Amid a number of bills filed in Texas that address the issue of illegal immigration, one, proposed by Republican state Rep. Debbie Riddle, stands out.

As proposed, House Bill 1202 would create tough state punishments for those who "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" hire an unauthorized immigrant. Violators could face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

But it is an exception included in the bill that is drawing attention. Those who hire unauthorized immigrants would be in violation of the law -- unless they are hiring a maid, a lawn caretaker or another houseworker.

So stupid. Making a mockery of a complex and important issue. Punish those who hire illegals with impunity or don't even try.

blah blah blah

Considering how fucking rascist that is I know which I would pick.

Maybe next the texas legislature can just pass a resolution saying the only good mexican is one who cuts your grass or washes your dishes.

Restaurants and hotels could take a big hit, if it passes and gets enforced. Will it pass?

Maybe people should read the actual text

Sec.A40.03.AAEXCEPTIONS. It is an exception to the
application of Section 40.02 that the actor:
(1)AAemployed or contracted with the unauthorized
alien, or entered into a contract or subcontract described by
Section 40.02(a)(3), for the purpose of obtaining labor or other
work to be performed exclusively or primarily at a single-family
residence in which the actor resides; or

(2)AAattempted to verify the unauthorized alien ’s
immigration status or work authorization in a manner that is more
likely than not to produce a correct and reliable result concerning
an individual ’s immigration status or work authorization and had no
knowledge of the unauthorized alien ’s actual immigration status or
work authorization.

I think it has more to do with individuals, i.e. single-family residential employer, not having the same resources to do the necessary background checks, etc.?

I didn't see the word maid or landscaper anywhere.

So it's OK to be an illegal alien in TX if you work (for cash) for residential "employers".

Some Illegal Aliens Are More, or Less, Illegal Than Others

... especially the ones rich people hire to look after their estates, McMansions (the poor richies can't afford to do background checks)

Thanks for clearing that up, but to be honest, I probably should have written my last post in blue.

Bitchslap her. The second exception is also a loophole.
