Gig ‘em!

As predicted in yesterday’s Daily Six Shooter (http://bit.ly/gdX94m), the Texas A&M women’s basketball team finally knocked off the Baylor Lady Bears team that had beaten them three previous times this season and eight straight times overall. And what’s amazing about the effort is that Danielle Adams only scored six points and all were in the 2nd half. Adams was more of a big body down low, committing to the defensive end against the big Brittney Griner. As a result her offensive output suffered, but it all paid off and she seemed like the happiest person on the team after A&M won the biggest game in program history to get to their first ever Final Four.

Equally amazing is that the Aggies led the game wire to wire. It took Texas A&M a little more than five minutes to take a double-digit lead against a team that most (including Barack Obama) had penciled in to the championship game when the brackets came out.

Texas A&M was able to win this game because they turned it into a grind by being smart with their double-teams of Griner down low and forcing Baylor into 19 turnovers. Sydney Carter and Sydney Colson had eight of A&M’s 11 steals and it seemed like every one became easy layups on the other end and half of those fast break points were three-point plays that broke Baylor’s back each time. The Sydney girls combined for 34 points in a game where Baylor was held to their 2nd lowest point total of the season with 46 points.

Baylor will be back and will surely look to next season as a year of destiny with the women’s Final Four being held in Houston. As for Texas A&M, what helped them win this game against the Lady Bears might hurt them in their Final Four matchup against Stanford. Baylor was their championship game. Beating them was climbing the mountain. It was the biggest win in program history… but they still need to win two more games to win a national championship.

We’ll see how the Aggies handle this unprecedented success.
