Not afraid of the Grizzlies at all. Just hoped LA would have gotten them so LA didn't have to coast through the 1st round.

The Spurs are exactly 1 game better than the Grizzlies in the year 2011. I like the Spurs to win it since they're healthier, have more experience, more weapons, and have homecourt, but this looks like it's going to be a tough series.

If they had Rudy Gay, I honestly believe this would be an unbelievably tough series. However, the fact is they have one star on that team, Zach Randolph, and the rest of that team is made up of career underachievers who have had phenomenal success post-all star break. They're relying on Tony Allen to be their #2 option on offense, and no team is going to win a playoff series with that being the case. Defensively, they are very good, but we will be too with Duncan playing 35 minutes per game.

He had one really good game against us, when we played without Duncan. Marc Gasol has been a disappointment all year and I'm nearly as worried about Gasol giving them a 20-point night as I am that Randolph might pull an Amare and average 30/12.

If Gasol and Randolph are paired together on the court, this provides some offensive rebounding for the Grizz. If you watched the games against the Grizz, the Spurs gave up some timely offensive rebounds. Marc Gasol is one big body.

He had 4 total offensive rebounds in games against Spurs where Tim didn't play.
Uhhhh

Uhhhh
I'm talking about the effect of having Gasol out there, he boxes out pretty damn well. Factor in his wide frame and you have other Grizz players getting that offensive rebound or being close to getting one.
Gasol has the Darko Millic affect on the Grizzlies.

Dude, that's a bad thing.
Darko boxes out well and creates open space for Timberwolve players to get a rebound (case in point: Kevin Love).

Yup, Darko deserves all the credit for Kevin Love's season

Not all the credit, but some.
Love didn't get all those rebounds by being a freak all by his lonesome self.
Besides, the players on the Timberwolves aren't reliable shooters on a consistent basis. Factor that in and you get all these offensive rebound opportunities.

Agree to disagree.
Kevin Love is the best rebounder in basketball, and it has nothing to do with Darko Milicic. Boxing out is supposed to be done by everyone on the court, not just your bigs. Darko is a talented offensive rebounder in his own right, so I'd actually argue that hurts Kevin Love's rebounding numbers.
Let's get back to the Grizz series though.

Actually think they are better without Gay. Bit like Melo, take away a high volume low percentage shooter and they improve.
But Gay or not Jefferson will be the difference.

The Grizz this year are as overrated as the 2005 Nuggets. Those Nuggets were the best team in basketball (record-wise) after the ASG, and the Spurs took 4 straight from them after dropping game 1.

Again, no one is scared of the Grizz with regards to them beating the Spurs. There is nothing wrong with using logic and your eyes and hoping that LA plays tougher teams than SA. That doesn't mean SA is scared or that they can't get to the WCF, but there is absolutely no doubt that NO/DAL is way easier for LA both physically and talent wise than MEM/OKC.
This concept is not a difficult one to grasp.

I don't think you can compare them.
First Gay is neither a high volume (under 20 ppg) nor a low percentage (47%, 39% 3pt) shooter.
Second, if you look at on/off court statistics Memphis is better with Gay (net pts per 100 possesion +1) while Denver is better without Melo (-1.6).

We struggle against teams with two bigs. Lots of close games with the T'wolves this year because of the Love/Darko combo, and Gasol/Zach proved to be a tough matchup the last 4th Q we played against them. Having said that, this is the playoffs. IF we get a healthy Manu, our bench will show up at least at home, and we'll be alright.

Not really. I think Duncan's going to go off in this series. And I don't recall Gasol giving us many problems.
We haven't had Timmy playing 35 minutes a game yet. He is our anchor and things will be different with him in the game so long. Killer mode Duncan is coming. Pop hasn't saved his legs for nothing.:toast

I can't believe how many people can't understand that it has nothing to do with being afraid of the Grizzlies. It has to do with us going through two dogfights while LA gets to breeze through to the WCF. Fatigue does factor in believe it or not.
There's no such as an overrated team by this time of the season.

MEMPHIS! We're talking about MEMPHIS. Seriously, why would the Spurs have any problems getting past this team. Yeah they played us well the last two games of the years but those two games were without Parker. Without Parker they were able to press our ball handlers and give us some difficulty but with Parker now in we should get many easy attempts at the basket. Spurs in 5

I opened this thread expecting it to be about the Spurs being over-rated.
I see this as a dichotomas series - If Spurs play hard and smart it could be a sweep byt the Spurs or at worst 4-1.
However, if Spurs or Pop (just as likely these days) screw this up it could easily go to game 7 and hopefully Manu is available by then or otherwise we might some some genius coach throw some crazy rotation in there and screw it up again.

The Spurs would have to catch fire from the 3 to have any hope of 4-0 or 4-1 I think.

Spurs will beat the Grizz unless Ginobli is out for good. Then all bets are off.
But the Grizz will beat you up in the paint for 48 minutes. It won't be pretty. It will be a tough physical series.
The key is keeping Duncan from getting to banged up.

According to Accuscore, NOH have a better chance in the first round than Memphis.
Right.
Also, I would not be shocked if New Orleans takes L.A. to six games. They have Paul who will annihilate the Fisher matchup, and have a very good wing defender in Ariza. Emeka is also a very good defensive center.
And yes, I was referring to the Memphis Grizzlies as the most overrated team in history on Spurstalk.

Early on in this thread, my biggest concerns for the Spurs came to life during the series.
Failure to corral a defensive rebound because of the presence of Gasol and Randolph (not to mention, Bonner early on in the series) proved to be fatal for the Spurs.

Our best inside scorer was Tony, a 6-2 guard. Tim and Antonio just were not threats down low, and Blair, Bonner are not post up players, Splitter who I thought was good defensively also has no inside game, but he can learn some things in the offseason that may help him get better. This team was built for the regular season not the grind of a playoff series, still if Pop had worked Splitter as the first backup and not played Manu in that last game things might have been different.
