okay okay, I'll give 127 hours a close second on the list of Boyle directed movies.

I guess watching a movie as adventurous and aesthetically pleasant as The Beach during my younger years is why I still won't rank anything higher.

I thought it was good, but it just lacked something that kept it from being great. The message was powerful, though: every Eden has it's serpent, and the serpent of The Beach was total selfishness.

Mouse, I give you credit. Looks like the film may have some potential! You need to get those fuckers to give you some background on how they became to be holders of signs. Some of these people could be Harvard Grads, or former college athletes with all the potential in the world but they screwed their life on coke, whores and other vices. What if you discover the next big thing in one of these characters. What if one of them has a voice for radio?!?! Wouldn't that be something?!?! It's to bad you didn't hit up the rodeo on dollar day and film the Pillsbury dough boy. That guy would've made your movie tbh.

Both, and about 9,000 other movies are better than Sunshine or Slumdog.

The Beach is a decent movie but it doesn't hold a candle to...

The Godfather Part II
North By Northwest
Jaws
Alien
Clockwork Orange
The Empire Strikes Back
Scarface
Pulp Fiction
A Clockwork Orange
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Fight Club
The Big Lebowski
American Graffiti
Sin City
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Platoon

...I'm starting to get a little bored listing some of the many movies that are better.

Sunshine was terrific until it became a slasher horror movie halfway through, and Slumdog is one of Boyle's worst movies.

It's easy for people to bad mouth an era after the fact. The 80s had no one to copy from like the 90s and today, The 80s left the 70s behind and created great movies still watched today.

You say it was an era of crappy high school kid movies, this coming from the generation that brought us this shit?

Since you were talking about all genres, add in a few like Raging Bull, Ran, Das Boot, etc

the 80s wasn't my favorite decade... for anything. There were some classic movies from then though.

Body Heat was great.

EDIT: Forgot about Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Damn.

faces of Death Alone trumps all other non 80s genre.

I am not here to say 80s movies rule all movies. I am saying you can't come in here and bad mouth a decade before you after the fact. The earlier decades in movies didn't have laptops and bad ass 3D software like they do today.

I wouldn't allow anyone from the 80s to bad mouth the 60s. It's like Barry Bonds saying he can kick Babe Ruth's ass. Only an idiot would try to compare one generation to the next and not know how to be fair in his or her's opinions. I am sure Mike Tyson can kick Jack Dempsey's ass and Eddie Van Halen can kick Buddy Holly's ass in a guitar solo.

It's like when young kids say 70s Music and classic rock sucks when the artist of the 90s and today say it was bands like Aero Smith and Judas priest and others who inspired them.

If you can't comprehend any of this then your mental capability is weak and frankly there is really no need to address this issue any further.

I liked the Beach. Trainspotting is in my top ten of all time. I also liked Shallow Grave. He did a great job with that one.

I didn't really care for Slumdog. Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! is the best movie about India I have ever seen.

Fair point. I just find Superbad more witty, funny and relatable. Also, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill >>>> anything American Pie has to offer in terms of acting.

The only problem I have is when he is exiled to the forest. It gets a little silly there after playing it straight all along the line.

Yea, Jonas What's His Face's character was derrivative and second rate AF. The McLovin character had its moments.

The movie on the whole probably wasn't the best comedy of its year let alone ever.

GOAT comedy of all time is Big Lebowski. Blazing Saddles is definitely up there as are a few other contenders.

SuperBad isn't even the best comedy of it's decade, Old School jizzes all over SuperBad. Actually, not too many Ferrell flicks that don't crush Superbad from that same time period. Talladega Nights definitely does.

eurotrip is fantastic, i think its in the 2nd tier. but i crack up every time i watch it.

superbad is tier 1. 40 year old virgin, wedding crashers also up there among "recent" flicks. american pie belongs in that category too.

my cousin vinny is GOAT among comedies

overall i'd go with shawshank redemption though

man, im really not that big a ferrell fan. other than anchorman and the other guys (extremely underrated comedy), i wouldn't put any of his flicks in the same tier as superbad. he's great in wedding crashers but thats a very limited role

I've seen it a hundred times but didn't come to this conclusion until watching it a couple months ago, when I was struck by just how perfect it is. The casting is perfect, the score is one of the best of all time, the story is deceptively complex for a mainstream movie if you think about it. Just an absolute masterpiece of cinema that manages to have wide appeal without being dumbed down in any way.

man, im really not that big a ferrell fan. other than anchorman and the other guys (extremely underrated comedy), i wouldn't put any of his flicks in the same tier as superbad. he's great in wedding crashers but thats a very limited role

SuperBad just wasnt funny to me. Only comedy more underwhelming to me was The Hangover. And yeah, some Ferrell stuff I didnt really like such as Blades of Glory and the basketball one. But Old School, Anchorman, Talladega Nights are all better than SuperBad. Cera sucks. Fat Jonah Hill plays a real good try-too-hard but nothing special, imo.

Hoosiers, The Natural, Slap Shot, Field Of Dreams, Rocky, Miracle, Major League, Tin Cup, A League Of Their Own, Littler Giants Sandlot, Rudy, Caddy Shack, Cool Runnings, Eight Men Out, The Replacements, Lady Bugs, Bend It Like Beckham, Semi Pro are all better.

I would put it ahead of White Men Can't Jump, Any Given Sunday, Jerry McGuire, The Mighty Ducks, Space Jam, Blue Chips, He Got Game, Remember The Titans, The Blind Side, and The Bad News Bears.

Haven't seen Friday Night Lights or Moneyball. I knew each situation in real life and didn't want to watch Hollywood glorify the fuck out of them.

NCFOM agitates people because it's a noir in western clothing. I don't see how people could get upset after the subversion precedent had been set years before by McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Unforgiven, now it's just modern day.

The Natural copped out by not subverting expectations like the novel did, but it was the right move in the Reagan era.

Lots of great films mentioned here. I keep coming back to Lone Star. After all this time, I still can't think of any way that $3 million movie could be improved.

I couldn't get into Menace II Society. Great soundtrack, but that movie always struck me as how white people would do a minstrel show hood movie with so many 1D caricatures. I liked Boyz N the Hood so much more where Dough felt like a real person, like that one kid you knew back in school who was a fuck-up because his mom loved the son from another father more.

I need to revisit Boyz, haven't seen that in 25 years. Menace is fresher on my mind because I saw it for the first time within the last 5 years and have seen it a couple times since.

The Revisionist Western or Anti-Western is a subgenre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genre) of the Western (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)) film that traces its roots to the mid-1960s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960s_in_film) and early-1970s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970s_in_film).

There are about a 10ish movies I will watch at least once a year every year.

The Godfather
King Kong 1933
Casablanca
Cool Hand Luke
Road House
Crossroads
On the Waterfront
The Seachers
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Remember the Titans

Citizan Kane is ok but probably the most overrated movie of all time.

Really hard to pinpoint the greatest movie because of the different genres.

BUT......The Godfather.....gets my vote.

Was so interesting for me in so many different ways. Its your basic Coen, start with a plan and things swing wildly out of control, but the things interwoven are great. The accents are what stick with many, but there are so many interesting interactions. The marriage between Marge and Norm is so typical, but lays bare a strong woman having to bring her big baby man along; But at the same time they are totally in love. Little things like this... Old HS crushes crushed in an absolutely baldly embarrassing manner because being polite is not enough... so much little human interplay stuffed into this movie.

Cannot be watched once.

Rewatch for me because I saw it as a youngster and had no idea why I liked it so much.
An older person explained why he liked it and then I started learning why I liked it. Then Snowball because I missed so much. That same person would be fairly astounded if he asked me why I liked it now because I could not stop.

Just one example: How the father treats his son when he has to tell him what has happened to mom. This seemingly mild mannered, but incredibly desperate man, shows the most callous sense of humanity that overlaps with the basic generalization of the unflappable midwestern personality. I found it thoroughly disgusting. Then it’s, “ go practice your accordion” attitude and don’t bug me with your unnecessary emotions. I have more important things to ponder.
