Checking the evacuation zones on the map. From the looks of it, the evac zones are relatively shallow. (Then again, maybe it's because I'm used to the much larger fucking hurricane evac zones after living in MS... natural disaster follows me.)

Then again, you never know. They say the wave is going to hit at 3 AM. Maybe it will be like last year, where they hyped up a possible wave that was about as bad as high tide.

Tsunami of the year all years.

This tsunami is as about as big as a tsunami caused directly by a quake can theoretically get, but landslides can cause much much larger ones. The highest ever recorded was about 1700 feet in Lituya Bay, Alaska when a huge section of a mountain and glacier collapsed into the bay after a large earthquake.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dd/Lituya_Bay_overview.jpg

It's a very real possibility in the next few thousand years that the east coast of the US gets wiped out a tsunami like that one above when one of the Canary Islands that is splitting apart breaks off into the sea.

Japan was struck by its strongest earthquake (http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2011/eq_110311_c0001xgp/neic_c0001xgp_l.html) in at least a century, an 8.9-magnitude temblor that shook buildings across Tokyo and unleashed a tsunami as high as 10 meters, engulfing towns along the northern coast.
At least 26 people were killed by the 33-foot wave and many are missing, according to state broadcaster NHK Television, which showed footage of waves sweeping away buildings and vehicles as far as 1.5 kilometers inland. Airports were closed and bullet train services suspended. More than 4 million homes are without power, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The Philippines (http://topics.bloomberg.com/philippines/), Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (http://topics.bloomberg.com/papua-new-guinea/) were among more than 20 countries bracing for a possible tsunami, after the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center raised an alert. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for the entire U.S. west coast. Sirens were sounded and coastal areas evacuated in Hawaii (http://topics.bloomberg.com/hawaii/), the Associated Press (http://topics.bloomberg.com/associated-press/) reported.

The reason the Lituya Bay tsunami was so high was because of the displacement of water was confined. It's analogous to dropping a bowling ball in a bath tub as opposed to a pond. Nevertheless, the Canary Islands event will make the Sumatran tsunami look weak.

"As early as 426 BC, the Greek historian Thucydides inquired in his book History of the Peloponnesian War (3.89.1-6) about the causes of tsunamis. He argued rightly that it could only be explained as a consequence of ocean earthquakes, and could see no other possible causes for the phenomenon."

What the fuck is that. Looks like the ocean flushing like a toilet.

well we all know how earthquakes are generated. as the two plates collide, you get a subduction zone due to differences in density of the crust. Thats how crust is destroyed, it basically gets recycled . but in sub zone the more dense one sinks down into earths mantle, I'm guessing that creates some sort of a vacuum to say the least as it does look like a toilet.
