Anonymous Declares War on Sony

Gulp! That's the collective reaction Sony likely had this morning after receiving a slap to the face from the hacker activist group famous for taking on the Church of Scientology, Anonymous. For its recent actions against PlayStation 3 hackers, including George "Geohot" Hotz, Anonymous has declared war on Sony.

Sony has been hunting anyone and everyone associated with exploiting the PlayStation 3's cracked security since Hotz released the console's root key to the masses back in January. And in the eyes of Anonymous, the company has gone too far.

"Your recent legal actions against fellow Internet citizens, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo, have been deemed an unforgivable offense against free speech and Internet freedom, primary sources of free lulz (and you know how we feel about lulz)," Anonymous stated through a press release on its AnonNews website.

"Now you will experience the wrath of Anonymous. You saw a hornets nest and stuck your penises in it. You must face the consequences of your actions, Anonymous style."

The group went on to inform Sony it has "only been renting" its web domains, just as PS3 owners have, based on Sony's actions, evidently only been renting the consoles they purchased. As such, Anonymous said it will now begin attacking Sony's private property.

:wow :lmao

Anonymous, it seems are doing this to show solidarity to this geohot guy. This geohot guy is being targeted by sony for getting his hardware to do what he wanted (and thereby making it more valueable), then sharing his work with others.

They do it for themselves and pretend it's for the better of the people.

If it was done for us, there wouldn't be viruses and trojans and all sorts of malware infesting computers and shutting them down. We wouldn't have to worry about protecting our identities and losing money from our bank accounts. We wouldn't need ridiculous amounts of internet security just to make sure our investments (our PCs) stay clean and operable.

The fact that you believe such utter bullshit says a lot about yourself.

If I recall correctly, he was modifying the software, which should be protected by copyright laws, although I don't claim to be a lawyer by any stretch of the imagination and could be totally wrong. I think it could lead to software piracy (games and whatnot) which is illegal.

Again, I'd have to go back and read the article outlining what his work actually did, but I seem to remember that that's what that was all about.

Having said that, Apple, Google, Motorola and Sony are all doing this sort of thing with their devices, so is this guy going to attack them all. By doing so, he'd basically be declaring war on the consumer as his attacks will surely be passed down to the user either with an interruption of service or by rendering the devices inoperable in some capacity.

But whatever, I mean, he's trying to protect us, right?

You might think so but it's all about the whole piracy war.. while it does help their ego, I highly doubt they risk that much just so they can say they can do it...

Getting praised for it might be another reason they do it.. it's how they get "famous"...

You show your ignorance by naming "Anonymous" as one person as well as thinking all hackers are "out to get you".

The whole point, regardless of what a copyright might have you believe, is that when you purchase a piece of property, its yours to do with what you will. It's not rented or leased. It's YOURS.

This is akin to any motor vehicle company going after you for adding performance parts to the car you bought.

As for services being interupted for consumers, thats on Sony's head and anyone not addicted to Everquest and DC universe, which both suck ass I might add, can see how Sony has brought this on themselves.

Unfortunately, in the digital domain, and thanks to laws like the DMCA that's not really the case. You're granted a 'license' to use the software. You're also agreeing to use the hardware with said software or you have to return it.

People don't read the fine print, but there's a lot of bullshit there. It's a really fucked up system we're living in these days.

Nathan,

Contrary to what the media and movies would have you believe, hackers are not the ones creating viruses and malware. They are not out for money or to steal your identity. Hackers hack to learn. They are more interested in the workings of a computer and the challenge of its security.

The few hundred dollars in your account, or that e-mail that proves you cheated on your wife, or that porn folder you have collected video's in for a decade doesnt matter to them.

The people you are refering to about creating viruses and malware are exactly the type of people Anonymous are against.... As well as those companies like Sony who are complete Zealots who will do anything to make sure they control your dollar.

Such as? A lot of consumer laws are getting obliterated with superimposed loopholes. I didn't bring the DMCA lightly.

Consumers were allowed to make personal copies. By encrypting the originals, that right was lost under the DMCA, which criminalizes circumventing the encryption, and has no exceptions for personal copies.

Contract law has a very long precedent. When you willfully agree to waive certain rights, there's normally very small recourse. Half the people that buy things like the PS3, don't even know what they're agreeing to. And that's the problem.

agreed.

Still, the heart of this issue is that Sony is trying to prevent people from doing what they want with property that they rightfully own.

What those people do with the knowledge is an entirely different manner.

For instance, there are people building supercomputers based off of PS3's, which is not what they where intended for, but I dont see Sony going after them....

As much as I dont like Microsoft, they did it right... just disable those systems so they no longer can access PSN and be done with it. Same as with a car... if you modify it, you void the warranty. You dont go to jail for it.

No such thing as 'property that they rightfully own'. I doubt you've read the Sony's TOS included with the console?
Nobody can stop you from doing whatever you want in the privacy of your home for personal use. Distributing that information is more complicated though.

What those people do with the knowledge is an entirely different manner.

I agree that the onus is on Sony to prove that the guy hacked the console with the intent to bypass rights management.

For instance, there are people building supercomputers based off of PS3's, which is not what they where intended for, but I dont see Sony going after them....

You don't know that they didn't get a license from Sony for doing that though. I mean, Sony did include Other OS exceptions for the fat PS3, until they removed the option with a later software update.

As much as I dont like Microsoft, they did it right... just disable those systems so they no longer can access PSN and be done with it. Same as with a car... if you modify it, you void the warranty. You dont go to jail for it.

Microsoft actively pursues hackers, and has had the FBI investigate and prosecute: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/12/crippen-dismissed/

Different companies have different approaches though. Some are willing to work with who they might consider brilliant instead of suing them if they feel they'll reap more rewards that way.

PSN made Foxnews:

Sony Corp. was trying to determine Monday whether users' credit card numbers or other personal information had been compromised as the outage of its global PlayStation Network entered a sixth day, PC World reported.

The company confirmed that an "external intrusion" by hackers disrupted the service, affecting more than 75 million users worldwide who use it to play video games against friends online, stream movies and shop online.

Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said the company was conducting a "thorough investigation" into the outage, which began April 20.

He said Sony did not yet know if users' credit card information or other personal information had been compromised in the attack, but the company would immediately inform users if it had.

A posting on the official PlayStation blog Monday by Patrick Seybold, Sony senior director of corporate communications and social media, gave no indication when PlayStation Network service might return.

"Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time," Seybold wrote. "We'll keep you updated with information as it becomes available."

Seybold said late Saturday that Sony was completely rebuilding its systems to strengthen its network infrastructure.

Players can still play games offline, but are unable to challenge others over the internet, one of the console's key features.

Hacker group Anonymous was originally suspected of causing the disruption as it had previously vowed retribution against the Japanese electronics giant after it took legal action two hackers.

However, in a message on its website Friday, titled "For Once We Didn't Do It," the group denied responsibility, saying that while it was possible that individual hackers had targeted the network, Sony was not an official target.

Sony releases a statement:

Update on PlayStation Network and Qriocity

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

Sony PS Network shut down "indefinitely" following attack

This is a massive hit to their PR. That's what you get for messing with hackers...

Damn right Microsoft's jizzing right now. Just think of all the purchases people have made on XBOX Live in the past week and the zero purchases on PSN. I wonder how much money Sony has lost since the PSN shutdown? XBOX Live might cost money to use but when it comes to online content, it beats the shit out of PSN in my opinion.

It could easily happen to them too, it's not like they could do much if this or any other serious group chose to take them down.

I'd rather not pay shit and deal with this every once in a while, I just hate that I had to cancel my card and get a new one, which was painless anyways.

I just feel bad for the PS+ users that pay a fee to have rewards and such. Those people should get something free imho

I agree with this....

Just to give some more insight on whats really happening though...

It appears a recently released custom firmware called Rebug may be the culprit.

It basically allows people to turn their PS3's into a dev console. A different group of users, supposedly not Anonymous, used the firmware to access the developer networks and found out that while using the dev kit, the PSN networks does not check on credit card info.... leading to large ammounts of piracy through PSN.....

This is supposedly the main reason they shut it down.

Im inclined to believe this scenario.... no way a crude DDoS that Anonymous would have done would have caused this extreme of an outage.

Yeah, but, but, Sony deserved it. In everyone's attempt to justify this as Sony "deserving it" they overlooked the fact that the users could be the ones that get fucked, as we finally find out (officially) that credit card numbers and personal information was stolen.

Sony deserves the class action lawsuit that's surely coming their way for failing to secure their network, period. If you're one of the suckers that deposited your info with them, then the responsibility is entirely yours.

This doesn't apply just to Sony. Anybody that knows their salt will tell you not to store purchasing information with any vendor. That goes for Apple, Amazon, etc. I personally use one time transactions declining the option to store my info or simply purchase and use gift certificates.

I do something kinda similar to this. My direct deposit through work is linked to savings, not checking (don't own a credit card), and the debit card/checking account is set up so it won't allow overdrafts. If, God forbid, my debit card info got stolen, whoever did it has a whopping 5 dollars and change, to play with.

Because Sony didn't do due diligence and protect their network. Sony was f'ing stupid.

Them deserving of embarrassment doesn't mean people deserve to have their info stolen.

How would that have given them access to customer data though?

And if Sony is saying customer data got stolen as a smokescreen, then they're fucking retarded. It would make MUCH more sense to accept the few pirates and try to track them down, then tell everyone that their info got stolen.

Is putting credit card info on PSN mandatory? I can't remember if I did, but I've never bought anything on PSN nor do I even use the gaming network.

I'm guessing if I did it was almost 2 years ago with an expired CC.

IIRC, and admittedly this was about 18 months ago for me, it wasn't mandatory. I believe it gives you the option to set up a default account for PSN purchases when you register but you can simply opt to set it up later. Was thinking about getting a couple of the PS1 classics for a change of pace over the summer. Gonna have to think long and hard about that now, that's for sure.
