Indeed. I think that his departure has done more to hurt the effectiveness/aesthetics of the offense than any player not named Diaw. Hopefully the increased chemistry that comes from a year of playing together and a player like Hanga can bring some of that back.

Hanga, a Hungarian wing who was drafted No. 59 overall by San Antonio in 2011 -- one pick before Isaiah Thomas -- is a free agent this summer, and EuroHoops.net reported recently that the Spurs plan to bring him to the NBA.

"My plan is to play in the NBA next season," Hanga said in March. "I'm 27, and I think it's the right moment."

Translating Hanga's ACB and EuroLeague statistics to their NBA equivalents shows him rating a little better than replacement level. He projects as a below-average 3-point shooter but a capable passer for a specialist. Hanga's best skill is apparently individual defense. He won the EuroLeague's Best Defender award this season and, intriguingly, former San Antonio wing Bruce Bowen is one of his closest SCHOENE comparisons.

Hanga seems like a useful player to have on the roster and potentially insurance if Jonathon Simmons' market in restricted free agency escalates beyond the point the Spurs are willing to match.

The Spurs reneged on a contract offer. There was a lot of stuff posted at the time. He waited for days at the hotel to sign his contract and had his physical. He got a better offer in Europe and wasn't going to sign a minimum deal. With Manu returning to play this past season the Spurs apparently didn't feel the pressure to pay him what he's worth. He's waited until the last possible moment to sign his deal in Europe waiting for the Spurs.

I still like Hanga, though he's not a solution to anything. But I'd want him to compete to be a role-player, but he'd want guaranteed-rotation money to come over. Waited a bit too long.

I still think he is an upgrade over Green he has better handles can finish at the rim better, good mid shot, his 3 ball maybe about the same to current Green. He excels at defense so I would say he could be just as good or better then Green

I think it came down to money and role. They probably wanted him to sign a deal like Brandon Paul, but considering what he got, I think he would have wanted a not-insignificant portion of the MLE. You have a lot of confidence in Hanga, but for a lot of reasons, I think PATFO wanted him to have to earn his spot against a number of potential Green replacements.

I think his defensive prowess is vastly overrated. He gets a decent amount of blocks and steals at the Euro level but he is only an average athlete by NBA standards and not particularly long with a 6-7 1/2 wingspan. I really don't see him being nearly as effective defending at the NBA level.

His three point shooting is also still below average. He finished last season at 33%, compare that to Paul who shot over 40% in his last season in Europe and still struggled badly to adjust.

they did their part a while ago, though i think there's a lot of uncertainty about what happened in the last year or two. he said the spurs broke a promise, but we dont know any details that im aware of

but its hanga who refused to come to the NBA a few years ago because he felt he "wasn't ready" and was more comfortable playing in europe. now he'll be 30 by the start of next season, and by wasting his years overseas instead of here his jumpshot is still lousy. had he come over 4 years ago like he should have, i'm sure chip could have help him out quite a bit
