Have the bad feeling that Memphis tanks against the Clippers like they did last night in Portland ... Dallas will beat NO ... and everything is set for an easy walkthrough for the Lakers.

Screw it! I want Memphis in the first round because I want to see NO take down Dallas and drop them to the 4th seed. The worm will squirm in LA with OKC as the 3rd seed.

If Memphis wins, it's a win/win for the Spurs.
A Dallas win would put New Orleans at #8, while a New Orleans win would knock Dallas down to #4, assuming OKC wins vs. Milwaukee.
If Memphis does tank, we should root for New Orleans.

A conundrum:
Do we want to avoid Memphis in 1st round, and get Ok City in 2nd round?
Or do we want to play Memphis in 1st round and have Dallas in 2nd round?
The New Orleans- Dallas game will determine which road the Spurs take.
New Orleans wins, we get Memphis in 1st rd. Dallas in 2nd'
Dallas win, we get NO in 1st rd and Ok City in 2nd
All this assuming that Memphis does beat Clippers too, which they will.

Why's that?
Grizzlies Coach admitted he's not playing his starters against the Clippers. He wants to face S.A. so we'll be seeing them in the first round.

You know it's going to be the Blake Griffin show tonight for the final home game of the Clips season, and the Grizz will just sit back and watch.

I'd be happy with us playing the Grizz as long as LA drops to 3 tonight (Mavs win/Lakers loss) because they would have to play Portland and then Dallas without home court. If they get NOH and Dallas with home court it's going to suck hard. We'll be grinding through the gauntlet while they are breezing on through.
It doesn't matter who we face in the opening round. The Grizzlies are 8th for a reason. We aren't the Mavericks.

The more I think about it, i want the Grizzlies in the first round.
It's pretty clear that they're tanking for the 8th seed and want the Spurs. I hope Pop and the team uses this for motivation and destroys them in the first round.
I'm glad that they're feeling so confident about their team and think they can run with us after beating us without Tony and Tim in each of their wins.
But i'm not ready to crown them the 07 Warriors just yet with their 0-12 All Time Playoff Record. We aren't the Mavs.
These arrogant little pricks need to be reminded that there's a reason why the Spurs are the 1st seed and they're thrilled to be first round fodder.
Payback for the Gasol trade is going to be a bitch.

For what it's worth, Tim Legler said last night that Portland will be a very tough out in the first round, but he basically equated Memphis and New Orleans, saying neither of those teams is a threat.

I think that's about right.
Seriously now. We are talking about the Grizzlies without Rudy Gay, and the Hornets without David West. I'd prefer NO over Memphis so we have less size to deal with, but really...if either of these teams manages to surprise us in the first round, then there was no way in hell this team would've gone all the way anyways.

Memphis is good where Spurs are soft, inside.
And they are the most physical team in the West, at the moment.
Tough series.
Assuming Splitter will be DNP, of course, which is going to happen.

This.
Memphis is going to tank, because they already showed that in the Portland game. Right now I'm just looking for wins for Dallas and Sacramento.
The only plus to this is that I'm really disliking the Grizzlies now, so when the Spurs see them in the playoffs I'll be much more invested in that series. I hope the Spurs sweep that ass in magnificent blowout fashion.

Spurs will be fully rested and ready to defend HCA against whoever they play in the first round. They have the depth and experience on how to win. If the Spurs play hard and motivated knowing Memphis tanked just to play them. The Spurs could close it out in 4 or 5 games.
They need to play as a team though. Memphis is going to try and play physical but we have to play the same way and show them why they should be careful what they wish for..

Please everybody stop losing it. The only problem we have here is Splitter getting more playing time and Pop stone the nonsense of the rookie vs loyalty stuff.
Memphis?! LOL! They don't stand a chance against the 4x champion Spurs in a seven game series. I can only see them winning one game due to Spurs lameness and bad calls. That would probably be Game 1. aside from that can you say easy

As has been mentioned, I don't think anybody fears the Memphis Grizzlies. They're not going to beat the Spurs in the 1st round. However, there are fans, including myself, that would prefer this:
New Orleans/OKC
To this:
Memphis/OKC
Simply because Memphis is a more physical team than New Orleans. The Lakers would smash New Orleans even without Bynum (so they could potentially rest him for the entire series), and most likely wouldn't have too much trouble with Dallas in the second round either, especially if Bynum returns. That means a well-rested, healthy, confident Lakers team meeting the Spurs in the WCF after the Spurs just played multiple games against two very physical teams.
Memphis is not a concern. But what I wrote above is.

IMO the Mavs will try and tank, but NOH will out-tank them. Memphis will pull off a successful tank job, and the Spurs will end up with the worst case scenario: Grizz in the 1st round, and OKC in the second.

I'd rather play the Hornets w/o David West. The thing with New Orleans that killed us this year was David West's jump shot. Without that I think we could dominate them.

I'd still be all right with this if the Lakers lose to Sacramento, because at least then the Mavs would get the 2 seed and the Lakers would have to face Portland and then the Mavs without homecourt. But if the Hornets, Grizz and Kings all lose tonight I'm going to be absolutely inconsolable.

I hear ya, I do want Portland to rough up the Lakers, but I wouldn't count on Dallas. I think the Mavs will fold against LA with or without HCA. 5 games, maybe 6 if Dirk plays all-world ... Marion/Terry being the 2nd and 3rd best players = no chance vs a contending team.

so losing to the Lakers in 6 would be "folding"?
losing to the best team in the NBA when if they are healthy in 6 games is "folding"? careful.
Terry used to be the 3rd best player on the Mavs but not any more. He is down to 4th.. 5 players with PER's of over 15.
1. Dirk Nowitzki PER 24.46
2. Shawn Marion PER 17.18
3. Tyson Chander PER 18.50
4. Peja PER 15.26
5. Jet PER 15.96

I was being charitable with the possibility of 6 games ... would most likely end in 5.
The PER of Chandler and Peja don't matter much since their FG attempts are a small fraction of the amount Terry jacks it up. Terry attempts the second-highest number of shots behind Dirk, and that isn't changing soon.

Then these 2 outcomes are very probable:

OKC beats MIL
If this happens the standings will look like this
1. Spurs
2. Lakers
3. Thunder
4. Mavericks
5. Nuggets
6. Blazers
7. Hornets
8. Grizzlies
I'm perfectly fine that the Spurs will draw the Memphis in the first round as long as the Lakers face OKC in the second round. For me, Dallas is the perfect second-round match-up for the Spurs. They have no shot-creators on the perimeter, their centers put no offensive pressure on Duncan and there is practically no travel in between games.
The last thing we want is the Lakers to face NO/DAL. The Lakers will be sitting on their couches fat, dumb and happy watching the Spurs expend unnecessary amounts of energy beating the Thunder/Grizzlies.

Again (again!? yeah, again...) the Spurs can certainly get through Memphis and OKC/Denver, and they can potentially beat the Lakers in the WCF, and they can possibly beat the representative of the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. I truly believe that, and I think most Spurs fans do too. I'm not really worried at all about the Spurs beating the Grizzlies or the Thunder/Nuggets, and never said I was. BUT... it would be a lot more beneficial to the Spurs if the Lakers didn't get the combo platter of Hornets/Mavericks, especially if the Lakers have homecourt in each series. They'd lose maybe two games total, and that would make the Western Conference Finals a whole lot tougher for the Spurs.
In summary, I don't care who the Spurs play in the playoffs. I care who the Lakers play in the playoffs.

To me it's more a matter of how the teams match-up. I think the Thunder and Mavs would give the Spurs an equally difficult time, but I think the Lakers, specifically, would have more trouble with the Thunder than the Mavs so that's the way I'd like it to shake out.

Great post. Yes I think Grizz has the better frontcourt. But the spurs have a wayyy better backcout (TP, Manu, hill, Neal) and without Gay ...RJ's suckage will be less of an issue. Unless Mayo steps up big-time (he has had some success vs. Spurs) and Conley can stay with Parker I dont see how Grizz win more than 2 games ...but they dont get swept. they get their first playoff win.

I think everyone knew DAL would win, so the OKC game was meaningless. The real games everyone knew would matter are the LA & MEM games.
Lets see how this works. But the thought of MEM/OKC/LA is freaking nightmarish.
Spurs would've had to go through this tough road if they are to be in a position to win a championship so be it......

Like when Dirk went down in the 2003 wcf, or Joe Johnson in the 2005 WCF, or GSW taking out Dallas for you and Donaghy and Co. rigging your only tough series in 2007?
Yeah...Lakers are the only team to catch breaks. Fucking retard.

So now that the Hornets have lost, what is the situation if MEMPHIS loses too, as both teams will end up tied? Who gets the 8th spot?

Bill Land said that Memphis would get the 8th spot.
