Didn't see one so I thought I'd start one.

Season begins tomorrow night 3/15 with a great match up.

Sounders vs Galaxy

We also welcome 2 new teams to MLS. Portland Timbers & Vancouver Whitecaps.

Here's to a great season :toast

The crowd probably was insane for Davies. I'm glad to see him back.

I've only been to 2 of the pitches in MLS (Toronto & Seattle). By far Seattle is an incredible place to see a game. Qwest is the closest you are going to get to a crowd like in South America or Europe with the amount of fans attending. Seattle is going to average 36,000 fans per game this season. BMO Field was okay. Good fans, but not that crazy. I'm planning on the trip to Vancouver BC & Portland for a couple of games this season. One day hope to make it to all the stadiums in MLS.

One nice thing about the Sounders playing at Qwest is that they can open more seating if they want to. Went to a friendly a couple of years ago China vs Mexico & they had over 56,000. But when Real Madrid & DC United played back in 2006 they had over 66,000. I can't wait to see what Man U & the Sounders friendly is going to pull.

What a great year in MLS it's going to be.

Should be an amazing season. Just picked up my season tickets to watch RSL dominate at home again this year. Our fans aren't as crazy as Seattle's, but I feel like we have the best home advantage in the MLS. High expectations for RSL this year.

Going to SLC to watch Adele in May and might just go watch Sounders and RSL.

She puts on a great show live--well, once she got over the stage fright portion of the 19 tour. I guess, though, it's expected when you're 22 and can pretty much outsing anyone American Idol has ever produced.

I did catch the Sounders vs. Galaxy opening night match-up and I must say, the product is getting better each and every season. It's also great to see the Seattle citizenry get behind their MLS team like they do for the Seahawks and Mariners. It's a shame they couldn't keep the Sonics in town because that was one of the harder places to play in the NBA.

I wonder if the Galaxy will win it all in their twilight portion of the team's make-up.

Was definitely one of the more exciting 1st halves i've seen in a while. Should have ended 3-1. Donovan should have kicked the ball harder late in the 1st half when Reem saved it off the goal line. Juan Pablo Angel's goal being disallowed due to offside pissed me off too lol.

Like they said last night, wasn't even making a play on the ball. Zakuani's been out before for Seattle and they played fine, but that doesn't take away the significance of the injury. The guys that took them down do need to be suspended, cause it's ridiculous. Like they don't care.

NYRB sends DeRo to DCU for Dax. Wonder if this could mean more PT for Juan

Doubt it. Juan's problem is being behind Henry and Rogers right now. Rogers has played pretty well in the RB games I've watched. Juan's time is coming but they're bringing him along slowly.

That move is all about shoring up their defense since they have horrible keepers.

scott
06-29-2011, 04:34 PM
I was thinking that a formation change could be coming, not as a permanant solution but maybe in spurts, where they go with a 3-striker triange (since they are losing DeRo's offensive skills in exchange for Dax's D) much like Chelsea tried to do after acquiring Torres.

But you're probably right, and it's actually probably best for Juan that you are.

Yeah - the MLS starters aren't as good as the EPL starters on a team like ManU but thats not the entire EPL. In any case, every EPL team out there DOES have far better subs. MLS still lacks any sort of quality depth on nearly every team. Sounders are probably one of the deeper teams too.

So will ESPN still have the MLS game of the week?

MannyIsGod
08-10-2011, 12:57 PM
ESPN will still have their games. FSC is losing theirs which are the ones NBC is picking up. I don't know how long the ESPN contract is for but I cannot see anyone out bidding them when the rights come up. In fact, I think FSC is going to be hard pressed to keep some of the rights they currently have from ESPN.

scott
08-10-2011, 01:54 PM
I'm torn on this because FSC is a vital cog of the growth of the sport in America and if their viability is threatened it will hurt the sport and take away our biggest outlet to watch EPL.

On the flip side, the way Fox treated the Champions League Final makes me feel that they should never be allowed to cover soccer unless its with their regular crew. ESPNSoccerChannel would be the tits because I'm always impressed by ABC/ESPN's ability to broadcast a game (even if they suck at covering it on SportsCenter) - especially the biggies.

ElNono
08-10-2011, 03:15 PM
Truth be told, I hated the FSC coverage. It was very Brit centered last I checked.

MannyIsGod
08-10-2011, 06:53 PM
I fucking HATE FSC. I know its comcasts fault but the fact I don't get it in HD and can't get it in HD really just pisses me off. I also think they do a fairly shitty job with the games they have and I do think without a doubt ESPN wants the rights to some of those leagues. ESPN has started showing quite a bit of EPL considering they don't have a dedicated soccer channel and I have extreme faith in their ability to pick up everything FSC has right now that I want to watch.

If things weren't bad enough in New York Red Bulls land, Rafa Marquez has gone and made them worse with his latest public comments.
Speaking through an interpreter after New York's dismal 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Marquez criticized his teammates, saying they were not on his level.
"I'm focusing on really performance at my highest level. That doesn't mean that the whole backline can perform at that same level, so that’s a problem," Marquez told the NYDailyNews.com (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/the_beautiful_blog/2011/09/red-bulls-rafa-marquez-goes-after-teammates-says-theyre-not-on-his-level). "I think this is a team game and unfortunately there isn't an equal level between my teammates and I."
Marquez, who was booed by fans at Red Bull Arena nearly every time he touched the ball on Wednesday, has come under much scrutiny in recent weeks as New York has won just one of its last 10 matches, leaving the Red Bulls on the outside of the playoff picture.
What do you think of Marquez's comments? Is he right?

MONTREAL IMPACT SIGN FORMER INTER MILAN DEFENDER RIVAS

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact have made former Inter Milan defender Nelson Rivas their first player under contract for the jump to Major League Soccer. :D

The 28-year-old Colombian joined Inter from River Plate in 2007 on a 7.5-million euros (C$10.5 million) transfer. He made 28 appearances for the Serie A side, helping the club to two Italian league titles.
He and Inter mutually agreed to end his contract on Aug. 31. He signed for two years plus an option year with Montreal.
Rivas was loaned to Italian club Livorno in 2009-10 and spent time on loan to Dnipro of Ukraine this year. His last game for Inter was Jan. 12 against Genoa in Italian Cup play.
Rivas said some European clubs showed interest in him, but he was lured to the Impact by the chance to be a key player on a new club.
"I talked to some compatriots about the league," Rivas said through a translator. "I know it's very physical and competitive and that it's a league that is becoming more important around the world."
Coach Jesse Marsch he was looking for a physical central defender. He said opposing players don't like to play against Rivas.
Sporting director Nick De Santis said Rivas was recommended by a contact in Europe and he had to move quickly to sign him.
Salary details were not announced. However, a team spokesman said he will not be a designated player, or one who is allowed to earn more than the league's salary cap for an individual player.
Montreal is set to join Major League Soccer in 2012, becoming the third Canadian team in the league after Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The Impact also hired former Seattle Sounder Preston Burpo as goalkeepers coach, bumping Youssef Dahha to coaching the keepers of the team's under-21 development squad.

It's LA's cup to lose. If any team was going to give LA a difficult time, it was going to be the Sounders. But we choked. RSL is a nice match up, but LA is way too talented to get beat by RSL. I see a 2-0 win or a 3-1 win for LA.

Would have been interesting to see how they would have been with a healthy Olave and Borchers. Hard when you're missing the heart of your D. That being said, the Beckham Magee combo has become quite deadly (ironic considering Magee is so short) and that corner was a thing of beauty. At that point the game was in the Galaxy's pocket (although if Espindola had managed that wondergol then it would have been VERY interesting - that strike was close to being INSANE).

I have a lot of respect for RSL. I love the way they play and I love their team. I'm a big Nick Rimando fan. The trio of the Sounders, RSL, and Galaxy have provided some damn good soccer all season long.

Adu, Convey, Ching left unprotected in MLS expansion draft, available for Impact

By Associated Press, Published: November 21

NEW YORK — Philadelphia forward Freddy Adu, San Jose All-Star defender Bobby Convey and Houston forward Brian Ching are among the players left unprotected in Major League Soccer’s expansion draft for the Montreal Impact on Wednesday.
Toronto midfielder Julian de Guzman, Houston forward Carlo Costly and New York midfielder John Rooney — the brother of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney — also were unprotected Monday, as were Washington midfielder Branko Boskovic and Vancouver forward Mustapha Jarju.

Also available are Philadelphia winger Justin Mapp, Salt Lake midfielder Andy Williams, Houston forward Carlo Costly and Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
Each of the 18 existing teams may protect 11 players. Homegrown young players don’t count against the limit, and high-priced designated players must be protected if they have no-trade provisions. Montreal will select 10.

Will be interesting to see who will be taken. Galaxy have a few players unprotected that I think the Impact should take. (Cardozo, Stephens, Birchall). None are amazing, but Stephens is a young player, Birchall is decent, and Cardozo shows flashes of being VERY good. Depends on what they want out of the draft, one of those should get taken.

The Impact is coached by Jesse Marsch (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fdynamo&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Jesse+Marsch%22), one of the U.S. national team assistant coaches on Bob Bradley (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fdynamo&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Bob+Bradley%22)'s staff when they decided to make Ching one of the last cuts from the team before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
To this day, Ching has said he'll never get over that snub, and now Marsch appears to have made the call that could send the Dynamo icon into retirement at least a year before the Hawaiian forward hoped.
On Tuesday, Ching made clear he didn't want to play for anyone other than Dominic Kinnear (http://www.chron.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=sports%2Fdynamo&search=1&inlineLink=1&query=%22Dominic+Kinnear%22). Moreover, Ching had his agent tell the Impact he wouldn't play for them or Marsch.
"I've pretty much played with Dom pretty much my entire professional career," Ching said Tuesday. "He's one of the big reasons why I've been successful. We have a great friendship. It goes beyond the field. I don't see myself playing for any other coach at this point in my career.
"I just know (Marsch) as a competitor on the field. He's a competitive guy. He's a guy that's been successful in the league. I have nothing against him, but I wouldn't play for him."

Impact trade for ricketts. They may put out a good team in year one.
