It's the same on any forum where moderation takes a more liberal approach. The ratio of conversational posters to just shit talkers is surpassing 1:5.

I started seeing this in the mid to late 90's with video game forums and even the games themselves. What started off being pretty damn enjoyable became a shit fest as more and more kids gained access to computers that were once reserved for adults. Now it's an endless flow of tweeners and sock puppets of tweeners multi-accounting their way through their only alternative to facebook or Xbox Live gaming, which is to post the most controversial, acidic or mean-spirited shit they can imagine and watch the responses. When they get caught and kicked out, they just spoof and return. With the games it was trainer using cheating kids who's entire self worth was predicated on the false image they put forth as a "great player" by using covert trainers and cheats. When those were exposed and became well known, the same minds just decided to shit on everything. If they cannot be on top, they want the whole place to be nothing to a shit-fest. Popularity, even for bad reasons, is better than anonymity to many posters.

We all partake in the bullshit at times, some just make a life out of it. Imagine having 5 or more troll accounts and spending all day and night switching between them just to answer your own posts.

What part do you have a problem with? You said you agreed with most of it.

The large majority of posters these days are like the large majority of online gamers: They are there for self indulgence at the expense of the community. In the past it was a community thing where people looked for ways to make the experience better. There was a small outcast group of trouble makers. They were looked down upon and IP banned mostly. There were programs developed that allowed logged in users to kick these ass clowns to the curb, some by vote and some just by moderator.

These days, even in the realm of forums, that minority has become the majority, partly by multiple accounts from one individual, and they are often being hailed as "elite" when in reality they are the grown up version of the same batch of dick cheese that infested the system in the past. These same clowns would ruin a good experience for everyone else just so they could sit back on ICQ (back then) or Roger Wilco and laugh with a couple of grade school pals about how they hacked.

It's no different, just more of them because more kids have access to computers and they are bored with community shit already. Although the tactics and concepts are different, there's very little originality involved any more. You could switch user names on many different posts and no one would know.
