View Full Version : Jon Barry picks OKC over Spurs

Just saw where Jon Barry and Michael Wilbon picked the NBA playoffs bracket style. Barry picked the West and Wilbon the East. Barry has the Spurs losing to the Thunder in the 2nd Round. (The only upset that was picked)
Their picks
WCF: Thunder vs Lakers (Lakers win)
ECF: Bulls vs Celtics (Celtics win)

I'll agree with that...but that's a pretty big "IF". That's like saying "If Yao Ming" or "If Greg Oden" can stay healthy...

Not a fair comparison. Perkins isn't chronically injured like the other 2. Before Game 6 last year he was solid as a rock. Either way I'd still take SA in the series.

If I had a brother, and someone on the Spurs fucked his wife and publicly embarrassed him and his kids, I'd root against them, pick against them at every given opportunity, use my public job to insult and talk them down and I'd :lol every time they lost or met the slightest misfortune, and I've been a Spurs fan for 25 years.

Yeah But I think a trend is starting to form with Perk. Do you honestly think the Celtics would trade away a good young center (only like 3 of them in the NBA) if they think he's gonna be fine. I'm just going off of what the Celtics have done. I don't think Danny Ainge is stupid. And trading away a "healthy" perk would be stupid.

Perkins was only as good defensively as Garnett yelling at him when he was out of position made him.
tbh, our worst mismatch with OKC was Jeff Green on offense vs any of our bigs. He really stretched the floor for their penetrators.

And in that RJ/McDyess offseason several if not most of the talking heads picked the Spurs as a strong contender, hell even Coach Pop joked he should be fired if he couldn't bring home a championship with that talent. Well it took a season longer than expected but the Spurs are back into contention now but good luck getting attention over the defending LA champs, Heat, Bulls, and Celtics.

Ainge traded Perk b/c of his exorbitant asking price ($10mil/year if I'm not mistaken), and since he was a FA after the season he didn't want to lose Perk for nothing. I'm not calling Ainge stupid, but since it looked like a deal wasn't going to get done he tried to get something instead of nothing. Perkins is still very young (26), and has proven to be an EXCELLENT low-post defender. He defends Howard, Bynum, Shaq, etc better than anyone in a 1-on-1 capacity.

I agree with everything you've said....And maybe I'm being unfair to label him an "injury waiting to happen". I'm not saying Perk sucks by no means. He gave LA's bigs all they could handle the past couple of years. But let's wait and see how he plays with OKC before we label him a messiah in OKC.

His broadcast of Game 3 vs. the Suns last year was extremely slanted. Bear in mind that I have never accused any broadcaster of any sport of hating any of my teams - but Barry is one where I have noticed an exception.
I had never noticed anything prior to that from him, but he seems to be piling on since.

He's no savior by any stretch, and like you said time will tell if he's as effective as he was in Boston. He was a perfect fit for that team--but a vital one nonetheless. Just look at the void he left in Game 7 when LA annihilated BOS on the boards.
The encouraging thing about Perkins, as mentioned before, is his ability to play great one-on-one defense against the league's elite bigs. He rarely allows his opponent to catch the ball too close to the basket and his stocky frame makes it hard for opposing big men to back him down with ease. He plays with a bulldog mentality and relishes playing defense over offense.
OKC was an anomaly last year b/c not only were they young and talented--but they had two young defensive studs (Ibaka down low, and Sefolosha on the perimeter)--which give LA fits. Their defense has slacked significantly this year and so the addition of Perkins's toughness can only help.
Yeah, they lost the versatile Green, but they're getting MUCH better production from Harden off the bench this year.
"If" Perkins can come back healthy, this team is going to be hell and a half to get through.
This year though, SA will beat them.

I agree. Harden can play and the Thunder are going to be a tough team to beat...no matter who they throw out at center.

Andrew Bynum has a greater chance of going down than Perkins, tbh.
This is Jon Barry we're talking about. I'm surprised he didn't pick the Spurs to go down in round 1.
The Thunder have pretty good individual defenders, but their team defense is still lacking. Ball movement crushes them, and the Spurs have that in spades.

Very true.
Actually, truthfully if it turns out to be the Grizzlies in the first round, they scare me more than OKC. Not sure my fear is rational, just a feeling. If we were going to get upset in the first two rounds that seems the more dangerous series. The Grizzlies have nothing to lose, the Thunder are supposed to be showing progress (more pressure on them.)
That said, I can’t see us being in REAL danger until the WCF.
As for Barry, not sure what his problem is. It’s like all the media (ESPN especially) just wants the Spurs to go away. I’ve never seen a multiple-title winner in the NBA treated with such impatience to slide into irrelevancy. The closest was the Bad Boy Pistons. The media (outside of Detroit) really kind of wanted them to go away too, since they ended the days of the very popular Bird Celtics/Magic Lakers and were delaying Jordan’s titles. We’re sort of the annoying group that interrupts Kobe’s Lakers every once in a while, while the media awaits the Heat’s preordained future.
The sad truth is the public at large isn’t interested in us, so it annoys the media to have to mention the Spurs. This annoyance turns into a sort of subconscious wishful thinking that our time as contenders is done. So they pick against us. Eventually, we will go through a fallow period and the media can take a sigh of relief and finally say “We told you so.”
Fortunately, for the time being at least, we keep rewriting their scripts for them.

I don't know why some people are acting like this is some outlandish thing? If you were going to pick an upset, IMO, this would be the most likely one and I am not even that huge of a believer in the Thunder.
However, they do have two elite perimeter scorers that the Spurs have no answer for.

but the Spurs are 3-0 against them this year, so naturally it would be an easy series. The regular season is a concrete indicator of what happens in the playoffs

Jon Barry played for Denver and Houston in the last few years of his career. San Antonio has knocked out Denver Multiple times in the playoffs and the Rockets have lost the season series to San Antonio for the 14th consecutive season IIRC (in other words, since Duncan arrived). Is it any wonder there is animosity on J Barry's part?
Jon Barry has had reason to dislike SA (and has) for a lot longer than the whole thing with his brother.
TBH, picking OKC over San Antonio is not a huge stretch. Picking OKC over the Lakers or Dallas is not a huge stretch either given their raw talent. With experience, OKC will be playing in the Finals at some point in the near future and there's nothing anyone (including the lakers) can do about it.

The Spurs have been winning with offensive efficiency, not dominating defense. I can see why people would have concern about how they will do in the playoffs and getting to the Finals. Most honest fans here have the same curiosity. Nonetheless, Jon Barry is sort of douchey. Nowhere near as cool as Brent.

This has nothing to do with OKC. Van Gundy and Barry are nothing more than butthurt announcers who take every chance that they can to dismiss the Spurs.
Both are bitter because the Spurs have always been in their way to get to the next level. Asking Barry what he thinks about SA is like asking a republican what he thinks about Obama or a democrat about Bush.

Terrible upset pick by Barry. But then again, I would expect nothing less from him. In my upset pick I would go with a team that is:
- too old (not the Spurs anymore since our scoring comes from guys like TP, Manu, Hill, Blair, Neal, Bonner)
- too inexperienced relative to the opponent (in no way is this the case for the Spurs against any team in the NBA, especially against OKC)
- badly coached (again, not the Spurs, since Pop is the longest tenured active coach in the NBA)
If anyone were to get upset, it would be Dallas. And that's not because I'm a Spurs homer, it's because they have a track record of being upset by lower seeded teams and have dramatically changed their roster again this year, twice. Those types of changes can come to haunt a team in the playoffs when options 1 and 2 can be shut down (especially if they play a team with long defenders who can guard Nowitzki like the Lakers or Thunder).
