On a pure skillset and effort consideration, who would you rather have coming off the bench for the Spurs? Honestly...

03-21-2011, 02:17 PM
Neal cause he can score in any quarter......oh and his pay to productivity ratio is outstanding..

Calispursfan11
03-21-2011, 02:17 PM
Agreed, Neal makes barely 500k. Terry is 10 million plus. No comparison on pay/production ratio there.

In addition to the salary issue, Jason Terry is absolutely not clutch, he's known for playoff failures despite his bluster, he's seven years older than Gary Neal, and he's a thug. Apologies to the OP, but fail poll.

Obstructed, ouch. I agree it's Neal, but if you look at the overall stats, Terry is still an elite bench man. I don't agree that it's a hands down fail.

Is this a real question? Not only does Neal currently provide exponentially more value/dollar than Terry, he is also objectively worth a higher salary than Terry because for the most part Terry is trash.

Jet 16.3 ppg, 2 RPG, 4.2 APG

Neal 9.5 ppg, RPG 2.5, APG 1.1

I wasn't considering punk attitude as part of the analysis here. Simply, who would you rather have off the bench on a skill/hustle level. Stats are in favor of Jet.

Nope, sorry. See the bold.

If you aren't going to consider his punk attitude, then it's not realistic. Terry's a punk, and has been since he was in Atlanta. Shitload of talent? Yep. Hell of a shooter? Uh huh. Sixth man of the year? Absolutely. Would I trade them straight up even if Dallas paid his contract? Nope.

Did anyone checkout the on-ball defense Neal threw down on Barea in Friday's game?

Dribble penetration

Non media whore

This isn't even close. Gotta Neal with it.

Taking away the personality issues, Terry also is often their second offensive option while Neal (even with Pop's blessing to shoot) is never more than 3rd or fourth depending on who is in the game. The question is could Neal be as productive as Terry in the number two role? Possibly, but probably not.

But in the big picture Neal is younger, a better fit and cheaper so its easily Neal.

But, if you were to wave the money side the question becomes more difficult.

That said, Terry is an ass and I wouldn't want him on my team.

Terry is the textbook case why barking and woofing doesn't mean shit. If they tracked clutch fail to trash talk ratio, Terry would lead the league annually.

If Jason Terry existed with his stats, in a vacuum, I would say Terry. But alas, that is not the world we live in. In the real world, Terry has a horrible attitude and it shows in every facet of his being. His facial expressions, his consistantly dirty play, the way he runs his mouth in pre/post game interviews, etc. I wouldnt even have him on my bench.

Stats are in favor of Jet.

But HEART in favor of Neal. I have always been a Spurs fan and always will be but if the Spurs EVER signed Terry I think I would have to consider turning around and walking away from my beloved team. Now Nowitski I would welcome into the Spurs organization! That would bring us 2 or 3 more championships before Duncan hangs 'em up.

The charges were not dropped. He was sent to trial and was acquitted by a jury of his peers after the state prosecuted him. And he had a public defender. He didn't pay millions in hush money (i.e. Kobe), he was acquitted on the merits and put his life back together in a responsible way.

Dog Shit > Terry's shot selection

buttsR4rebounding
03-22-2011, 06:53 AM
Neal's game simply fits the Spurs better. The Spurs shoot the 3 point ball more than most teams. Neal is the the better 3 point shooter. Even though he has taken about half the total shots that Terry has this season--967 to 520--Neal has actually taken more 3's--293 to 257--and has hit a higher perctange as well. Neal is a slightly more effecient scorer, but that advantage would probably disappear if he increased his shot attempts.

I'm a huge fan of Neal, but come on guys. If we rule out their contracts and their ages, Terry selection is a no brainer. Neal is the most underpaid player of the league at the moment and that's why it's a confusing question when the salary parameter joins to comparision.

Would you surprise when Terry scores 30 in a play-off game? What about Neal? For this year, i would accept Terry; for future i wouldn't.

Reasonable analysis - I think if you put aside attitude, it may be close to a wash between Terry and Neal for this year. If you throw in potential, attitude, value for your money etc., then Neal is the clear choice. But if it came down to a playoff series, who would you want off the bench? It's not as clear cut. I think the poll results are reflecting a large amount of bias of Terry Haters.

Obstructed_View

Either that or it's reflecting Terry's track record in the playoffs.

Not really. Neal saved won game 5 for us with his big shot. Besides that I think Neal can shoot just as well from anywhere on the court, plus he can dribble in and put up his floater. I still think Neal has the most pure shot from any Spurs player in the last decade.
