Well it’s good to see that at least one Texas team will be going to the Final Four on the women’s side, but it’s yet another year where Texas is shut out of the men’s Final Four despite the Lone Star State hosting the Final Four and a regional.
I’ve talked about this on the website as well as in the magazine. I spent two years as a sports anchor in El Paso and went to many UTEP men’s basketball games. At the beginning of every game, the public address announcer says something along the lines of, “Welcome to the Don Haskins Center, home of the UTEP Miners, the only Division I men’s basketball championship in the state of Texas!” The crowd goes wild every time they hear that and I can’t blame them. As a guy that didn’t grow up in El Paso, but is a big fan of the sports history in Texas, I got chills every time I heard it too.
In my first year in El Paso, Don Haskins died and a prophecy was fulfilled. It had been said that no Texas men’s team would win a national championship as long as he was alive. And the last two seasons, it seemed like the Texas Longhorns might break through and finally win another one for the Lone Star State, but they’ve faded each year and the drought continues.
David Barron of the Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkc/men/7496858.html) did a good job of breaking down why the state of Texas hasn’t been able to win the big one.
