View Full Version : If you're Pop, what's your plan tomorrow against the Lakers?

If I'm him, I play the starters no more than 15 minutes and let the bench get some burn. Overall homecourt is not important at this point, because the Lakers, not the Bulls, are the more immediate threat, and the last thing I want to do is give the Lakers confidence after the 0 and Fiver. By keeping the starters on a short leash, the Lakers gain nothing more than a empty win, other than ostensibly securing the 2nd seed.

If the Lakers beat a motivated Spurs team with the starters playing heavy minutes, the 0 and Fiver might as well have never happened, and the Lakers have renewed momentum going into the playoffs.

Pop needs to go into mind game mode and take the importance of this game out of the equation and tank it. Nothing to play for, really.

If you're going to play them only 15 minutes then you might as well sit the Big 3 out.

What's the point of risking injury during those 15 minutes if you plan to pull them by halftime anyways?

True. Point is, Pop should just tank this game. Funny thing is, with the way the 0 and Five squad has been playing, the Spurs bench just might pull it out.:lol.

Going balls out in this game is a lose-lose proposition, and I hope Pop realizes it.

I would think you would want to win and give the Mavs homecourt against the Lakers. Personally, I dont really care about the home court other than in the Finals and we blew that already.

One week were back and unbeatable and have opposing teams fans melting down and comming up with all kinds of jinxes, bets, and backpeddling stunts. The next, were easily beatable. Go figure. I just stay the course.

I still think the Lakers will rep the West in the Finals. That frontline is simply too big and good, which is exactly why you don't want them having any kind of confidence entering the playoffs.

And my bet jinx is working perfectly so far. 0 and 5 since.

Sure it is.

If your confidence, at that level, is swayed by any one game or two, you need to find a new profession. The Lakers do not lack confidence. It's all a matter of motivation and of course execution.

right now Dallas has a 0,5 game lead over LA. I don't know what would I prefer... rest our starters the next 2 games, or play them RS minutes against LA, and see what happens.

If we beat them tonight, we can send them to the 3rd place (they will beat SAC for sure), and make it difficult for them since the 2nd round playing dallas without HCA (I know it's the choking mavs, but who knows, maybe if they have HCA against LA they will make things harder for the lakers).

If I were Pop, I would play Tim, Manu and Tony normal minutes until the half, and if we are down like 15 or so tank the game

The off chance of both the Spurs and Bulls making it to the finals isn't enough to get excited about. The Spurs purposely bombed the last game against Dallas last year even though they had an opportunity to much up in seeding. Why would they go balls out this year when home court is already locked up?

I think Pop will go for the win. He wants the players to be sharp and in playoff form going into the first round. At this point there's no reason to sit guys out because you're worried about injuries. Pop has spent the entire season managing minutes and handling the players with kid gloves. It's time for them to get in shape for big playoff minutes.

Based on previous years, I believe Pop will not do anything out of the ordinary for this game. He will play the entire team as any other regular game - if the Spurs are getting blown out mid 3rd Q he will just bench the starters and play the rest of the game with subs.

By doing this he will keep to what he's always done in similar situations, that is giving more time to the subs and saving the starters from unnecessary effort.

However, if the Spurs are close or up in the 4th Q he will attempt to win the game as any other game.

Lakers will try to send "a message" (what a stupid word), etc.

I know this is just plain boring but I'm pretty sure this is what we are going to see tonight.

...As of this morning’s shootaround at Santa Monica College, Popovich still didn’t have a definitive answer.

“We’re trying to figure that out right now, to see what might be best for us,” Popovich said after the walk-through. “We change our minds like every 10 minutes. Hopefully, by the time we get to the arena, we’ll know what the heck we’re doing.”

I'm not Pop, but all the Spurs need is a split in their last two game and then it's at worst a random drawing for HCA against Chicago (tiebreaks are even, right?); if that series happens. Chicago still has to play 2 games as well.

As far as giving LA momentum, even if both teams play to win with normal minutes for starters, one team has to lose. Then the victim thinks of payback, in the playoffs. Example, if Spurs and Heat play in finals, neither team wants to lose by 30 on the road again, and that's why each will win a game, at least, on the road.

Too bad it was scheduled for now. It would have been great right before or after the Lakers/Mavs game. Then again, maybe even earlier, before Lakers got on win streak and Spurs started losing streak.

Daddy_Of_All_Trolls
04-12-2011, 04:35 PM
Oh, I saw recently somewhere the Lakers have staggered ticket prices for home games. The better the opponent, the more the tickets cost. I'd hate to shell out big bucks for this to see Tim, Manu, and Tony sit on the bench, and I'd really be pissed if they didn't make the plane trip or sat in the lockerroom. In Major League baseball, if you go to a game after about September 15 and both teams are out of the pennant race, you can usually expect to see nothing but minor league prospects who were just called up to play. Only thing good about that is you may see a future superstar when he was 19 or 20. you just won't know it yet.

DMC
04-12-2011, 04:39 PM
My plan, if I am Pop, is to get Matt involved early. He needs minutes. He's only been in the league a few years. He stretches the floor as well. I would not play Tiago unless the game is out of reach one way or the other, because his faux points and rebounds are annoying my facial blemishes.

What the hell are you talking about? As if it's even possible for the Lakers to gain more confidence, especially against the Spurs. Don't kid yourself, this is not about rest. This is the last team that needs rest, seeing as how they're the most rested playoff team far and away. This is about Pop being terrified of the Lakers and having no confidence in his team. Why else would he risk handing away home court in the Finals (which is particularly huge because of the format), especially when his team has had it in their grasp virtually the entire season?

And this notion about "avoiding the Lakers until the Conference Finals". Who the hell cares? The Mavs, their likely 2nd round opponent, aren't capable of beating them. Guess what that means? If the Spurs have designs on returning to the Finals, they'll have to go through the Lakers anyway. So why does it matter when they do it? How about stop acting like a bunch of scared little bitches and instead of running from the Lakers, running through them?

LkrFan
04-12-2011, 09:58 PM
Pop is making a mistake in not playing TD/TP/Beak. I understand you guys don't have anything to play for. I also understand that he wants to get some experience for his bench against the Lakers because he will need them if they meet in the playoffs. Problem with all of that is there is no way this Spurs bench will beat the Lakers. The Lakers are not rolling offensively. This game could take the lid off the basket for the Lakers per se. Why not kick them when they are down (if they win)? Despite the 5 game losing streak, sans about 3 games, the Lakers' defense has been there since the ASB.

This move will come back to bite Pop in the ass.
