Why is Mississippi "colored" black? :)

What in the hell is this proving. Doesn't it take money to travel overseas? When I think of money Mississippi really doesn't come to mind. California and New York, yes. Oh, and look at that. They have the highest amount. Stupid thread. Waste of bandwidth. You don't need a damn passport to go to Mexico or Canada. Plus there's the frickin Internet to know what's going on anywhere. Psssst. There's fighting in the middle east, OP. :lol

Point is, why are those ppl who don't get out of the country the most opinionated on external affairs. Why are those ppl the most scared of extremist islam and china and russia??? they don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

People fear the unknown. The less they know about the outside world, the more they hate it and stick to theirs.

I don't really buy that. There is such thing as southern hospitality which is not a myth.

IMO the problem is the rhetoric that is repeated onto these poor ignorant folk. The fear mongering.

I actually agree with this for the most part. The climate is warm. They don't have crazy heating and electric bills. They can work enough to live, then chill the rest of the time. They don't have to travel. They don't have to work to become multimillionaires because there is no incentive to become multimillionaires.

Warm weather breeds a more lax culture.

I think southern hospitality exists...if you're from the south or you live here or you're from America and you're visiting through. I don't think them southerners would be too hospitable to a family of Syrians traveling through the south.

I agree one the second part though. These are the people that tend to gobble up whatever bullshit Fox News shits out for them so it's not surprising that most of their viewpoints coincide with right-wing nutjob television.

So the farther away you live from another country, the less likely you are to have a passport. Fascinating.

Equally fascinating is how the states with higher poverty rates have lower percentages of world travelers. Never would have guessed that.

We should subsidize the travel industry by giving poor people grants to travel to ONE country for 7 days a year. Except for countries in the Middle East and Turkey, since we'd prolly end up sending over people to get radicalized on the tax payer dime LOL!

Interesting that Darrin immediately associated them as black and poor. :lol

But Blacks really aren't the ones calling Obama a European fascist socialist, and they're still outnumbered in the heart of it all (Mississippi) by nearly 2 to 1. So the poor white dummies who vote against their own economic interest and buy into the conservative rhetoric are the ones actually in control there, and they're still primarily the ones who don't know all that much about the rest of the world and kind of think that they do.

This really isn't as alarming as a statistic that I saw right before I left for Germany as an exchange student in my junior year of high school. It said that 60% of ALL Americans never leave a 150 mile radius of their birthplace (this was not targeted at one political party or another, but I thought it seemed relatively appropriate). This may have changed one way or another since that was 15 years ago.

Not surprising. The US is huge. It isnt Europe where you can drive 300 miles and be in a completely different country, with a completely different culture and history.

Whats really different from the 48 contiguous states?

Besides stupid accents, traffic signals and regional food, not a whole helluva lot.

Europeans have the luxury of culture due to historical conquerors, geography and proximity to the birth of civilization as we know it.

Fuck them.

Europeans don't just travel around Europe (you don't need a passport to travel between the Schengen countries anymore, and that includes France, Germany, Spain and Italy). Most Europeans, particularly western Europeans travel to far flung destinations in Australia, Asia and Africa.

It's really about what people want to do with their disposable income, generally, Americans prefer to buy things, Europeans prefer to buy experiences.

I have taken vacations to Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. I usually do a hike in the Andes. There are always a lot of Europeans on the trips, usually from Germany or England. I don't remember seeing too many Americans.

However, I recently took a European Baltic trip and visited, England, Denmark, Russia, Germany and Finland. Most tourists that I met were American.

Having a passport means absolutely nothing about where someone has traveled and how culturally in-tune they are with different societies. Hell I have traveled to the middle east and visted at Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Israel, but I was on business and didn't get to see a damn thing. Visiting those countries did not shed a whole hell of a lot of insight into their cultures.
