They applied for it. It came down to 2 finalists KC, KS and Topeka, KS. Topeka renamed the city Google to try to get it.... didn't work. There is some talk that Google may make a bid for Sprint and Sprint's corporate headquarters is in Overland Park, KS (suburb of KC) so those rumors are getting bolstered.
