View Full Version : Gerald Wallace traded to Blazers

MiamiHeat

UPDATE 3:51 pm: It is a done deal, Gerald Wallace has been traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. And no, Nicolas Batum is not part of the package headed back to Charlotte. That makes this a win for Portland at first glance.

The deal will send Joel Pryzbilla, cash and other players back to Charlotte. The Bobcats had been working hard to save money and that seems to be what they get out of this deal. Not players that make them better.

UPDATE 3:51 pm: It is a done deal, Gerald Wallace has been traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to a tweet from the well connected Dwight Jaynes.

Portland, with Batum and Wallace at the two and three, could be one of the best defensive teams on the perimeter in the league. What’s kind of sad to think is that if they had the old, explosive Brandon Roy and a functional Greg Oden this team would be a serious playoff threat to the West elite.

3:05 pm: It seems a number of teams love them some Gerald Wallace. Which make sense — he is one of he more unheralded quality small forwards in the league.

Portland is pushing hard to get Gerald Wallace according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo. Cleveland is in the mix, too, but that seems to be stalled out at best, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

I get the Blazers pushing, but what will they give up? Reports are the Bobcats are asking for Nicolas Batum to be part of the deal. The Trail Blazers don’t want to put the young French wing player in any trade. They shouldn’t in this case. Sure, Wallace is the better offensive player but he is also eight years older than Batum and more expensive

That said, there is value if you can get Wallace at he right price (Portland was thinking more like Rudy Fernandez and filler). Wallace, he is a quality three who is strong at both ends of the floor. His shooting numbers are down this season — 15.6 points per game on 43 percent shooting —because he is getting to the rim less often and shooting more from 16 feet out. That may change on a team with other quality offensive options.

Clearly the Bobcats are listening to offers but they wisely want a lot back for such a big chip. That may be too much for teams looking to steal a player. Still, it’s a name to watch.

Ummmm how does this make Portland dangerous? Their best center is an old ass Marcus Camby. The only player they had close to a superstar was Roy but injuries prevented that. Portland just has a team full of nice players. They will compete but they won't even get out of the 1st round if they face the spurs, mavs, or lakers.

Aldrige, Batum, Wallace, Miller can give teams problems. And Camby, when on the court, can still help shut down the paint. Contenders? Maybe not. But I'd def. rather see Utah, Memphis (esp. if Rudy is still out), Phoenix or Houston instead of Portland in the first round.

Gerald Wallace is overrated up the ass. Really. I mean sure he's a "good" nice player to have but the guy hasnt every really been able to shoot or "take" over games. He's good defensively and can take it to the rack, but clearly lacks the motivation or the "balls" to dominate a game...

Trimble87
02-24-2011, 08:13 PM
fucking unbelievable, portland gets him for next to nothing but we couldnt?

I have heard a lot of spurs fan echo this sentiment... and its ridiculous.

What trade could we have done? RJ and Anderson for Wallace? Dice, Splitter and Quinn for Wallace? Those trades work financially, but they put us on the hook for a player making 10mil this year and even more next year with no money to fill out our bench. The first option isn't viable, we would be left with a gaping hole at SF off the bench having to play Hill Neal or Manu more minutes at SF. The second trade is better, but we would have a big rotation of Duncan-Blair-Bonner for this years playoff run... and people already think we're too small. if Charlotte bought out Dice then I would be all for it, but why would they? I know its fun to just say "OMG other teams traded for people and my team did nothing!!1 I hate my life /wrist." But come on now, think it through.

I mean, the hornets just pulled off a steal to get Landry.

Marks isn't part of the deal, but he sucks so I wouldn't care anyway. Camby will be back any day. He doesn't like to play until he feels absolutely no pain and he's always been like that throughout his career. He had minor knee surgery so he'll be fine.

Wallace being dealt by Bobcats ‘slap in the face’ (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-trailblazers-wallace)
By Mike Cranston

Calling it a “stab in the back” and “slap in the face,” Gerald Wallace says he was blindsided by the Charlotte Bobcats’ decision to trade him last month.

Back in Charlotte Thursday for the first time since being sent to Portland, Wallace said he was told by coach Paul Silas hours before the trade deadline that he wouldn’t be dealt and “then I get home and bam, I’m traded.”

The last original member of the 7-year-old franchise and the team’s only All-Star, Wallace says he envisioned retiring as a Bobcat. Now he’s getting used to new teammates on a likely playoff-bound team in Portland.

Wallace says Friday’s game against his former team will be “emotional.”
