Popping a bottle of some cheap-ass glengoyne single malt to celebrate the end of another Laker Dynasty. It was fun, but all good things must come to an end. Unless Howard and a decent PG come here soon, we're looking at the 1990s again imo.

Fuck it, they've won enough to last a lifetime. Time to move on to my shitty baseball team

3 straight title appearances, 2 wins...what constitutes a dynasty anymore? Whatever, it's over. Hopefully Mitch pulls miracles but our run is up.

crofl why are Laker fans jumping off a bridge all of a sudden?

Just because LA actually has to fight to get out of the WC for once, doesn't mean they're done. Who out there are they totally incapable of beating in a 7 game series?

With a limited/no Bynum? OKC for starters...

Yup, pretty much...delaying the inevitable. Sacto will rape us tomorrow and we'll be stuck at 3rd seed...meaning the Lakers would have to play Portland in the first round, then go on 3 straight series w/o HCA to win it all with little to no Bynum. It's over. Start drinking and enjoy the memories.

The worst thing for the Lakers is that you have no young talent in the pipeline, AND you're cap fucked for like 3 years. Your best young player can go about 60 games and 28 minutes per game, and then he still seems to break down. Your only other under 30 rotation player is Shannon Brown, and he plays like 12-15 minutes.

Dynasty

A dynasty is a sequence of rulers considered members of the same family. Historians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historian) traditionally consider many sovereign states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_state)' history within a framework of successive dynasties, e.g., China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China), Ancient Egypt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egypt) and the Persian Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Empire). Much of European (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) political history is dominated by dynasties such as the Carolingians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolingian), the Capetians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capetian_dynasty), the Habsburgs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg), the Stuarts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Stuart), the Hohenzollerns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohenzollern) and the Romanovs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanovs). Until the 19th century, it was taken for granted that a legitimate function of a monarch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch) was to aggrandize his dynasty, that is, to increase the territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territory_%28administrative_division%29), wealth and power of family members.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasty#cite_note-0)
A dynasty is also often called a house (e.g., House of Saud (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Saud) and House of Windsor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Windsor)), and may be described as imperial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire), royal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_house), ducal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke) or comital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count) depending upon the chief title borne by its rulers. Dynasty is also used to refer to the era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Era) during which a family reigned (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reign), as well as events, trends and artifacts of that period (e.g. "Ming dynasty vase"). In such cases, often "dynasty" is dropped, while the name is used adjectively; e.g., Tudor style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tudor_Style_architecture), Ottoman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Dynasty) expansion, Romanov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanov) decadence, etc.
While contemporary English includes references to an array of prominent or influential families as dynasties, in much of the world, dynasty has been associated with monarchy and defined patrilineally (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrilineality). Kinship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinship) and inheritance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance) were predominantly viewed and legally calculated through descent from a common ancestor in the male line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnatic_succession). However, men descended from a dynasty through females have sometimes adopted the name of that dynasty while claiming its position or inheritance (e.g., House of Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Orange), House of Bagration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagrationi_dynasty), House of Habsburg-Lorraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Hapsburg)).

[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dynasty&action=edit&section=1)] Dynasts

A ruler in a dynasty is sometimes referred to as a dynast, but this term is also used to describe any member of a reigning family who retains succession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_succession) rights to a throne. For example, following his abdication, Edward VIII of the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_VIII_of_the_United_Kingdom) ceased to be a dynastic member of the House of Windsor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Windsor).
A "dynastic marriage" is one that complies with monarchical house law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_law) restrictions, so that the descendants are eligible to inherit the throne and/or other royal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy) privileges. For instance, the 2002 marriage of Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem-Alexander,_Prince_of_Orange) to Mαxima Zorreguieta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1xima_Zorreguieta) was dynastic, and their eldest child (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Catharina-Amalia_of_the_Netherlands) is expected to eventually inherit the Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) crown. But the marriage of his younger brother Prince Friso (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Friso_of_Orange-Nassau) to Mabel Wisse Smit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabel_Wisse_Smit) in 2003 lacked government support and parliamentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamentary) approval. Thus Friso forfeited his place in the order of succession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_succession), lost his title as a Prince of the Netherlands, and his children have no dynastic rights.
In historical and monarchist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy) references to formerly reigning families, dynastic describes a family member who would have succession rights if the monarchy's rules were still in force. For example, after the 1914 assassinations of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand_of_Austria) and his morganatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morganatic_marriage) wife Sophie von Hohenberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie,_Duchess_of_Hohenberg), their son Max (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilian,_Duke_of_Hohenberg) was bypassed for the Austrian throne because he was not a Habsburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg) dynast. Even since abolition of the Austrian monarchy, Max and his descendants have not been considered the rightful pretenders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretender) by Austrian monarchists, nor have they claimed that position.
The term "dynast" is sometimes used to refer to agnatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrilineality) descendants of a realm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realm)'s monarchs, and sometimes to those who hold succession rights through cognatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrilineality) royal descent. The term can therefore describe overlapping but distinct sets of people. For example, David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Armstrong-Jones,_Viscount_Linley), a nephew of Queen Elizabeth II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II_of_the_United_Kingdom) through her sister, Princess Margaret (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Margaret_of_the_United_Kingdom), is in the line of succession to the British crown: in that sense is a British dynast. Yet he is not a male-line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrilineality) member of the royal family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_family), and is therefore not a dynast of the House of Windsor.
On the other hand, the German aristocrat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristocracy) Ernst August, Prince of Hanover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_August_V,_Prince_of_Hanover) (born 1954), a male-line descendant of George III of the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_III_of_the_United_Kingdom), possesses no legal British name, titles or styles (although he is entitled to re-claim the once-royal dukedom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke#Royal_dukes) of Cumberland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_of_Cumberland)), was born in the line of succession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_succession) to the British crown and is bound by Britain's Royal Marriages Act 1772 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Marriages_Act_1772). Thus, in 1999 he requested and obtained formal permission from Elizabeth II to marry the Roman Catholic Princess Caroline of Monaco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline,_Princess_of_Hanover). But immediately upon marriage he forfeited his right to the British throne because the English Act of Settlement 1701 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_Settlement_1701) dictates that dynasts who marry Roman Catholics are considered "dead" for the purpose of succession. However, the couple's daughter, Princess Alexandra of Hanover (born 1999), remains a legal dynast of both the United Kingdom and Monaco[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)], not to mention her father's claim to dynasticity as pretender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretender) to the former royal crown of Hanover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Hanover).

Main article: Political families of the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_families_of_the_world)
Though in elected governments rule does not pass automatically by inheritance, political power often accrues to generations of related individuals even in Republics. Eminence, Influence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_influence), familiarity, tradition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradition), genetics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetics), and even nepotism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepotism) may contribute to this phenomenon.
Family dictatorships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_dictatorship) are a slightly different concept, where political power passes within a family due to the overwhelming authority of the leader, rather than informal power accrued to the family.
Some political dynasties:

The Beazley and Crean families (Australian Labor Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Labor_Party))
Ziaur Rahman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziaur_Rahman)'s and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheikh_Mujibur_Rahman)'s families (Bangladesh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh))

No more Phil Jackson either :corn:

It'll be interesting to see how the older teams in the West will handle the likely shortened season next year as well....

I called this about 3 weeks ago. I just don't see Sacto losing what will most likely be their final game in NoCal against the hated Lakers. With that said this is the Kings we're talking about. They can lose to a JV high school team on any given day.

Question: If Celt's wins tomorrow and Lakers lose who has home court?

Too many variables working against them this postseason MD, or I'd agree with you. In all likelihood the Lakers are going to lose tomorrow night, and Dallas will probably beat NOH at home.

Bynum--although a welcome sight in any capacity--always plays a little more passively and reluctant when coming off an injury (like he's afraid to reinjure it again).

This means LA will draw Portland in the first round (nightmare matchup that could push us to 7), followed by a road series at Dallas (assuming they dont choke against memphis), then a WCF against either the Spurs (who have HCA) or the Thunder (who are insanely good). Say LA manages to get through all that---they then would get Miami on the road for the NBA Finals.

It's a recipe for disaster. A win tomorrow would be huge, but I just don't see it. Demarcus Cousins will go off for 28 and 12

Keeping cool when put in a tight spot is how you separate em out. Kid Kobe had the stones to step up and follow his convictions; 5 rings later we reap the fields with the gifts of his labor. I'll follow his lead and stay true to the cause, there hasn't been one better since his initiation into the Forum Blue.

Yup, and i'll be pulling for them harder than any other Laker fan, but sooner or later realism needs to be valued over homerism.

I hedge my bets so I end up a winner on either outcome. If the Lakers 3-peat, then SWEET. Lakaluva can happily have my 2 bills. If the Lakers lose, that would suck, but at least I'd have insurance on the impending grief

Pessimism is more fun, because you expect nothing...but if/when they win it's unexpected and euphoric, and not just the ho-hum of the "well, we were supposed to win anyway," attitude.

I hope your right, but I'm just not seeing it. Tomorrow will be the biggest indicator of where we stand as far as 3-peat chances go:

1. Securing the #2 seed

2. Bynum's MRI/X-rays/blah blah blah

If both those factors yield positive results then maybe I won't be as pessimistic...but i'm not counting on it.

How long have you been a Laker fan? Must be decades by now...yet you still don't get it...Nobody, no team is infallible. Age and injuries catch up with everybody.
Moreso you have many years of watching NBA basketball under your belt as well and should know that Kobe's volume shooting makes the offense stagnant, predictable, and his long bricks create easy buckets against our notoriously weak transition defense. The Lakers are unbeatable (when healthy), and the offense is run inside-out and not vice-versa.

You should know better, especially for someone who's supposedly watched the game for years. LA could get by on chuckball before because we were head and shoulders above every team talent-wise. That is no longer the case. We're all Laker fans...just because I have a dissenting opinion or a bad feeling it doesn't mean I like the lakers any less--it means that I have legit concerns and that I care about my team's future. It's called realism, and you should be well acquainted with that by now. Bury your head in the sand if that suits you

You're eloquent prose is touching, but it has nothing to do with the situation at hand. The Lakers were the overwhelming favorites the last two years--and outside of the 2010 Finals--nobody was in their class. Nothing lasts forever, 2003 should've spelled that out to you clearly, if 89-91 hadn't already. If Bynum is injured and we drop to #3 we are fucked, plain and simple.

Please can the poetic "Bryant's tormented demeanor" crap. Deal with the FACTS. LA is likely to face an uphill battle the likes of which they've never come across, with key personnel injured.

This isn't 2009 or 2010, so stop alluding to those years like they were monster obstacles the Lakers had to overcome. 2011 is a different animal, and if you're too blind to see that then you are utter, ignorant shit.

Good night, and wake up in the real world tomorrow please.

Wow, a Laker fan who actually gets it. Kudos to you, DD. I'm being totally serious, my day is brightened by your candor. I've lived in LA for over ten years now, and I've met maybe three or four Laker fans who would admit what you said (above). And it's the absolute truth.

I watch a lot of Laker games for the sole purpose of perhaps seeing K. Bryant lose. It's amazing how hard he makes things on your team by his constant chucking and mindbendingly selfish play. For someone like myself who grew up in North Carolina and learned the game from Dean Smith disciples, it's actually hard to watch.

Does anybody ever have fun playing with Bryant? His teammates act like they'd rather be at the dentist than on the court with him. We all know he's a prime A-hole, but their distaste for him - especially as his skills decline and his fingerpointing increases - is glaringly obvious, and completely warranted.

I can respect that. I however chose that path in the 2008 Finals and it made me utterly miserable all summer (seriously, nothing is worse than losing to the Celtics in the finals). The last 2 years I bet for the Lakers in the playoffs because I had no doubts they were the best. This year however, I don't want that sickening feeling w/o at least some money to help alleviate the pain. Besides, I bet against the Lakers all the time in the regular season (spreads) and I make a killing off them. That's why I'm hedging this year...if I lose my $$, GREAT, cause that mans LA has won. If I win, then it eases the burden of defeat and affords me a few more bar tabs.

Good night.

Lol deadly, just who the hell out of the west Is gonna keep the lakers from the finals? I'll tell you the 2 seed sure doesn't have a chance, and I'd shit myself if the 1 seed does. It's between you and either the bulls or the heat.

If Bynum is limited or a no-go, take your pick, m>s....Even if he's healthy OKC worries me. Anybody else out West is a non-issue IF Drew is healthy. The EC is a whole different animal altogether.

Although I don't share the level of disdain you do for Kobe, I think he would be much more valuable to the Lakers as a facilitator than a volume shooter at this point in his career. He could be lethal if he operated within the triangle. Nobody could touch LA then. I still want him taking our clutch shots though.

Few thoughts

A) Lakers are still in the inferior Conference. I rather face Dallas than Chicago, Miami, Boston or Orlando. Dallas = Atlanta

B) Not buying the ''Dynasty over'' cries. Since when did the Lakers build their Dynasty through anything else but ABSURD trades (Kareem & Gasol) or FA money grabs (Shaq, Artest, Fisher)

I have yet to see Stern stand up to the Lakers franchise and make the league a level playing field (2002 WCF, 2010 Finals & Gasol trade) so I expect things to continue as usual.

Lastly I find it hard to cry when without the ABSURD Pao trade the Lakers would be lucky to be the Blazers the past 5 years. Keep in mind Grizzlies w/Gasol had a better record the 4 seasons before the trade than LA. Honestly without the KG injury in 2009 and 20 extra free throws in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals, Kobe would still be searching for his 1st post Shaq ring

So please cry somewhere else Laker fan. The amount of breaks and bullshit your franchise has inherited in recent history is nauseating.

By clutch shots I mean clutch fourth quarter baskets, or momentum killing runs from opponents. It's absolutely sickening to watch the first quarter/half boxscore of every game, where Kobe has close to 10+ FGA while our 2 bigs (who offer complete mismatches on the block) combine for 6-8 FGAs. Feed the bigs, build their confidence, get the opponents bigs in foul trouble early, and wreak havoc on our most valuable advantage: Our frontcourt.

Almost everytime Kobe shoots over 20-25 FGA you know the Lakers are probably fucked.

For fucksake Laker fan forgets their own history..."hey well things are working smoothly just like the last few years, so why change anything?" That's the mentality they had going into the 02-03 season, resting on their laurels and thinking their shit didn't stink.

and don't get me started on Phil...that motherfucker has turned into Walter Kurtz. His mind just wanders off into the ether during games and his thoughts are not on the game itself. After this year he and his devote zen followers should all just go to his ranch in Montana where they can decapitate the natives and worship his holiness.

Sorry to break it to you but Phil hasn't coached since MJ returned from baseball back in 1994.

All he's done in violet & yellow is sit around all regular season and muscle refs into into ridiculous calls come playoff time (2002 WCF & 2010 Finals for reference) by flashing Jordan's rings

LA is fortunate enough that they survived 3 finals/2 titles with such an injury prone Bynum. They are certainly contenders still, but should they be forced to play in the order you believe (Spurs in the WCF), I highly doubt they will have the juice to beat both the Spurs and whomever makes the Finals (Heat/C's/Bulls will all be extremely formidable after such a long playoffs).

Spurs will be just as hard pressed to beat an LA team and also win the Finals, tbh. Just sit back and enjoy the ride - that's the best part about not being the overwhelming Favorite. You don't take your wins for granted, and every game feels like it could go either way. That's the real fun of watching the NBA playoffs.

:td Weak dawg. The Lakers will win this shit, with or without Bynum.

They have enough to win it without bynum. Defense wont be as tough but the offense will pick up. They already went to the finals without bynum and this team is better. All they need is a few good minutes from Ratliff. He's a veteran, i think he can give it to them . In the playoffs the game will slow down so he should be able to give them a couple of good minutes.

The Lakers would Beat the Thunder in a 7 game series. Artest will lock up Durant, Westbrook will shoot them out a game or two and choke. Perkins will stay in foul trouble and the inexperience Thunder will look to perkins for leadership. Problem is that Perkins sucks on offense. He can't lead that team anywhere. It has to be Durant but Artest can rough him up and frustrate him and he will.

Denver will self destruct like they always do.

All of the other western conference teams are easily beatable without Bynum.

Its even better when they get to the east. The Celtics aren't as physical In the paint anymore. That allows Gasol to get into the game. The Celtics were able to take him out the game when they won the ship.
No other team in the east is physical enough to take the lakers out their game except maybe the Bulls. They Bulls will succumb to the pressure of the championship and depend on Rose to do too much scoring and he'll come up short. Lakers in 6

The Lakers own the playoffs. They win in the playoffs better than any team in the history of the NBA. Bynum was not on those teams either. Sucks he got hurt and hopefully he wont be out for the playoffs but even if he is, I'm calling it right now. The Lakers will 3peat with or without Bynum. Book It!

Round for applause for Lakeshow

It would take a 2002 WCF kind of reffing for the Lakers to pull this off. Fisher & Artest blow, Gasol always gets exposed without Bynum to fall back on, Odom always disappears on the road and Kobe looks like a 32 year old Iverson

Only Stern can save the Lakers now, then again it wouldn't be the first time (4th Quarter of Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals)

3 straight Finals appearances and 2 Champs is more impressive than FAILING MISERABLY AT DEFENDING A CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Spurs were too mentally weak to carry the burden of a bullseye on their backs, and never even followed a title with a Finals appearance. In fact, only once did the Spurs follow a title with even a WCF appearance (in 2008, where the Lakers beat that ass 4-1).

Even the fucking Houston Rockets won 2 in a row...how come your boys couldn't?

Spurs could never handle being #1, thus the hit-and-run championships. When the Lakers have won, they manned up and defended their crown. 87-88, 00-02, 09-10. The Lakers have handled being the champs, the Spurs haven't.

These are facts. Prove me wrong.

All that being said, I'm not an ignorant homer who can't face reality. They are probably done this year, but I guarantee you it will not be your sad-sack squad that takes us out. I'll bet any amount of money on that.

In 2003 Dirk was out for a pivotal part of the WCF...on 2007 Tim Donaghy ushered you through the only tough series/opponent you had to face. Oh, and if Garnett being out voids our 2099 championship (since they didnt even play the C's), then Dallas getting bunced by GSW voids your 2007 title. Sure you wanna go down this road, fuckface? Don't even try it, son. I'll destroy you.
