View Full Version : Scientists claim to have found Atlantis

It has remained a tantalising mystery for thousands of years, but now a U.S. led research team believes it has found the legendary lost city of Atlantis. They claim to have pinpointed the exact location of the metropolis under mud flats in southern Spain. The team of archaeologists and geologists are convinced that Atlantis -swamped by a tsunami - is submerged just north of Cadiz.

Professor Richard Freund of the University of Hartford, Connecticut, who lead the international team, said: 'This is the power of tsunamis.

'It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about.'

The team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site then surveyed it with a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology. Buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park they found a strange series of 'memorial cities,' built in Atlantis' image by the refugees who fled the destructive tsunami. Atlantis residents who did not die built new cities inland, claimed Freund.

The team's findings will be unveiled on Sunday in 'Finding Atlantis,' a new National Geographic Channel special.

Freund said the 'twist' of finding the memorial cities makes him confident Atlantis was buried in the mud flats.

He said: 'We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archaeology, that makes a lot more sense.'

Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis some 2,600 years ago, describing it as 'an island situated in front of the straits called the Pillars of Hercules.'

atlantis is a reference to the "sea peoples" of archipelago greece. every few years or so you have a scientific team claiming to find atlantis.

it. doesnt. exist.

it has only been casually been mentioned throughout history, and even then, its only a small island in greece that has already been excavated. im happy theyve been able to uncover segments of a seafaring community (presumably), but its dumb to call it atlantis.

imo, this is just an advertisement for the show. move along.

the best candidate is probably santorini

the guy in charge is a professor of jewish studies, so take the findings with a grain of salt.

who knows, schliemann was just a businessman and nobody believed troy had existed.

I disagree about its existance.

I think the odds are extremely high that it did exist somewhere, given the accounts that we have. Not the stuff of legend, but a real city of its time.

The only real question to me is where it was.

As was pointed out, most thought Troy was a myth, and they are constantly finding cities that have been literally lost in the sands of time, such as the Sodom and Gomorrah of the Old Testament.

claiming you found a mythological city without excavating it is a pretty bold claim, dont you think?

if it is, kudos to them, but this is right in my field of study...so of course im skeptical.

for now, its just a go word they use to gain interest of the public, and it worked.

and what accounts are those? two lines uttered by a greek philosopher? never to be revisited by ancient historians like herodotus and thucydides?
troy was different because it had an entire epic written on it and was pinpointed to a specific area. any other writings refer to atlantis as the open ocean, and not a city. note the atlantic ocean.

claiming that you found atlantis is grasping for straws. anything can be claimed as atlantis because theres not enough writing to disprove otherwise. the jewish studies professor should have claimed that he surveyed an underwater community and excavated it before he even thought about uttering the word. that puts him in the same boat as the christians who found a ship plank and called it the ark.

Juan Villarías-Robles, who works in anthropology for the Spanish government's research group CSIC, says the television special is exaggerated and lacks any science basis for its claims.

He said while the photos west of Gibraltar seemed to show buried rectangular buildings and concentric circles of a buried city near a beach, it only 'became Atlantis' because of National Geographic interest. He told the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/8381219/Lost-city-of-Atlantis-buried-in-Spanish-wetlands.html), "Richard Freund was a newcomer to our project and appeared to be involved in his own very controversial issue concerning King Solomon's search for ivory and gold in Tartessos, the well documented settlement in the Donaña area established in the first millennium BC. He became involved in what we were doing and provided funding for probes through his connections with National Geographic and Associated Producers.

"He left and the film company told us the documentary would be finished in April or May. But we did not hear from him and are very surprised it has appeared so soon and makes such fanciful claims."

Villarías-Robles went on to say the entire "memorial cities" idea was false and says his team plan to offer their own conclusions later this year.

:lmao

It never has been actually, it's either rem or sieverts. Rads are a unit for dose (radiation absorbed dose).

*crickets*

get back to your desk jobs.

and for reference, Atlantis was presumed to be located off the "Pillars of Hercules" which are near Gibraltar. that means it was just a general term used by the ancients to talk about seafaring peoples who were not of Mediterranean origin. it was based off of an island that was home to a group of people who raided the northern coast of Egypt. the island was later destroyed by a volcano.

lol armchair archaeologists defending a professor of Jewish Studies who has no business being in Classical Archaeology then turning around and laughing at "biblical scholars." hypocrites.
