I thought they took that D-League guy as next in line for two 10 day contracts ... Novak brought nothing to the table what the Spurs need

Yuk, they couldn't do better than Novak? Better to sign youth with upside.

While it's not a big deal at all, I don't like it.

Filling the roster with young D-League players has failled over and over in the past so I can get Spurs getting with vets but Novak?
Spurs roster is filled with shooters, adding another one is superfluous. I would have like way more Spurs signing a defensive minded player.

I love it, If Bonner goes limp in the playoffs as he has done the last 2yrs, you at least have another 6-10guy that you can throw in there for 5minutes or so to stretch the floor by jacking up a few 3's. Bonner, sadly is a big part of what the spurs like to do offensively. That is why the last 2yrs he has gotten 20+ minutes a game in the regular season/playoffs. In the playoffs he goes mia, so at least with novak you really wont be losing anything from an offensive standpoint. And Novak can play both forward positions and his defense is the same as bonners anyway. Good decision imo, but they still need and athletic 3/4 player imo.

Don't like the the signing. Brings nothing to the team except a practice player. Won't even dress for playoff games unless there is an injury

And Novak can play both forward positions and his defense is the same as bonners anyway.

His defense is worse and his rebounding is much worse than Bonner. Doesn't really matter since he won't be in uniform unless Bonner or one of the other bigs is injured.

He'll be a practice player more than who else they'd sign from a crappy DLeague?

We're talking about the 13th or 14th player, so it doesn't matter very much. Would have preferred to see a player that isn't just a lesser version of a player (Bonner) already on the team.

I'll tell you this right now . . .

If Novak gets PT in the playoffs over Anderson/Splitter, I am going to break into Pop's wine cellar and drink until the cops arrive.

With Quinn, Neal, Anderson, Novak and Bonner we can really spread the floor. 3p > 2p who cares about D?

I guess Novak will be the new Quinn with Spurs fans.

Don't like it.

Kapono not getting bought out ruined Pop's master plan tbh. He was ready to dominate with the "worthless white shooter" lineup.

If any of those three see more than garbage time in the playoffs I think Spursfans are going to need something stronger than vino.

Not really sure what the point of hanging on to Novak is, but whatever. If the Spurs playoff hopes rest on the 14th/15th guy on the roster than they're screwed whether that guy is Steve Novak or not.

I kind of wished they would have given this spot to a young project in hopes to develop. Oh well, at least its a at the very end of the bench player. Still this is a bit of wasted money and potential if you ask me.

Seems to me Novak's only role other than garbage time will be if we're in need of a 3 with under 5sec to go. If he hits one big shot in a situation like that, it'll be worth it. Fortunately we haven't been faced with many the past 20 days.

Under 5 seconds and we need a three:

Manu
TP
Timmy
Neal
and
Novak???????

is what I would say. Most likely not Parker since under 5 seconds you have to run a set play and usually only get 1st or 2nd option. You could make an argument for Hill, though.

I am a contrarian as I saw him play on the road and he impressed me with his hustle and willing to go inside and he hustled and least at tried to play some defense - albeit it was a blowout against the Wizards, but he went head to toe with some bigger players and effectively for a limited stretch. Why not a guy like this?

03-04-2011, 02:57 PM
Not liking this, but who cares... This spot doesn't get minutes anyways... would have been nicer to have a big body to challenge blair in practice.. Blair must eat our bigs alive in practice.

Might be a little early to call it a trend, but Leo Lyons has been tearing it up for the Toros at PF, averaging 30 points and shooting 44% from the arc the past three games, the last two against Joe Alexander. Hasn't really got much over Novak save a better inside game and younger legs able to run the floor for 40 minutes. Probably worth keeping an eye on going into the summer.

True that. Good point.

My point was that no matter what his skill set is, I don't think you put Novak in that situation if all he's been playing is garbage time.

Trust me, they've got no worries - and my team of cartoon players and I are no worse for the wear.

Spurs salaries according to Yahoo.

George Hill 1.157 mil.

This signing does not surprise me in the least. It is consistent with what I expect of Pop in his "system". Steve is a direct replacement for Matt Bonner. He has similar skills. If Matt's knee problem resurfaces, then Novak can take over that role.

Do I wish the Spurs had signed a shot-blocking Big? Absolutely!

Baseline
03-04-2011, 04:22 PM
I'm fine with it. Novak has some size, so it's better to have him than yet another 6'5" guy. And he can flat-out shoot it.

I've seen him play quite a bit here in LA when he was with the Clippers, and when he got on the floor, he was actually a very solid player. Obviously not the most athletic guy, but if he were, we couldn't sign him for the league minimum either.

What do some of you want the Spurs to do? There's nothing really else out there. And it's not like he'll be in the rotation come Playoff time anyway with TD, Blair, Bonner, Dice, and Splitter ahead of him. Just the 11th/12th man on the team..

Novak is likely the best option for a 3 under 5 sec.

He's tall and has a quick and high release.

Bonner has a low release.
Neal is too short.

The next best option is RJ.

I don't like his chances of making a buzzer beater wearing a suit and dress shoes.

a lot of over reaction for a man that won't see the floor, which would basically be the case for anyone we signed for that spot

I think it's useful to have a combo forward, and I think it's useful for us to have a bit of size at the 3 available, so on that basis I welcome this

unrelated, but how much of McDowell have you seen? Watched a little of the game last night and he seems to play pretty good defense and sees the floor well. He didn't have good numbers, but he looked like he has potential.

He didn't have good numbers, but he looked like he has potential. That was his first game. He looked a little too deferential, but that is to be expected. He did help limit Dentmon in the second half after he scored like 24 in the first.

We'll see how he does tomorrow; backup point is pretty much the hardest position to fill in the D-League.
