there's some cell gurus in here right? I got ATT but there are 2 T-mobile towers closer to home than any ATT towers, so when am I going to start getting much better reception?

Well, I haven't seen any news on it, but the FCC, I think that's the department, has to approve it first. After that it should take about a year and I'd think they'd do it buy market-size. Not all at once.
IIRC, the ATT phones and Tmobile phones operate at different frequencies, so that is the hurdle.

It probably won't change. They probably already share each others towers.

No, the phones are capable of the same frequencies. They both use GSM, and the phones are full spectrum. They own different bandwidths within the allocated frequencies, but that does doesn't mean your free roaming doesn't work.
I'm with T-Mobile. Free roaming. No problems here.

Most likely this.
