View Full Version : A great blurb about rigged officiating

My favorite Tommy Nunez story is from the 2007 playoffs when the San Antonio Spurs were able to get past the Phoenix Suns in the second round. Of course, what many fans didn't know was that Phoenix had someone working against them behind the scenes. Nunez was the group supervisor for that playoff series, and he definitely had a rooting interest.
Nunez loved the Hispanic community in San Antonio and had a lot of friends there. He had been a referee for 30 years and loved being on the road; in fact, he said that the whole reason he had become a group supervisor was to keep getting out of the house. So Nunez wanted to come back to San Antonio for the conference finals. Plus, he, like many other referees, disliked Suns owner Robert Sarver for the way he treated officials. Both of these things came into play when he prepared the referees for the games in the staff meetings. I remember laughing with him and saying, "You would love to keep coming back here." He was pointing out everything that Phoenix was able to get away with and never once told us to look for anything in regard to San Antonio. Nunez should have a championship ring on his finger.

Hopefully this season there will be a REAL NBA champion instead of this WWE shit that Stern keeps pulling with the Spurs. That is the only way integrity will be restored to the NBA.

Nunez definitely has a bias for the Spurs, it has been evident in a number of games..he's the anti-Joey Crawford..

Didnt Nunez try to help the Suns in game 4 of the 1997 1st round vs Seattle?

Wasnt he living in Phoenix back then ?

NBA is only rigged when the spurs don't win, tbh.

Wait, it's also rigged when they win, they simply have to win harder.

My bad.

There are only two teams David Stern EVER wants to see in the Finals, let alone win them, and I can guarantee you that one of their team colors is NOT black and silver. Conspiracy theories should have at least a plausible foundation reason. SA has some of the worst Finals ratings, giving Stern a reason to NOT fix series in SA's favor.

Kyle Orton

I guess it makes sense then that Stern isn't mentioned anywhere in a blurb about how Tommy Nunez rigged a series.

David Stern makes every NBA decision. Don't even think some peon ref supervisor has the juice to pull something like that off on his own.

TBH since SA is such a small market, it gives stern 0 zero to give them 2 number 1 HOF big picks tbh.

You do understand that the NBA does not run the ping pong balls, right? Ever since the Patrick Ewing stink, they have outsourced it to an accounting firm. The NBA has a representative in the room, but they control nothing about the draw.

You are right about one thing, though. The NBA has no interest in providing us with two HOF big men. Therefor, there is no hanky panky in the Spurs picks. The NBA would have been MUCH better off with DRob going to LA to replace Kareem

But if the NBA hates the small market spurs so much, why did stern fix 2007 against the bigger market suns?

makes no sense tbh.

Realistically, a single game can turn on maybe 5-6 calls. That 2003 Laker team was too old to have that number of calls help them. Stern will rarely go over the top, and learned his lesson from 2002.

I don't, honestly. But I'm guessing if you've got fans passionate enough to post on a board regularly about their team amongst similar-minded people, the pack mentality and consensus tends to take over.

Have a hard time believing any team that's had any kind of success and developed some sort of expectation from their fans doesn't have a board that wouldn't seem whiny or bitchass by an opposing fan/visitor to the board.

Nature of the beast.
