Black Gay Republicans
A group claiming to represent “Black Gay Republicans” endorsed President Bush yeterday. This brought sneers from all sides. James Taranto called them “The World’s Smallest Constituency.” Wonkette called them “all four of them. If that. . .”
But black gay Republicans are a formidable voting block. They put Bush in the White House!
Do the back-of-the-envelope math.
About 6 million people voted in Florida in 2000.
About 15 percent were African-American. 6 million * 0.15 = 900,000
About 10 percent of those black voters voted for President Bush. 900,000 * 0.10 = 90,000
About, say, 1 percent of those black Republican voters were gay (gay rights groups would use a higher number.) 90,000 * 0.01 = 900
Those 900 black gay Republican votes in Florida handed Bush the presidency. If it weren’t for black gay Republicans, Al Gore might be sane today.
Come to think of it, you'd probably have to factor in the proportion of gay voters who voted for Bush.
