Chicago school bans some lunches brought from home
To encourage healthful eating, Chicago school doesn't allow kids to bring lunches or certain snacks from home — and some parents, and many students, aren't fans of the policy


A Little Village Academy student cringes at an enchilada dish served at his school. Many students throw away their entrees uneaten and say they would rather bring food from home. The school, though, does not allow students to bring in their own lunches, unless they have a medical condition or a food allergy. (Monica Eng, Chicago Tribune / February 17, 2011)

Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

"Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?" the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: "We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!"

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: "Do you see the situation?"

What you don't see is Dad smacking Fernando later on because he gets his school lunch at free or reduced price and a sack lunch would cost him $3 per day...STFU and eat your enchiladas, Boy!

I'm of the mindset that if something doesn't taste right or you don't like it, don't eat it. That applies to food and pussy. But I digress, this is about parents not having the choice to send their kids to school with certain foods...that's just dumb for a public school, but this seems like a private institution? I think so. I remember at my private school they asked us not to drink sodas INSIDE it, but we had a soda machine right outside the entrance. Wierd. Whatever, school policy is school policy, and if you are paying tuition to a school with a stupid policy...stop paying.

What are you talking about? I thought all those "ideals" and such were all retroactively added to textbooks to create a proper national myth with which to govern. At least that's what my Liberal professors told me!

I can not help but wonder if this all started with some parent- some parent whose kid whined that some other kid had cookies in his lunch or that some kid gave another kid something out of his lunch that the parent did not want the kid to have. I only think this because of what happened when my kid was in kinder. I helped plan the parties, and I called a mom who volunteered to help with refreshments. I asked her if she would bring some drink boxes and I got a lecture on how kids should not be drinking those. She told me that her daughter is only allowed to drink 100% fruit juice. So, I told her that she was more than welcome to bring some juice boxes that were pure juice, and then they would be available for her child and any other child who liked juice better or whose parents wanted him or her to have pure juice. That was not enough for her. She acted as if I was going to ban drink boxes from the party because she did not want any of the kids to have one!! Another mom was the anti-sweets mom who swore her child was not allowed cookies, cupcakes... We also always had fruit and things like that at the parties, as well. Well, I watched her kid sneak 4 huge cookies when the mom was not looking probably because she made such a big deal about banning them!

Tell the former mom that she can buy Fruitables Juice boxes. 1/3 less sugar than other juice boxes, and 1 combined serving of fruit/veggies per juice box. Its what I buy my kids for school lunches, or when we go hiking/to the park, etc. (we don't use the boxes at home).

edit: oh and I doubt that this was the reason why. It was probably another futile attempt to get the kids to lose weight. None of these ideas will work unless the parents are on board... and they won't ever be.
