This week Saudi tanks and 2,000 troops rolled into Bahrain to help the government quash the pro-democracy demonstrators. Saudi government forces fired on protesters from helicopters, tear-gassed them, and fired on ambulances deployed to help the injured.

These are the same folks we're helping out with, as the WSJ calls it, "the biggest arms deal in history."

White House to Notify Congress Soon of $60 Billion Package, Largest Ever for U.S. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704621204575488361149625050.html)

Part of this package includes training of the Royal Saudi Air Force pilots at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

A plan to train Saudi air force pilots in Idaho is turning former allies into bitter enemies. (http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/features/2011/03/2011316131230188238.html)

hahaha, I'm sure the folks in Idaho will be "thrilled". They already have a squadron of Singapore guys over there(they smelled AWFUL), I'm sure the people on base will be glad to have more "flavor" over there. Man...I'm so glad I got out.

Hatred of the West from that particular part of the world is ALL about our oppression of them. Probably has nothing to do with their religion.

WikiLeaks cables portray Saudi Arabia as a cash machine for terrorists (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/05/wikileaks-cables-saudi-terrorist-funding)

Saudi Arabia is the world's largest source of funds for Islamist militant groups such as the Afghan Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba – but the Saudi government is reluctant to stem the flow of money, according to Hillary Clinton.

The cables highlight an often ignored factor in the Pakistani and Afghan conflicts: that the violence is partly bankrolled by rich, conservative donors across the Arabian Sea whose governments do little to stop them.

The cables show that when it comes to powerful oil-rich allies US diplomats save their concerns for closed-door talks, in stark contrast to the often pointed criticism meted out to allies in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I had Saudi and UAE officers in my training classes in the mid 80's. It's funny that the higher ranking officers have less bling than the lower ones. You'd think a 1st level officer is a 4 star general.

A number are also accused of possessing child pornography, according to a defense official and the person familiar with the situation. The FBI and Justice Department declined to comment.

Why would the Federal Bureau of Matters need to be tight-lipped about that?
