also want this, okay but only if you give us that, well I'll give you that but you'll probably have to also give me this so I can give it to someone else who will also take that and the other thing.

Sound good, yeah sounds good to me, hey Carmelo do you want to play in New Jersey? Fuck no!

Nuggets’ Anthony says Nets meeting is “news to me” (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-all-star-anthony)
By Brian Mahoney

Carmelo Anthony said Friday “no meeting at all” is scheduled with the New Jersey Nets and didn’t know what he would say if one does happen.

Speaking at an NBA Cares community service event, Anthony said a reported meeting that Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov was seeking with the All-Star forward was “news to me.”

“I haven’t heard it,” Anthony said.

Russian billionaire Prokhorov told team executives last month to end drawn-out trade talks for Anthony, a day before they had been scheduled to meet.

“If I was to meet with that guy, to be honest I really don’t know what I would say,” Anthony said.

The Nuggets have looked into trading Anthony since he declined to sign a three-year contract extension worth nearly $65 million this season. The Nets have been close to a deal twice, and the New York Knicks are considered the other favorite to land Anthony if Denver decides to move him by Thursday afternoon.

Prokhorov’s spokeswoman insists nothing has changed with the impending NBA trading deadline, despite multiple reports of a possible meeting and/or deal. Prokhorov cited the high price the Nuggets were seeking and his frustration with the public nature of the talks when he halted them, not because of reports that Anthony only would agree to a long-term extension with the Knicks if he were dealt.

There are also reports that Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan wants to meet with Anthony this weekend. Anthony said there was no meeting scheduled with him, either, but seems to see the value in talking with a team that’s interested in him.

“Whether it’s Prokhorov or Dolan or (Lakers owner Jerry) Buss, the third team that just came out last week, whoever it is, you would want to sit down and have eye contact with him and get a feeling for him,” Anthony said.

Melo is a short sighted fool. The Nets will be better than the Knicks before too long

They have cap space after they sign him and they would be able to land Cp3 or Dwill once they move to Brooklyn in 2012. All Melo has to do is suck it up until the lockout. The nets could also package Lopez and see if they can land another star.

The Knicks blew $100mil on Amare's knees that will last a couple more years playing at that pace. They won't have capspace to sign Cp3 after they add Melo.

cp3/Melo/Lopez >>> Amare/Melo/crap

NuGGeTs-FaN
02-18-2011, 04:20 PM
Melo definately isn't worth that package, but for NJ he is a must for a couple of reasons

1) Moving to Brooklyn and they need a star to sell tickets and to try and pry away waivering Knicks fans

2) Cp3 will go to NJ if Melo signs there, so essentially they are setting up to land 2 superstars

Looks like the Knicks are not done yet.

James Dolan (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/James+Dolan) met with Carmelo Anthony (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Carmelo+Anthony) late Thursday in Los Angeles (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Los+Angeles), The Daily News has learned, in what could be the first step in Anthony being traded to the Knicks (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/New+York+Knicks).
Although the Nets (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/New+Jersey+Nets) and Nuggets have agreed on players that would be included in a proposed blockbuster trade, the Knicks and Nuggets are scheduled to hold a conference call on Friday afternoon, a high ranking Knicks official tells The News.
The four main players on the conference call will be Dolan, the Chairman of Madison Square Garden (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Madison+Square+Garden), as well as Knicks president Donnie Walsh (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Donnie+Walsh). Nuggets (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Denver+Nuggets) owner Stan Kroenke (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Stan+Kroenke) and Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Masai+Ujiri) will also be on the call.
The call indicates that the Knicks are definitely alive in their bid to acquire Anthony and that if both sides can agree on which players to trade a deal can be made.
The hold up is the Knicks reluctance to include Danilo Gallinari (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Danilo+Gallinari) in the trade. The Nuggets want three starters, including Raymond Felton (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Raymond+Felton), a No. 1 pick and Eddy Curry (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Eddy+Curry)'s expiring contract.
The Knicks would get Anthony, Chauncey Billups (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Chauncey+Billups) plus other players to make the deal work under the salary cap guidelines, including Anthony Carter (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Anthony+Carter).
Anthony said Friday that he isn't aware of a meeting with Prokhorov. In all likelihood, Anthony is hoping that the Knicks and Nuggets can agree on a deal before he meets with Nets officials, including Mikhail Prokhorov (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Mikhail+Prokhorov), the team owner, as well as minority owner Jay-Z (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Jay-Z).

Either way, the Nuggets won't get totally screwed. To get gallo/chandler/felton/curry/pick for Melo/CB is better than anything the Knicks really want to give up.

It sounds really bad at first, but their lottery pick isn't going to be anything good and that 1st rounder from LA is going to be a liability in a draft this bad. You're going to see tons of second round talent going in the first this year with the lockout looking inevitable. If you were a good prospect would you dump your scholarship and an extra year of young strange to go work at Burger King when the season gets called off? Now 2012 draft picks would be worth their weight in gold.

I don't even know why they'd want the LA pick, seriously. Late first rounders aren't too attractive in normal years, but in a year when all the talent will probably stay put and all the crap will come out to get that guaranteed 1st round money, it's going to be really slim pickings with that draft choice. I mean, no way the owners are going to give up their 4 year ownership of players out the draft and no way the players could be stupid enough to give up the guaranteed money as the trade-off for it.

The package is a player short of a reported Nuggets offer from last week (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2011/2/17/1998866/carmelo-anthony-trade-knicks), which also included rookie Landry Fields (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/112562/landry-fields).

Anthony to meet with Nets owner (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-anthonynets021911)
By Adrian Wojnarowski

Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony plans to give New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and minority partner Jay-Z a chance to sell him on accepting a three-year, $65 million contract extension on Saturday night, a source confirmed to Yahoo! Sports.

The meeting, first reported by the New York Daily News, has been several months in the making and comes as the New York Knicks and Nuggets have reached a stalemate in trade talks on a deal for Anthony. All along, Denver has preferred a deal with New Jersey that includes rookie forward Derrick Favors and multiple first-round draft picks over New York’s assets.

This has turned into a high-stakes game of leverage and bluffs, with Anthony and Prokhorov – despite numerous denials about a possible meeting – thrusting pressure on New York to keep improving its offer to the Nuggets.

The Nuggets’ star believes he needs to create leverage with the Knicks and keep the Nets as an option should a deal to New Jersey turn out to be the only way for him to get a contract extension and avoid the uncertainty of free agency.

Several Western Conference teams are still trying to get involved with Denver for Anthony – some even willing to take him without the assurance of a contract extension – but as one conference executive told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday: “Denver does not want to send him into the Western Conference.”

The Knicks made a revised offer on Friday that included Danilo Gallinari, Yahoo! Sports reported. The proposed Knicks-Nuggets deal would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams to the Knicks for Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry and a draft pick.

Several league sources believe Knicks owner James Dolan is leaning heavily on the advice of former president and coach Isiah Thomas and undermining the negotiating process for current president Donnie Walsh.

The framework of a Nuggets-Nets trade – as Yahoo! Sports first reported on Thursday night – would include Anthony, Billups, Balkman, Williams and Melvin Ely and for Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four future first-round draft picks. The Nuggets would move Murphy’s $12 million expiring contract and one or two of the Nets’ picks to a third team.

The NBA’s trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET Thursday.

Carmelo Anthony, Nets meet

The long-awaited meeting between Carmelo Anthony and the New Jersey Nets took place late Saturday afternoon at a Los Angeles-area restaurant, according to a league source.

The Nets owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, and minority owner Jay-Z informed Anthony of the club's short-term and long-term vision -- the certainty of their move to Brooklyn for the start of the 2012-13 season, as well as their plans to build a championship-caliber team around him, largely through free agency.

Anthony was noncommittal after hearing the Nets' presentation, not saying whether or not he would sign the three-year, $65 million contract extension that is a prerequisite for the deal. He told the Nets he will think about the situation and would like to have a resolution before the end of the weekend.

The meeting lasted approximately 40 minutes. In addition to Prokhorov and Jay-Z, Nets general manager Billy King and CEO Brett Yormark were also present. Anthony was joined by his agent Leon Rose, as well as his business manager, Bay Frazier.

The New York Daily News first reported the meeting was planned.

The meeting happened despite Prokhorov saying earlier Saturday he had no plans to meet with Anthony. A spokeswoman for the Prokhorov, Elllen Pinchuk, released a statement saying that Prokhorov had not met with Anthony and has no plans to meet with the Denver Nuggets star.

"Just to update you, Mikhail has not met with and has no plans to meet with Carmelo Anthony," Pinchuk said. "He is looking forward to enjoying All Star Weekend. We will have nothing else to add on this."

The Nets and Nuggets recently renewed trade talks for Anthony for the third time this season. However, Anthony, who can became a free agent after this season, insisted twice Friday that no meeting was planned with Prokhorov.

Anthony wouldn't answer when asked about a New York Daily News report that he met with Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan on Thursday.

The Nuggets have looked into trading Anthony since he declined to sign a three-year contract extension worth nearly $65 million this season. The Nets were close to a deal twice, and the New York Knicks are considered the other favorite to land Anthony if Denver decides to move him.

Anthony wants something to happen soon, but hasn't received any indication from Nuggets executive Josh Kroenke that it will.

"I believe that me and Josh have a good relationship. Since he became the owner, we've been talking a lot. The lines of communication have been open," Anthony said. "I do believe that if something was to break or happen, that he would call me or he would sit down with me and explain it."

Either team would have to give up a big portion of its roster to land Anthony.

"If anything was to happen with whatever team, of course, I would want a team to be able to compete with," Anthony said. "As far as all the players that's in the deal, that's supposed to be in the deal, yeah, that's a lot of players for one guy."

The Nuggets approached the Nets in the past week to see if they were still interested in acquiring the small forward, sources told ESPN.com.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets and Nuggets discussed a deal that would have sent point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick in the draft, others and at least three of the Nets' five first-round draft picks over the next two seasons to Denver for Anthony, point guard Chauncey Billups and others.

The Nets were close to a deal for Anthony in training camp and there was a 10-day span in January when the Nets and Nuggets appeared on the verge of pulling off a blockbuster 15- or 16-player, three-team deal with Detroit that would have brought Anthony to New Jersey.

When the deal lingered without resolution, Prokhorov ended the speculation in dramatic fashion, saying the lingering talks were hurting his team. He also cited the high price the Nuggets were seeking and his frustration with the public nature of the talks.

On Thursday, Prokhorov's spokeswoman insisted that Prokhorov had not changed his mind with the impending NBA trading deadline approaching.

Knicks All-Star Amare Stoudemire denied a report that he was against the reported deal for Anthony.

"I don't know where you heard that from. You didn't hear it from me," he said. "It's always a touchy topic because you don't want to offend anyone ... but Carmelo is obviously a friend. He's from New York, New York loves him."http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/news/story?id=6139746
