http://www.projectspurs.com/2011-articles/march/nowitzki-terry-say-lakers-are-the-team-to-beat.html

The San Antonio Spurs own the best record in the NBA (50-11), were the first team to 50 wins this season and own the lead in the Southwest Division.

Despite that, Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki thinks the Los Angeles Lakers, not the Spurs, are the team to beat:

"I think the Lakers to me are still the heavy favorite in the West. After that, there are a bunch of teams bundled up. But I still think the Lakers are the heavy favorite in the West.''

"They've won two (titles) in a row, they're long and they got the same players and they got the best player in the world,'' Nowitzki said.

Of course Spurs fans "favorite" Maverick Jason Terry agreed with his teammate and in an ironic twist, actually complimented the Spurs' success this season:

"No question, the Lakers, always, because they're the champs,'' Terry said of who the favorite is in the West. "But what San Antonio has done makes them a favorite, too. We're chasing all those guys and we're going to play out this underdog role."

I understand the Lakers are the defending champs and own the crown but shall I remind Nowitzki and Terry the Spurs are 2-0 against Los Angeles. Also, it's the Spurs the Mavericks are chasing for the number one seed and not the Lakers.

What's wrong with what Dirk said? He's right, everybody's gunning for the Lakers cause they are the champs

Yep. Nothing to get upset over. The lakers the champs until someone knocks them off.

Thats true. The Spurs haven't won shit this year. Defending champs are the Lakers.

Spurs are 0-1 against the Mavs with Dirk on the floor. IMO they are playing the best of anyone in the league right now and are the Spurs' biggest threat this season.

Perhaps, but the Lakers aren't even going to have home-court advantage beyond the first round.

WCF will be Spurs-Mavs.

That's more fact than opinion. What are they like 17-1 in their last 18 games ?

Defending champs are always the favorites until somebody beats them. Regular season records mean very little.

Uh, this is absolutely true. The Lakers are the two-time defending champions. They should be the ones with the target on their back, no matter what.

Dallas has to say this because they are going to have to go through the Lakers first to get to the Spurs.

It didn't work out that well last time.

Yep. Pop made his "lakers are the team to beat" statement earlier in the year.

Newsflash: a roster that is first or second in the league in highest payroll is not an underdog.

The Lakers are the defending champs, and Kobe has facefucked the Mavs in spectacular fashion over the years. The Lakers also aren't playing particularly well; there's no sense in trying to rile them up.

I used to want the Mavs to beat LAL but the sooner these Mavs clowns go fishing the better and let the SAS have the honors then.

Here's the truth...

When the mavs play the lakers this year in the playoffs...

the mavs will assume the fetal position and/or bend over for the lakers the way they always do...because they fear the lakers...they are already conceding...

if the mavs had the same attitude against the lakers that they have against the spurs--the mavs would finally beat the lakers...but they are scared.

On another note...the mavs signing of Brewer only helped the lakers ...

because it took away from the spurs another player that would have helped the spurs beat the lakers...and since the mavs are going to bend over for the lakers...they just made the road to the title easier for l.a.

because the spurs are the team that will NOT assume the fetal position for the lakers...

If you don't think LA is the biggest threat and sleep on them because of this you just said then you are crazy. Who cares about being 0-1 with Dirk in there, does that make them more of a threat than the two time champs in the playoffs? LA knows how to win, don't sleep.

Pop would agree. The Spurs would agree. And I would agree too.

For now, the "One and Done Boys" had better try getting out of the first round. And they'd better hope they don't draw the Blazers.

Cue Tlong's commentary...

"one and done boys" very creative. Only thing dumber is hearing Spurs fans really thinking they have a shot at beating Dallas or LA:lol

According to history the current lakers aren't the team to beat. In the last 30 years only 1 team has won a title when they weren't a top 2 seed in there conference and that was the '95 rockets who won the title as a 6 seed. So yeah I would say LA ain't winning shit this year I don't see how they can grab the 2 seed even with Parkers injury I can't see the spurs slipping to number 3. The team to beat is who ever is in the finals.

Who are the Mavs? They are the obnoxious little brother that the Spurs were to the Lakers back in 00-02. The Lakers didn't give a shit what the Spurs had to say until 03 when the Spurs finally walked the walk. The Spurs and Lakers have a rivalry, because they've traded championships. Until the Mavs win a championship, they're just talking the talk.

In recent years, the Mavs have been the equivalent of a little brother finally beating his big brother at connect four, only to lose to his sister in the next game.

Spurs are the team to "catch" but the Lakers are still the team to "beat" nothing has change since two months ago....

Also, Am I the only one who was disgusted with letting the Cavs grab 16 Offensive Rebounding..I guess you can let that slide cause we won by a bunch, But once they grab a O reb. they are already deep in the paint and we don't have the shot blocking length to contest when so deep.

I'm sorry guys, I LOVE my spurs but this will simply not get it done against longer more physical rebounding teams. IMO Defense and Rebounding win games and Championships. What good is Defense if we can't grab a rebound against the Cavs?

So maybe we should have someone on our team say the Mavs and Lakers are the teams to beat.

The Mavs have not played the Lakers in the playoffs since the 1980's. But yep, the Mavs are hoping to "finally" beat them. What a thorn in the Mavs' side they've been!
